Secretive New Mexico Data Center Plan Races Forward

At the very Southeastern tip of New Mexico bordering Texas and Mexico, a new artificial intelligence (AI) data center is gearing up to be a greenhouse gas and air pollution behemoth, an additional water user in a drought-afflicted region, and a sower of community discontent. Project Jupiter is one of five sites in the $500 billion Stargate Project, a national pipeline of massive AI systems linked with OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. “Health is my biggest concern. I’m worried about the air pollution, the ozone, and the buzzing noise,” local resident José Saldaña Jr., 45, told Truthout.

County commissioners in Georgia may pave the way for a $17 billion “hyperscale” data center on Tuesday by adopting new planning laws shaped by industry lobbyists. If passed, the latest draft of the laws will ease requirements for “Project Sail” — a proposed data center in a rural area of Coweta County, 40 miles southwest of Atlanta — relative to a more stringent version proposed last month. One of the biggest planned complexes of its kind, Project Sail is a joint venture between San Francisco-based Prologis (NYSE:PLD), the world’s largest industrial real estate company, and Georgia-based developer Atlas Development. A DeSmog review of public records suggests that industry lobbyists and company representatives prevailed upon Coweta County officials to dilute earlier versions of the proposed planning rules for data centers.

“In all my days here, this is the biggest black eye that Pittsylvania County has experienced,” says Amanda Sink Wydner, leader of the local opposition to plans for a massive new power plant and data center complex in Chatham, a small town in southern Virginia. On April 15, the county government will vote on whether to rezone hundreds acres of farmland to heavy industrial use, which would allow Balico LLC, a natural gas power developer, to proceed with the project. As planned, it would have the biggest power demand of any data center complex in the world, according to rankings from Data Center Magazine.
