Armed Right-Wing Protesters Are Extending The Economic Lockdown, Demonstrating White Privilege

As a white man watching the Michigan protests of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-at-home orders, all I could think was: Black people don’t get to do this Muslims don’t get to do this. Latinos don’t get to do this. People who don’t look like this don’t get to do this. They don’t get to swarm American capitol buildings in tactical gear with high-powered weapons, screaming in close proximity to police officers. They don’t get to dress up like Call of Duty cosplayers and attempt to physically intimidate politicians into bending to their wills. They don’t get to get to stop traffic in city streets decked out like they work at the Death Star and brazenly wield semi-automatic rifles. They don’t get to terrorize decent people and walk away. Only white people get to do this.

Pandemic May Turn People Back To Local Farms

At Waseda Farms in Baileys Harbor, store manager Sayard Geeve said, “The phone is ringing off the hook.” Flying Tractor Farm in Sturgeon Bay has been selling more of its meat products. Cold Climate Farms in Nasewaupee is getting calls from people asking whether its staff can ship food.  As the COVID-19 outbreak spreads throughout the country and here on the peninsula, local farms are affected differently from many other operations. Farmers with products available now are coming up with new ways to safely get their food to customers, and as they prepare now for the outdoor growing season, they’re dealing with uncertainty about what their customer base will be this summer.  Farms that produce year-round have seen an important, regular revenue source dwindle or disappear.

Wealthy Have Contempt For Those Without Wealth In Pandemics Throughout History And Today

Earlier this week, in his daily coronavirus briefing, President Trump shared that some of his business friends had been advising him to “don’t do anything, just ride it out and think of it as the flu.” America’s corporate chiefs — and their cheerleaders — haven’t just been whispering that advice into the president’s ear. They’ve been loudly proclaiming their distaste for the corona economic shutdown for some time now. In a “very few weeks,” former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein has advised, “let those with a lower risk to the disease return to work.” Former Wells Fargo CEO Dick Kovacevich has urged that the nation bring workers back to work and “see what happens.” “Some of them will get sick, some may even die, I don’t know,” Kovacevich continued. “Do you want to suffer more economically or take some risk that you’ll get flu-like symptoms and a flu-like experience?”
