Oligarchy Of Super PAC Megadonors Conquers US Politics

By Paul Blumenthal for Huffington Post - A new oligarchic era of American politics came into full view on Friday, as super PACs disclosed fundraising details showing billionaires bankrolling the 2016 presidential race to an unprecedented degree. The unlimited-money super PACs account for one-third of all federal election funds raised in the first half of 2015 -- up from 4 percent at this time in the last presidential election. Three-quarters of all super PAC money came from more than 500 wealthy donors, corporations and unions in contributions above $100,000. More than half the money in the presidential race so far -- to super PACs and to campaigns -- came from donors who have given at least $100,000. For the first time in more than a century, the majority of funding for a presidential election is coming in six-figure or larger checks from corporations and the wealthiest Americans. The presidential campaigns, limited to a maximum of $5,400 from a single donor, raised a combined $128 million. Super PACs supporting those candidates pulled in $260 million, with $208 million from those giving $100,000 or more.

Hundreds March Through Snow To End Political Corruption

Concord, NH - From January 11 to 21, hundreds of reform-minded citizens will brave the elements and walk across New Hampshire in a frigid “New Hampshire Rebellion" against big money in politics. Walkers from across New Hampshire and neighboring states will participate in four simultaneous NH Rebellion marches covering more than 300 miles from Portsmouth, Nashua, Keene, and Dixville Notch to Concord, NH. On January 21st, the fifth anniversary of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision, the marches will converge on the State House in Concord for a major rally declaring to the 2016 presidential candidates that New Hampshire voters are “Not for Sale.” “We are deeply concerned that elections are being bought and paid for by a handful of private interests looking out for themselves--not the American people,” said Daniel Weeks, Executive Director of Open Democracy in Concord.

3rd State Seeks Amendments Convention For Fair Elections

As first reported tonight on the The Young Turks here, Illinois recently joined Vermont and California in calling for an amendments convention to restore free and fair elections by reversing the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. On Wednesday, the Illinois State House of Representatives passed Senate Joint Resolution 42 (“SJR42”) in a vote of 72-40 with the required 3/5ths super-majority needed. “The purpose of this resolution, and similar resolutions around other states, is to convene a constitutional amendments convention,” stated bill co-sponsor Sen. Willie Delgado. “We need to amend this constitution to reverse the ruling on Citizens United. That ruling gave corporations “personhood” and led to the creation of Super-PACs, not only in Illinois, but throughout the nation. With SJR42, Illinois can lead the movement to save democracy in America.”
