FEMA Employees Who Signed Dissent Letter Put On Leave

Employees at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) were placed on leave on Tuesday after signing their names to a public letter criticizing the agency’s leadership, according to a group that helped facilitate the letter’s publication. More than 180 current and former FEMA staffers signed a public letter warning that the Trump administration is weakening the disaster response agency’s capacity and preventing it from carrying out its mission. Thirty-six staffers signed their names, the group told The Hill, while others signed anonymously. The letter was published online by the group Stand Up for Science but was addressed to the FEMA Review Council, which the Trump administration set up to explore ways to reform the agency. It also was sent to various congressional committees.

FEMA Reverses Plan To Require Israel Loyalty Oath For Disaster Aid

This week, the Trump administration reversed its decision to link disaster relief funds with loyalty pledges to Israel. Originally, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had published a statement declaring that states and cities had to certify that they wouldn’t boycott Israeli companies in order to qualify for disaster relief. Under DHS’s standard terms and conditions it reads, “Recipients must comply with all applicable Federal anti-discrimination laws material to the government’s payment decisions” and adds: Discriminatory prohibited boycott means refusing to deal, cutting commercial relations, or otherwise limiting commercial relations specifically with Israeli companies or with companies doing business in or with Israel or authorized by, licensed by, or organized under the laws of Israel to do business. The story quickly made the rounds on social media, prompting it to remove the statement from its website.

Hurricane Helene Survivor Reacts To Trump Administration Aid Response

On April 25, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Trump administration had approved a USD 1.4 billion grant for post-Hurricane Helene rebuilding efforts. Last year, hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated some of the most impoverished regions of the US, leaving behind billions of dollars in damages and resulting in hundreds of deaths. “This is great news for western North Carolina,” said Governor Josh Stein in a statement. “I thank the Trump Administration for moving quickly to approve this plan so we can get busy rebuilding people’s homes.”

Only one week after Hurricane Helene left a trail of destruction in the Southeastern region of the United States, which the US government was wholly unprepared and unwilling to contend with, Hurricane Milton is expected to launch a new path of devastation across the state of Florida, primarily. As of Thursday morning, over three million Florida residents are without power, with some counties having as many as 80% of residents lacking in electricity. At least nine are dead following the storm as crews rescue stranded residents.
