Hundreds Injured As Palestinians Demonstrate Against ‘Flag March’

Israel’s flag march, an annual display of right-wing Israeli nationalism and anti-Palestinian racism, took place on Sunday afternoon, stoking tensions in Jerusalem and across the occupied Palestinian territory. Israeli media reported that Sunday’s flag march was the largest in years, with an estimated 70,000 Israelis participating in the parade. Leading up to the march, Palestinian factions in Gaza denounced the parade, threatening retaliation against Israel. “The flag march plan is an explosive barrel and will blow the region up,” the factions said in a joint statement in a press conference held in Gaza City on Thursday. The factions called on Palestinians to defend Jerusalem, and encouraged people to establish their presence in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and across the city.

Israeli Protesters Rally Against US Embassy Move To Jerusalem

At least a hundred Israelis marched through downtown Jerusalem Saturday night to protest what they described as politically volatile moves next week that would increase tensions with Palestinians. The demonstration organized by various left-wing groups specifically denounced the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem, as well as the annual Jerusalem Day celebrations which includes a politically charged march through the Old City’s Muslim Quarter. The protesters called to “stop escalating tensions, spreading hatred, and provocations that undermine a chance for peace.” “We’re fed up with cynical politicians who are trying to gain political capital at our expense. Whoever really loves Jerusalem, fights for its education and infrastructure, not transfer the US embassy here, which will only lead to violence,” one of the protest organizers, Sof Pitishi, said in a statement.

Jerusalem: The Latest Chapter In A Century Of Colonialism

One hundred years ago, on 11 December 1917, the British army occupied Jerusalem. As General Allenby’s troops marched through Bab al-Khalil, launching a century of settler colonialism across Palestine, prime minister David Lloyd George heralded the city’s capture as “a Christmas present for the British people”. In a few months’ time, we mark another such anniversary: 70 years since the Palestinian Nakba of 1948, the catastrophic destruction of the Palestinian polity; the violent dispossession of most of its people with their forced conversion into disenfranchised refugees; the colonial occupation, annexation and control of their land; and the imposition of martial law over those who managed to remain.

Jerusalem Can Never Be Taken Off The Table

In a recent interview with Helena Cobban hosted by the Institute for Palestine Studies, Dr. Rashid Khalidi, the founder of the Journal of Palestine Studies, states that the recent declaration by the United States regarding Jerusalem has brought the Jerusalem issue again to the table.  Jerusalem is again gaining more attention internationally and activists in the US and Europe are protesting continuously the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem in recognition of the city as the capital of Israel.  The actions of the of US is also unmasking the intimate relationship with Israel and the undemocratic Arab countries in the Middle East.
