Professors, Adjuncts Unite, Win Raises, Job Security In First Contract

Teachers at the University of Oregon approved by 99 percent a first contract yesterday, the fruits of solidarity between tenure-track and contingent faculty that began in 2007. The deal covers more than 1,800 professors, instructors, researchers, and librarians. “We’re excited here,” cheered political science associate professor Jane Cramer. United Academics (UA), which is affiliated with both the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), won a representation election in April 2012. A strong contract campaign helped win the agreement.

Kaplan Stalls To Avoid Union Contract

Almost 100 ESL teachers at Kaplan teaching centers in the city voted in June of 2012 to join the Newspaper Guild by a two-thirds majority. But after contract negotiations began in earnest with Kaplan last November, the teachers are still without a contract because they say Kaplan is stalling. Watch Video It was the first time teachers at Kaplan International, a private language school that teaches English language courses to students from around the world, voted to join a union. Emily Lessem has been an ESL teacher with Kaplan for five years; she and her colleagues celebrated after they won union recognition. But Kaplan’s stalling tactics to avoid signing a union contract is taking a toll on the teachers.

At AFL-CIO Convention, Leaders Ask: What Direction for Labor?

Using their official positions to maintain class peace, they keep the political machine running smoothly. However, as wealth has become more concentrated in fewer hands and corporations have consolidated their control over both major parties, the old arrangement is no longer necessary. From the point of view of the 1%, the structure of organized Labor is a relic from the days when there were militant mass movements that challenged their control and profit making. Today, the elites have no more use for Labor’s political support than a once-broken, now-healed arm has for a sling. Ignored and rebuffed by the corporate parties, Labor's top leaders today have compromised the interests of their membership and all workers in the hope of appearing to be reasonable statesmen and not losing their minority seats at the political table. Labor’s Love Lost Over Obamacare?

The letter urges AFL President Rich Trumka to "push the envelope further" in "the cause of health care justice" by using the shortcomings of Obamacare to build broader support for tax-supported universal coverage that "would take healthcare off the bargaining table." Instead, there are strong indications that top AFL-CIO officials want to tamp down any public criticism of ACA and the president (even though they are hailing their 2013 convention as "a time for decisive action to answer the challenges facing working people.") Preventing the labor backlash against Obamacare from actually forcing a real discussion on the convention floor will take some doing. In a resolution passed earlier this month, even the Nevada AFL-CIO has joined the public chorus of Obamacare critics, noting that "our health plans only get worse" while the White House fails to respond to serious union concerns.

Letter To AFL-CIO To Promote Discussion On Independent Labor Movement

"Whereas, labor has been diverted from the struggle for an independent labor movement by the countless calls for 'shared sacrifice' promoted by the employers and politicians in their service. Having accepted the framework of 'shared sacrifice' has led labor to water down our demands and make compromises that have impeded us from mounting a powerful independent fightback movement, in alliance with our community partners, capable of rolling back the anti-worker assault and wresting concessions from the corporate class. ... "Therefore be it resolved that, the AFL-CIO convention affirms the urgent need to build an independent labor movement, rejecting any and all calls for 'shared sacrifice' and drawing a hard, unmovable, line in the sand when it comes to promoting the demands and interests of our members and the working class majority."

American Unions’ Troubles Fueling Resurgence In Labor Activism?

At the same time, A recent Pew Research Center study found that labor was regaining some of its luster in the eyes of the American people—more than half supported unions this summer, a 25 percent increase over two years earlier—and that union supporters and members have shifted from predominately white male to a more diverse workforce in which women were heavily represented, MSNBC reported. The predominance of women and people of color in the labor movement is a relatively recent phenomenon. [City University of New York sociologist Penny] Lewis traced it back to the Vietnam War era, when unions “started organizing within health care and you started to have organizing within the public sector.” At the same time, traditionally unionized sectors of the workforce, such as manufacturing, came under attack from employers looking to cut slash labor costs.

Longshoreman’s Union Breaks With AFL-CIO

The ILWU, known for its militant traditions and progressive politics, has been drawn into turf wars with other unions in recent years—particularly in the grain export terminals of the Pacific Northwest, where longshore workers have been locked in a high-stakes battle over master contract standards since 2011. In an August 29 letter to AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, ILWU President Robert McEllrath cited these ongoing juristictional battles as part of the union’s decision to disaffiliate. The skirmishes hit close to home: McEllrath comes out of Vancouver, Washington’s Local 4, where members of rival unions are crossing ILWU picket lines, and debate over the disputes was squelched at this summer’s state labor convention. The letter also cited the federation’s compromised positions on health care and immigration reform. Invoking the union’s radical and independent history, McEllrath noted the ILWU did not join the AFL-CIO until 1988—after being kicked out of the CIO during the McCarthy era for being “too red.”
