Occupy National Gathering Begins

Included is a photo essay of the Occupy Wall Street (Inter) National Gathering: decolonize the 99%. It’s the second annual gathering of the Occupy movement and allies—the first was in Philadelphia June 30 to July 5, 2012. We promise a full-bodied 5-day event with emphasis on the colonization of this country by corporations—an important public event with creative activism, parades, and, most importantly, the People being heard. NatGat2 is a place for the movement of affinity to regroup, debrief, and regain strength after the brutal crack-downs on the encampments in 2011 and targeted legislative repression and unprecedented spying by NSA on US persons. The Nat Gat goes from August 21 to 25, 2013.

Why Is the 1% So Much Richer Than Everyone Else?

It’s been nearly two years since Occupy Wall Street took over Zuccotti Park, and the academic establishment is still chewing through questions it raised about how to understand the 1 percent in America. In particular, how did they get so darn rich? And what would happen if we took some of their money away? That’s the focus of this month’s Journal of Economic Perspectives, which features several papers arguing a few sides of the debate, offering some fascinating windows into the nature of extreme wealth. Increasing income inequality is not disputed. The question of why the divide is widening, though, splits economists into two broad camps. One believes that people at the top have used their positions of influence to lock in excessive earnings. The other thinks that people with scarce and unique talents have simply been able to command a premium in markets that have gotten bigger over time.

Occupy Madison Builds ‘Tiny Houses’ For The Homeless

The activists behind Occupy Madison have come up with a tiny solution to a big problem: building mini-homes for the homeless community as part of an ongoing political campaign against homelessness in Wisconsin's capital city[...]The homes are around 98 square feet and will be equipped with a microwave, a small refrigerator, and heating, according to the organizers. The units are built on wheels and will have to be moved every 48 hours to circumvent the city’s parking requirements, which prohibit trailers from staying outdoors on the same location for more than two days."

Occupy (Inter) National Gathering Endorsed By 60 Occupy Groups

In a broad show of support, over sixty Occupy groups have now endorsed the second Occupy National Gathering, known as Occupy Wall Street (Inter) National Gathering: Decolonize the 99%, taking place Wednesday August 21 through Sunday August 25, 2013, in Kalamazoo, MI.

It’s Time to Roll Up Our Sleeves and Build

It only takes a moment’s reflection to realize that true power in the 21st century derives from access to, and control of, wealth and resources. Our republican democracy, so carefully constructed by Madison and others to avert exactly the type of revolutionary uprising that would wrest power from the monied elites, is quite literally Occupy-resistant. (Don’t believe me? Read Federalist Papers #10 and learn about measures to control the “democracy excess” that led to rebellions like Shay’s) We can democratize ownership of resources and access to decision-making in this country, but it won’t be through the legislative process alone. We have to literally build it.

Oregon Jury Denies Occupy Protesters’ Police Lawsuit

A seven-person jury has found the city of Portland and two of its police officers not liable for an Occupy Portland protester's injuries. The Oregon jury took four hours to return a verdict saying that the officers did not use excessive force when one of them struck protester Liz Nichols in the throat with a baton and the other one sprayed her open mouth with pepper spray. The officers' defense team said in closing arguments that the police were doing their job in a difficult situation during the November 2011 protests. Despite the loss, Nichols' attorneys say they're happy that the issue has been aired publicly and that attention has been trained on the police reaction to demonstrations.

Mayoral Candidates Stake Out Own Ground Over Occupy Crackdown

Nearly two years after Occupy Wall Street protesters took over a park in Lower Manhattan—and then were removed forcibly by police—New York City mayoral candidates have strong opinions about how Mayor Michael Bloomberg responded, and varied ideas about how they would handle similar protests. To Republicans such as Mr. Lhota and John Catsimatidis, Mr. Bloomberg—who isn't affiliated with either party—handled the protests well. Mr. Lhota said he may even act more quickly than Mr. Bloomberg did, "now that we know what can be done."

Occupy’s Puppets: Tweaking the Noses of the Trans-Pacific Partnership

This coming September 17 in NYC’s famous Times Square on the second birthday of Occupy Wall Street, Occupier/Activist performers will take on the infamous TPP in a Star Wars-themed protest called Money Warz. The Trans-Pacific Partnership will be portrayed as the “TPP Death Star” – a 15-foot-tall replica of a toilet paper roll (get it – TPP?). The supporting cast for this “Money Warz” spectacle will feature over 200 performers, videographers, livestreamers and citizen media folk. They will appear at public-shaming rallies to be held at select corporate headquarters, banks congressional offices, and on Wall Street itself. That is, if they can get past the barricades manned by NYC’s Finest who serve to separate the 1% from the 99%.

Oakland Approves $1.17M Settlement for Occupy Protesters

The Oakland City Council has given preliminary approval to a proposed $1.17 million settlement with 12 people who were injured during Occupy Oakland protests in 2011, according to the plaintiffs' lawyers and the city attorney's office. City attorney spokesman Alex Katz said Chief Assistant City Attorney Doryanna Moreno announced during an open session of the council Tuesday night that the council preliminarily approved the agreement during a closed meeting on June 21. The council still had to vote to give final approval as of Wednesday, and the vote was scheduled for a meeting on July 16, Katz said.
