Rabbi, Prominent Jews Opposed To Attack On Syria

“It is time for American Jews to take a stand against AIPAC, to put America first, to put peace first. “This is the time of the Jewish High Holy Days– Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, when many Jews go to synagogue, for some, the only time of year they go. “They are getting messages from their rabbis. Some are being asked to tell their congressmen to support Obama’s call for support for an attack on Syria.Others are being told the exact opposite, that an attack on Syria is a bad idea. “I’ll wrap up this piece with these words. I am a Jew and I totally oppose the attack on Syria. I also totally oppose AIPAC. I support Israel’s right to exist, but oppose many of its policies, just as I have opposed policies of the recent presidents of the United States.

First Vote In Senate On Syria Will Be Wednesday

As we have seen today, with the move by Russia and Syria to put Syria's chemical weapons under international control, the situation regarding Syria can change rapidly. The schedule below put forward by CNN is one that is likely to be modified as the week goes forward. Since they put out this schedule Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid confirmed that Wednesday the Senate will take a procedural vote regarding Syria. This will be the first test in either House of Congress on the authorization for the use of military force in Syria. The vote is scheduled to come the day after Obama's address to the nation and after a private briefing by the administration to senators. It should be a strong point for Obama as the administration attempts to change the momentum in Congress and among the people which is opposed to a military attack on Syria.

Applying Principles Of Conflict Resolution To Syria

The issues currently dominating discussion in Congress, the news media, and the streets leave us caught between two apparent alternatives: punish the Assad regime for using chemical weapons or “do nothing.” But there is another alternative: convene a peace conference, as the Russians have suggested, make sure that all the conflicting parties participate, and conduct the conference according to conflict resolution principles, and not as a typical Versailles-style exercise in hard bargaining and power politics. Peace is the goal in Syria, which, heaven knows, deserves security, prosperity, and freedom after losing more than 100,000 of its people in an atrocious civil conflict. Peace is not an impossible dream, if all parties concerned determine that serious peace talks must be attempted before any new attacks on the Syrian regime are launched. We can still remedy the tragic flaw in American foreign policy by insisting that peace is the means as well as the end, and that no military action can ever be considered a last resort without going all out for conflict resolution.

Americans Increasing Opposition To War

More than two-thirds of people in the United States want Congress to reject military action against Syria, according to a new poll. While CNN/ORC International found that 80 percent of people believe Syrian President Bashar Assad gassed his own people, about 70 percent say a strike would not achieve U.S. goals or serve the national interest. And even if Congress were to give President Obama the green light to launch an attack, 55 percent of Americans would still oppose it. “Congressional approval would help Obama a little, but a majority would still oppose airstrikes against military targets in Syria,” said Keating Holland, CNN’s polling director. Most of the 1,022 Americans surveyed said their votes in future elections would not be influenced by their congressional representative’s stance on the resolution. But by a 3-1 margin, people who said it would influence their votes said they’d be more likely to vote against lawmakers who support strikes.

Russia Offers Way Out Of Crisis; Syria Accepts

Syria welcomes a Russian proposal to place the nation's chemical weapons under international control, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said on Monday after talks in Moscow, praising the Kremlin for seeking to "prevent American aggression". Moualem, who spoke to reporters through an interpreter after Russia expressed hope the proposal could avert military strikes against Syria, stopped short of saying explicitly that President Bashar al-Assad's government accepted it.

German Intelligence: Assad Did Not Order Chemical Weapons Attack

President Bashar al-Assad did not personally order last month's chemical weapons attack near Damascus that has triggered calls for US military intervention, and blocked numerous requests from his military commanders to use chemical weapons against regime opponents in recent months, a German newspaper has reported , citing unidentified, high-level national security sources. The intelligence findings were based on phone calls intercepted by a German surveillance ship operated by the BND, the German intelligence service, and deployed off the Syrian coast, Bild am Sonntag said. The intercepted communications suggested Assad, who is accused of war crimes by the west, including foreign secretary William Hague, was not himself involved in last month's attack or in other instances when government forces have allegedly used chemical weapons.

War Powers Act Author: Obama No Authority To Attack Syria

Despite his own recent statements to the contrary, President Barack Obama has no legal authority to assault the government of Syria even as “a warning shot.” Neither the United States Constitution, nor the War Powers Act of 1973 gives him such authority in the absence of an emergency that allows Congress no time to react. Obama cannot cite the present situation as such an emergency, given his public statement that members of Congress need not act until the completion of their scheduled vacation. He has said that his proposal is “not time sensitive.” If Congress fails to approve a resolution approving acts of war against Syria, he cannot order any military assault into Syria.

Nader Open Letter to Obama ‘No War On Syria’

This time, however, you may have pushed for too many acts of War. Public opinion and sizable numbers of members of both parties in Congress are opposed. These lawmakers oppose bombing Syria in spite of your corralling the cowardly leaders of both parties in the Congress. Your argument for shelling Syria is to maintain “international credibility” in drawing that “red line” regardless, it seems, of the loss of innocent Syrian civilian life, causalities to our foreign service and armed forces in that wider region, and retaliation against the fearful Christian population in Syria (one in seven Syrians are Christian). But the more fundamental credibilities are to our Constitution, to the neglected necessities of the American people, and to the red line of observing international law and the UN Charter (which prohibit unilateral bombing in this situation).

Support For War Continues To Erode

Mike Rogers, Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and a supporter of the strikes, said President Barack Obama had made "a hash" of his argument for military action to punish Assad. "It's very clear he's lost support in the last week ... The president hasn't made the case," Rogers said on CBS's "Face the Nation." Obama's plan faces significant resistance from Republicans and his fellow Democrats in Congress, with many lawmakers worried military strikes in Syria could lead to a prolonged U.S. commitment there and spark broader conflicts in the region. "I am asking where is the national security issue? Make no mistake about it, the minute that one of those cruise missiles lands in there, we are in the Syrian war," Democrat Loretta Sanchez of California said on NBC's "Meet the Press" program.

Doubts Linger Over Syria Gas Attack Responsibility

The U.S. government insists it has the intelligence to prove it, but the public has yet to see a single piece of concrete evidence produced by U.S. intelligence - no satellite imagery, no transcripts of Syrian military communications - connecting the government of President Bashar Assad to the alleged chemical weapons attack last month that killed hundreds of people. What's missing from the public record is direct proof, rather than circumstantial evidence, tying this to the regime. Syrian government officials and Assad accused foreign fighters of carrying out the attacks with the help of countries like Saudi Arabia and Turkey in the hopes of prompting an international military intervention. Syria says some of its own soldiers were badly contaminated in Jobar, on the edge of Damascus, as they went into tunnels cleared by the rebels. U.N. experts, who had been collecting tissue and other samples from victims in Ghouta, also visited the Mazzeh military hospital in Damascus, taking samples from injured soldier there.

White House Relying On “Common Sense” Not “Irrefutable” Evidence

The Obama administration is now claiming that it does not have irrefutable evidence that Assad used chemical weapons, rather it is relying on "commonsense."  For many the commonsense test is actually why the Obama administration is flunking.  Commonsense tells us Assad, who was winning against the rebels, would not risk using chemical weapons and crossing Obama's much publicized "red-line."  Why would Assad give the world's only super power an excuse to enter the war?  And, why would he do it when UN inspectors are in Syria already investigating previous allegations?  Commonsense is actually on the side of Assad, not on the side of Obama.

Toll Free: Call The Capitol To Say No To Syrian War

Friends Committee on National Legislation has a toll free phone number to the Capitol switchboard for calls against the war in Syria, which we’ll keep open through the votes. It’s: 1-855-68 NO WAR or 1-855-686-6927. The advantage of this number is that we can volume of calls, by day & time (and city—though not by district). We also have a shareable image on the right for calls, on our FB page, and also have instructions about posting the image on other websites.

“We Oppose Both A U.S. – Led Attack On Syria And The Brutal Regime Of Bashar al–Assad. We Support A Democratic Syrian Revolution!”

"Right now, many members of Congress have stated that they will support the President, or that they are "on the fence," despite the fact that their constituents overwhelmingly oppose an attack on Syria. Our leaders will respond, if at all, only to active protest. At the same time, we believe it is absolutely crucial for the antiwar movement to distinguish itself from those who make excuses for or even cheer on the murderous Assad regime. The only principled and effective basis for opposition to U.S. imperialism is consistent support for democracy and opposition to authoritarianism, torture and repression, whatever the source. We urge those who participate in demonstrations to carry signs that denounce both a U.S.–led attack against Syria and the bloody Assad regime. Because of Iraq and Afghanistan, because of the heroic revelations of Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden, there is an all–pervading and profoundly healthy skepticism toward U.S. foreign policy among Americans and throughout the world. Public opinion, here and abroad, is on our side. We must act now to stop Obama's catastrophic assault on Syria."

Middle Eastern Left Groups Issue United Call “Against Intervention And For The Revolution” In Syria

"A LARGE block of hostile forces from around the world is conspiring against the Syrian people's revolution, which erupted in tandem with the uprisings spreading through a large section of the Arab region and the Maghreb for the past three years. The people's uprisings aimed to put an end to a history of brutality, injustice and exploitation, and attain the rights to freedom, dignity and social justice. However, this not only provoked local brutal dictatorships, but also most of the imperialist forces seeking to perpetuate the theft of the wealth of our people, in addition to the various reactionary classes and forces throughout those areas and in surrounding countries"

Shady PR Operatives, Pro-Israel Ties, Anti-Castro Money: Inside The Syrian Opposition’s DC Spin Machine

"With Congress set to vote on a resolution authorizing the US to strike Syria, SETF [Syrian Emergency Task Force] has issued an action alert on its website urging supporters to light up congressional phone lines urging “yes” votes. In a call with the White House, SETF urged much broader action in Syria than the “limited strikes” Obama has asked Congress to authorize. The group is dedicated to regime change, and is pressing for any and all military measures to accomplish the mission — even, apparently, boots on the ground."
