Campaign Finance

Boycott Corporatocracy! Boycott Corrupt Elections!

The recent Supreme Court ruling removing limits to campaign financing should be the final straw on the camel's back of the American people. Democracy in our country is a standing joke . . . and the trend of politics-for-sale is no longer funny. Wealthy elites and mega-corporations have created a modern day Court of Versailles in which the super-wealthy profit from the abject poverty of the rest of us. The Marie Antoinette's of our day cut food stamps for impoverished children while crying, "Let them work for their cake!" Washington D.C. is an upper-class court of avaricious elites manipulating the population into wage-slavery and debt servitude. The 2016 Presidential election will be a charade of Money vs. Money as the two leading oligarchical families vie to return to the White House. Regardless of who wins, the outcome is the same: the rich will get richer; the poor will get poorer. The elite will win; the people will lose.

Breaking: ‘Rule Of Money’ Gets Stronger; Take Action Today

The 'rule of money' got much stronger today with the 5-4 ruling by the US Supreme court in McCutcheon v. FEC. The Supreme Court overturned another foundational building block of the meager campaign finance rules that exist. The Court struck down critical limits on the amount a wealthy individual can give to candidates, parties, and committees. Prior to McCutcheon v. FEC, a wealthy donor was limited to a cap of $123,200. Now, an individual donor can give more than $3.5 million. Rapid reponse actions were planned in advance by Money Out/Voters In. They wrote before today's decision: Never before has our political campaign system been as corrupted as now with unlimited corporate spending and dark money. Our democracy is eroding before us. But all over the country people are also fighting back and demanding change. 16 states called for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and related cases and the movement is growing. If you want to take part in rapid-response rallies, to stand up to take democracy and to end the rule of money. Find a rally near you here.

In Rare Protest US Supreme Court Is Disrupted

A rare disturbance broke out Wednesday during oral arguments at the Supreme Court when a lone protester at the back of the ornate room rose and loudly urged the court to overturn its 2010 ruling in Citizens United, which opened the door to unlimited corporate campaign contributions in elections. “I arise on behalf of the vast majority of the people of the United States who believe that money is not speech,” the protester said, “corporations are not people and that our democracy should not be for sale to the highest bidder.” The protester, identified by a court spokeswoman as Noah Newkirk, of Los Angeles, said the court should “overturn Citizens United” On his Facebook page Noah 'Kai' Newkirk wrote: "Just released from jail after disrupting a Supreme Court session yesterday to raise up the voice of the vast majority of Americans who believe democracy should be about everybody's votes not billionaire's dollars."

Lawsuit Seeks To Shed Light On Rove’s ‘Dark Money’ Donors

After a recent three-to-three decision by a partisan-deadlocked Federal Elections Commission (FEC), Karl Rove may have thought he was off the hook for federal campaign finance violations by his Crossroads GPS organization. Two non-profit, good government groups, however, feel differently. Last Friday, they filed a federal lawsuit [PDF] against the FEC in hopes of forcing the agency to reverse its ruling, revisit the complaint against his group's 2010 electioneering, and to enforce federal campaign finance rules as specified by law. Late last Friday, Attorneys from the non-partisan Campaign Legal Center and thePublic Citizen Litigation Group filed a civil complaint against the FEC in U.S. District Court in Washington D.C.
