Dependence on foreign aid, political instability, chronic poverty, and the effects of climate change are among the obstacles preventing Burkina Faso from achieving its longed-for food sovereignty. Currently, about 80% of the population of the Sahelian nation is involved in agricultural activity, which accounts for a third of the GDP. Even so, the country still imports more than 200,000 tons of rice per year. In response to this challenge, President Ibrahim Traoré’s government launched the so-called Agricultural Offensive in 2023, which has been revolutionizing the rural environment and serving as a model for the continent.

Brazil’s Landless Rural Workers’ Movement (MST) launched the third edition of Nature Day this Monday, an initiative that is part of its national plan “Plant Trees, Produce Healthy Food.” The goal is not only reforestation but also strengthening popular agrarian reform as an alternative to the current environmental crisis. This was stated by Camilo Augusto, project coordinator, in an interview with local media. Since 2021, the MST has promoted this event across Brazil, carrying out activities that include planting, seed distribution and mobilizing around environmental preservation.

In the early hours of Saturday, May 31, the Homeless Workers’ Movement (MTST) strengthened an occupation in an area of Rio de Janeiro’s port region that already brought together around 200 families. According to the Movement, the area belongs to Jornal do Brasil and Docas S.A. and had been abandoned for more than two decades. Members of the MTST have been cleaning up the land, preparing the area to organize housing and a community kitchen. “This is an occupation that has been going on for a few days and today we are in the process of consolidating it, guaranteeing more structure for the families,” explains Gabriel Siqueira, national coordinator for the MTST.

By EFE in Fox News Latino - Some 1,000 members of Brazil's MST Landless Movement on Monday occupied the finance ministry to protest the austerity policies of President Dilma Rousseff. The MST activists arrived during the early morning, occupied the first floor of the building and blocked access to ministry officials, police said. In a communique, the MST said that the protest was called to protest the combination of spending cuts and tax hikes that the Rousseff government decided to implement to shore up public finances and straighten out the economy, expected to shrink at least 1.5 percent this year. Alexandre Conceição, a member of the national MST coordinating body, told reporters that the cuts in public spending announced by the government has reduced by almost 50 percent the funds available this year for agrarian reform.
