President Obama Can Help Save Saudi Youth Facing Beheading

By Medea Benjamin for CODEPINK - One concrete outcome that President Obama could pursue on his visit to Saudi Arabia is saving the lives of three Shia youth sentenced to be executed, most likely by beheading, for participating in nonviolent protests. Sparing their lives could also help ease the Shia/Sunni tensions that have engulfed the region. Ali al-Nimr, Dawood al-Marhoon, and Abdullah al-Zaher are members of the minority Shia community that has, for decades, been demanding equality and full civil rights.

Will Obama Release The Secret 28 Pages About 9/11

By Ben Mathis-Lilley for Slate - Sunday night, 60 Minutes ran a segment about ongoing efforts to convince the Obama administration to declassify 28 infamous pages in an otherwise public 2002 congressional report which reportedly document allegations that Saudi Arabian nationals in the U.S. and elsewhere materially supported some of the 9/11 hijackers. The “28 pages” have been controversial since the report in which they were supposed to appear was issued and seem likely to stay in the news this year as the 15thanniversary of the 9/11 attacks coincides with the end of Obama's term in office.

Clinton Should Ask Obama To Withdraw The TPP

By Dave Johnson for Campaign For America's Future - Hillary Clinton has a credibility problem when it comes to our country’s trade policies and the resulting enormous, humongous trade deficits that measure job loss – especially with regard to the Trans-Pacific Partnership. But Clinton has a chance to shore up her credibility with Democratic voters on this issue. It comes as President Obama, Wall Street and the multinational corporations are preparing to grease the skids for pushing the TPP through Congress in the post-election “lame duck” session.

Obama’s Transparency, Clinton’s Emails, And CIA Going Hollywood

By Dennis Trainor, Jr. for The Acronym Jorunal - The Obama administration has long called itself the most transparent administration in history. But newly released Department of Justice (DOJ) documents show that the White House has actually worked aggressively behind the scenes to scuttle congressional reforms designed to give the public better access to information possessed by the federal government.

Obama Supreme Court Nomination: A Missed Opportunity

By Bill Mosley for President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit and a former federal prosecutor, to the Supreme Court seat vacated by the death of Antonin Scalia was, as the pundits have noted, intended to present the Senate with a non-threatening, noncontroversial candidate to whom it would be hard to object. In the thinking of the president and his advisors, an anodyne figure such as Garland, someone without ideological baggage or a crusader image, would deprive Senate Republicans...

Obama Admin About To Kneecap Own Efforts To Reform Coal Leasing

By David Roberts for Vox - Over the past year or so, the Obama administration has shown increasing sympathy toward the new climate activism mantra: "Keep it in the ground." In November, Barack Obama rejected the Keystone XL pipeline, saying, "If we’re going to prevent large parts of this Earth from becoming not only inhospitable but uninhabitable in our lifetimes, we’re going to have to keep some fossil fuels in the ground."

Mothers Of Plaza De Mayo Reject Obama’s Visit To Argentina

By Staff of Tele Sur - The head of Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, Hebe de Bonafini, described the visit of President Obama to Argentina as "a mockery of the historical memory of the Argentine people." The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo Association called misplaced the visit of US President, Barack Obama, to Argentina during the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the 1976 coup. "I started thinking what country represents Obama and I immediately jumped to mind the Condor Plan...

Protesters Disown Obama’s Visit To Argentina

By Staff of La Tercera - Protesters marched today against the visit of President Barack Obama to Argentina and burned American flags near the US Embassy in Buenos Aires and place of accommodation of the president and his family. Between 1,500 and 2,000 demonstrators staged a protest outside the convention center La Rural in Palermo, where one organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Argentina business meeting was held.

With Obama In Cuba, Pro-Torture Pundits Suddenly Concerned

By Adam Johnson for FAIR - US President Barack Obama landed in Havana Sunday to great fanfare, both in Cuba and stateside. His visit marks a significant shift of the United States’ approach towards the socialist state, and the possibility of cooperation after decades of hostility. US media generally struck a hopeful tone, with a surprisingly nuanced mix of positive and critical stories about Cuba. Some Cold War hold-outs in the media just weren’t having it, though, taking the occasion to feign outrage that Obama could visit a country with such a terrible human rights record.

Che Guevara’s Son On Obama In Cuba:

By Jonathan Watts for The Guardian - With wary optimism, the son of Ernesto “Che” Guevara is coming to grips with the visit to Havana this Sunday of a contemporary who just happens to be the leader of the world’s capitalist powerhouse. Camilo Guevara – the eldest son of one of the Cuban revolution’s most famous figures – was born within a year of Barack Obama in the early 1960s, when Cuba and the US were starting one of the cold war’s most dangerous and enduring conflicts.

Call For Crowd To Smoke Marijuana Outside White House

By Phillip Smith for AlterNet - Inspired by a warning from comedian Bill Maher that progress on marijuana reform could be rolled back after President Obama leaves office, pot advocates in the nation's capital have announced a bold protest next month to press Obama to move on marijuana while he still can. While Obama has largely not interfered with marijuana legalization in states that have approved it, he has also signaled that he is not going to be proactive on the issue.

Why I Refused To Meet With President Obama

By Aislinn Pulley for Truthout - On February 18, civil rights activists and leaders from around the country were invited to the White House for what the Obama administration has called a "first-of-its-kind" intergenerational meeting to discuss "a range of issues, including the administration's efforts on criminal justice reform" and "building trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve." The event's guest list includes high-profile civil rights leaders like Al Sharpton, student organizer DeShaunya Ware and others.

Obama’s Plan To Close Guantanamo Too Little, Too Late

By Sharmini Peries for The Real News - It's the Real News Network. I'm Sharmini Peries coming to you from Baltimore. On Tuesday, President Barack Obama sent a new proposal to Congress that was prepared for him by the Pentagon to close down Guantanamo Bay detention facility located in Cuba. The prison currently holds 93 detainees, 34 of whom are cleared for release. Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Obama explained why he wants to close down the detention facility. Let's have a look.

TTIP Will Not Be Finished While Obama Is President

By John Brinkley for Forbes - The Obama administration has all but given up on a trade agreement with the European Union. Negotiations on the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership continue, but the administration is so invested in saving its other free trade agreement – the Trans-Pacific Partnership – that it has punted the T-TIP to the next administration. “I do not believe that we’re going to reach a T-TIP agreement before the president leaves office,”

More Than 1,000 Protesters Prepping For Obama Summit

By Brett Kelman, Anna Rumer and Rosalie Murphy for The Desert Sun - Protests have been planned over Obama’s aggressive deportation policy, the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement and the dreadful human rights records of some of the visiting nations, according to protest organizers, who estimated how many people will show up. The largest confirmed demonstrations will oppose the Cambodian and Vietnamese governments, but authoritarian leaders from other nations will likely be met with opposition also. Protester groups said they will stand united against the oppression and corruption that is rampant throughout the governments of Southeast Asia.
