Video: Last Week Of Testimony In Bradley Manning Prosecution

This is likely to be the last week of testimony in the Bradley Manning prosecution.  Some twenty witnesses are expected to testify during the final portion of the sentencing phase, including Bradley Manning himself. Communities are preparing to respond to the sentencing of Bradley Manning which is likely to occur next week. The Bradley Manning Support Network is calling on people to respond immediately after the sentence is announced. Our primary message for these response rallies: 'President Obama: Pardon Bradley Manning.' Please share this post widely on Facebook, Twitter and other social media. The corporate media shamefully has not covered this trial or fairly reported on this case so many Americans still do not understand what the prosecution of Bradley Manning means. It is our responsibility to let them know the importance of the actions Bradley Manning took for all Americans, indeed for the people of the world.

Bradley Manning to Speak for Defense During Sentencing Hearing Next Week

Bradley Manning will make a rare statement before his defense finishes arguments in his sentencing hearing next week, his lawyers said Friday. The 25-year-old faces up to 90 years in prison for the largest leak of classified government information in US history. Manning did not make a statement at his trial. Defense attorney David Coombs said Manning will give a statement Wednesday. The defense team is set to begin presenting evidence Monday. The former military intelligence analyst gave more than 700,000 documents and some battlefield video to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks while working in Iraq. He was convicted last month of 20 counts, including federal Espionage Act violations and theft.

Video: Cornel West and Chris Hedges Discuss Bradley Manning Verdict

Army whistleblower Bradley Manning was acquitted of 'Aiding the enemy,' on July 30, 2013, while convicted of 20 other charges. On August 4 Cornel West was joined by former NYT correspondent Chris Hedges and members of the Bradley Manning Support Network for a discussion of the threat to whistleblowers and government transparency posed by Bradley Manning's trial. Visit www.bradleymanning.org for more information. The event took place at the Friends Meeting of Washington D.C. Next week at Ft. Meade the defense team will call twenty-four witnesses to the stand for incredible testimony regarding Bradley's exceptional character. If you can make it to the trial, this is a great time to attend.

Bradass87: Bradley Manning Play Comes To Washington, DC

Bradass87 is a compelling political drama, examining the motivations of WikiLeaks whistleblower, 25 year old PFC Bradley Manning who is currently facing life in prison for exposing the truth about the American government’s conduct overseas. The source of the Collateral Murder video, the Iraq and Afghanistan War Logs, The Guantanamo Files and the State Department Cables, Bradley has been nominated 3 times for the Nobel Peace prize, and held in extreme solitary confinement. The play is made up of primary source material: chat logs that led to his arrest in Iraq, transcripts from his ongoing trial at Ft Meade Maryland, and quotes from Daniel Ellsberg, Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama, Julian Assange and other notable voices. This story has enormous implications for our country’s democracy. Bradass87 has been performed in New York City in theaters and on the streets.

Obama’s Abuse Of The Espionage Act Is Modern-Day McCarthyism

Only ten people in American history have been charged with espionage for leaking classified information, seven of them under Barack Obama. The effect of the charge on a person's life – being viewed as a traitor, being shunned by family and friends, incurring massive legal bills – is all a part of the plan to force the whistleblower into personal ruin, to weaken him to the point where he will plead guilty to just about anything to make the case go away. I know. The three espionage charges against me made me one of "the Obama Seven".

Manning’s Mom: “He Will Always Be My Innocent Superman”

The aunt who helped raise Bradley after his parents’ marriage collapsed, says: ‘If anyone was going to get themselves arrested for leaking hundreds of thousands of secret documents and end up in jail for it, it was going to be our Bradley. 'He just seemed to have a burning sense of wanting to right any injustice from such a young age. ‘He’d had a very tough childhood in many ways and he’d had to grow up too quickly. His childhood was cut short by all the unhappiness he experienced as a boy.’ Mrs Staples believes the world will one day see Bradley’s actions as heroic. She said: ‘How many people wish the Nazi death camp guards who looked the other way had done what Bradley did?

Bradley Manning Petition Signers Offer To Serve His Sentence For Him

Matt Sledge of the Huffington Post covers the campaign of people willing to serve Bradley Manning's sentence. Since this article was published on August 3rd, the number of people pledging to serve some of Manning's time has increased to more than 3,130. In addition, the potential sentence Manning faces has been reduced to 90 years. If Manning were to receive the maximum sentence, each person pledging would serve 10 days.

Bradley Manning’s Maximum Possible Sentence Cut To 90 Years

A military judge has reduced Army Pfc. Bradley Manning's maximum possible sentence in the WikiLeaks case to 90 years in prison. Manning had faced up to 136 years in prison after he was convicted of charges related to his disclosure of classified information to the anti-secrecy website. But the judge, Army Col. Denise Lind, found during his sentencing hearing Tuesday that a number of the charges refer to the same actions and therefore were duplicative for sentencing purposes.

Bradley Manning Play Wins Award

A play about the American soldier who passed military secrets toWikiLeaks has won an award for drama. The Radicalisation Of Bradley Manning by Tim Price has been announced as the first winner of the James Tait Black Prize for Drama. In the play, Manning's life is charted from his teenage years in Wales to the present day, convicted of espionage in the US. The £10,000 award is the first of a new drama category of Britain's oldest literary awards. It was launched last year by the University of Edinburgh in partnership with the National Theatre of Scotland and in association with the Traverse Theatre.

Manning Conviction Under Espionage Act Is Blatant Threat to Civil Liberties

Jesselyn Radack of the Government Accountability Project, a former Department of Justice whistleblower herself, said the consequences of Manning being found guilty of six counts under the Espionage Act should not be underestimated. She compared it to the failed attempt by the U.S. government to prosecute Daniel Ellsberg, source of the 1970s Pentagon Papers on the Vietnam war. "This is Obama's first conviction against a non-spy under the act," she said. "He has now managed to do what Nixon couldn't."

Americans Offer To Serve Manning’s Prison Term For Him

Supporters of Bradley Manning are willing to put their life on the line and serve part of his potential 136-year prison sentence and are urging the military judge in charge of the case to consider this option. The online petition titled "I Will Proudly Serve Part of Bradley Manning's Sentence," has gathered more than 1,700 signatures out of 2000 needed to submit it to Major General Jeffrey S. Buchanan, who will review the sentence of Bradley Manning once the military judge Colonel Denise Lind makes the ruling. If such a request is to get accepted by the US authorities, it would mean that each participant would serve less than a month, if divided into equal parts.

More Than 2100 Pledge To Serve Part Of Manning’s Jail Time

Bradley Manning has already served 1,166 days in jail. We don’t think Manning should serve another day in jail. He has served all of us with his heroic, humanitarian whistleblowing. More than 2100 people showed their support for Bradley Manning by signing up to serve some of his prison sentence. This outpouring of support has happened in less than 48 hours. If Manning was given the full potential sentence of 136 years, each would serve 23.2 days! If we get to 3,000 today, each would serve 16 days.

Government Unable To Show Any Deaths From Manning Leaks

Top government officials testifying in open court for Manning's sentencing in recent days have cited no credible evidence his leaks led directly to any deaths. They have instead spoken to diplomatic sources placed at risk and strayed foreign relations. In the words of one official, some allies got "chesty." Nevertheless, the most explosive claim about Manning's leaks -- that battlefield reports from Iraq and Afghanistan got U.S. sources killed -- seems to have been settled. The prosecution's first witness was Brig. Gen. Robert Carr, who led the Department of Defense's review of the WikiLeaks releases. Not a single death could be linked to names in the WikiLeaks files, Carr testified. After more than a year of searching, the task force found a single instance where the Taliban claimed to have killed an Afghan source because of WikiLeaks. But then they discovered the cables did not actually contain the source's name. "The name was not there," Carr said.

Why Was Court Sketch Artist & WikiLeaks Truck Driver Banned From Court?

The courtroom sketch artist and activist, who had been driving the WikiLeaks Truck on to Fort Meade just about every day of court proceedings in Bradley Manning’s court martial, was banned from the military base on July 26. It was the day of the defense’s closing argument and Clark Stoeckley did not want to upstage the defense by trying to grab headlines with his side of the story on what happened, but that day Stoeckley was escorted after being told he was banned by the garrison commander because he had sent out what had been perceived as threatening tweets. Stoeckley described how he had walked back into the courtroom when a paralegal officer pulled him aside and walked to a location near the courtroom, where had never been before. Essentially, he said it was where Manning goes every time he is taken out of court. The paralegal officer told him he had been banned from the trial and was losing his credentials.
