King Musk’s Government Purge Hits A Snag

It is now clear beyond any question that Elon Musk is de facto president of the United States—indeed, not just that, but a ruler who is exercising more power than any president in American history. Central to his effort to consolidate that power further is his ongoing plot to purge the federal bureaucracy and replace anyone not loyal to himself with toadies and cronies, much like how Stalin cemented his dictatorship over the Soviet Union in the 1920s. The plan follows how Musk ruined Twitter: He is offering a so-called buyout to most government employees, attempting to convince them to leave with a big cash bribe—but with a tight deadline.

Federal Workers, Stay In Your Jobs And Help Resist

Federal workers are on the front lines of the Trump-Musk regime’s illegal and destructive orders. The email sent to federal employees urging them to resign in exchange for uncertain benefits is clearly aimed at purging critical government employees and replacing them with loyalists and ideologues. The email promises workers up to eight months of pay if they resign by February 6. At first glance, this might sound like a generous offer. But neither Elon Musk nor U.S. President Donald Trump have the legal authority to make such a promise.

A Guide For Federal Employees Under Siege

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been inundated with messages from concerned federal employees. Many of you have reported disturbing developments involving Elon Musk and his inner circle—including private contractors from Musk's companies allegedly accessing sensitive Office of Personnel Management (OPM) servers and locking federal employees out of their systems. These actions raise serious legal and ethical concerns, and we must confront them strategically. I understand your fear and frustration. You’re being targeted because authoritarian leaders know that professional public servants—those of you who uphold the rule of law—are the greatest obstacle to their agenda.

Workers Rally Against Racism In Federal Public Service

Workers marched from the Human Rights monument to the Privy Council Office (PCO) in Ottawa demanding an end to anti-Black racism in the federal public service on Thursday. The demonstration was hosted by the Black Class Action Secretariat and various public sector unions to mark Emancipation Day, which commemorates when enslaved Indigenous and Black Peoples in the British Empire were liberated in 1834.  The rally comes after the secretariat along with its allies in the Coalition Against Workplace Discrimination revealed findings from an internal report from the Privy Council Office. It showed evidence of widespread discrimination within the office, which manages the public service.

Canada’s Largest-Ever Strike Against A Sole Employer Is Underway

Canada is in the midst of the largest strike against a single employer in the country’s history. On April 19, 155,000 public sector workers — who have been without a contract for more than two years — walked off the job, setting up 250 picket lines across Canada. Thus far, the government’s approach to negotiations with the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) has been, at best, ham-fisted. The bulk of the workers — 120,000 employees of various government departments who answer to the Treasury Board — are asking for an annual 4.5 percent wage increase retroactive to June 2021, when negotiations with the government began.
