Obama Approves PA Plan To Privatize And Eliminate Medicaid

The Obama administration has given final approval to a Pennsylvania plan that essentially privatizes Medicaid and abolishes the program as an entitlement. Pennsylvania Republican Governor Tom Corbett’s Healthy PA plan is an alternative to the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion. The state and the Obama administration had negotiated for months over Corbett’s proposal, which will begin December 1 and will be called Healthy PA Private Coverage Option. Corbett said, in a prepared statement: “From the beginning, I said we needed a plan that was created in Pennsylvania, for Pennsylvania, a plan that would allow us to reform a financially unsustainable Medicaid program and increase access to health care for eligible individuals through the private market.” The federal government similarly praised the plan, saying, “Like we are doing in Pennsylvania, [the US Department of Health and Human Services] and CMS [Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services] are committed to supporting state flexibility and working with states on innovative solutions that work within the confines of the law to expand Medicaid to low-income individuals.” In fact, the plan seeks to undermine and restrict health care coverage.

Obama To Reward Loan Company Accused Of Cheating Troops

The Obama administration plans to reward Navient Corp, the student loan specialist formerly owned by Sallie Mae, with new business some three months after federal prosecutors accused the company of intentionally cheating troops on their federal student loans, according to three sources familiar with the administration's plans. The move is likely to stoke comparisons to recent multi-billion-dollar settlements reached between big banks and federal authorities over financial crisis-era misdeeds. Banks agreed to pay sizable sums, but public interest groups have criticized the settlements because the banks suffered few business consequences and their executives escaped criminal and civil charges. "It's very disappointing," said Jason Collette, national organizer for Alliance For A Just Society, a network of state-based advocacy groups. "Until a company loses its federal contracts or a senior executive is punished, these fines are just the cost of doing business." In May, Navient and its former parent, Sallie Mae, agreed to pay a combined $139 million to resolve Department of Justice allegations that the two companies had swindled up to 60,000 service members out of tens of millions of dollars and forced other borrowers to pay unfair fees on their student loans. At a news conference announcing the settlement, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said he had instructed his staff to immediately conduct a review to determine "what appropriate actions, if any," should be taken against Navient in response to the allegations.

The NSA’s New Partner: Saudi Arabia’s Brutal State Police

The NSA “intends to provide direct analytic and technical support to TAD.” The goal is “to facilitate the Saudi government’s ability to utilize SIGINT to locate and track individuals of mutual interest within Saudi Arabia.” Even before this new initiative in 2012, the CIA and other American intelligence agencies had been working with the Saudi regime to bolster “internal security” and track alleged terrorists. According to the memo, the NSA began collaborating with the MOD in 2011 on a “sensitive access initiative… focused on internal security and terrorist activity on the Arabian Peninsula”; that partnership was conducted “under the auspices of CIA’s relationship with the MOI’s Mabahith (General Directorate for Investigations, equivalent to FBI).” The NSA’s formal “Third Party” relationship with the Saudis involves arming the Ministry of Interior with highly advanced surveillance technology.

Net Neutrality Activists Protest At Two Obama California Fundraisers

Aware that President Obama was hitting congressional fundraisers that day in Silicon Valley and L.A. net neutrality activists held protests at both events. The mission: to push the president to live up to his 2007 campaign promise of taking a “back seat to no one” in his commitment to Net Neutrality. On Wednesday morning, more than 100 activists rallied in Los Altos — the heart of the Silicon Valley. In the afternoon another crowd gathered in Los Angeles, where Free Press’ Mary Alice Crim led a rally of close to 150 activists in Hancock Park — directly across the street from where 10 helicopters bearing the presidential entourage landed in the parking lot of L.A. High School...speakers who urged Obama to stand up for the open Internet.

Protest For Net Neutrality At Obama Fundraiser

On the campaign trail in 2007, candidate Obama visited Google headquarters in Silicon Valley and pledged to "take a back seat to no one" in his commitment to Net Neutrality. Since then he has appointed two FCC chairmen — Julius Genachowski and Tom Wheeler — who have failed to live up to the president's pledge. On July 23, Obama will return to California for a big fundraiser and we want to remind him how much we all care about the open Internet. That's why we're holding a big rally in L.A. to get the message out. WHERE: We’ll rally in the park at the Memorial Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, 4625 W. Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90019 (Olympic and S Mullen Ave.)

Bi-Partisan Reps Tells Obama: Get Congressional Approval For Iraq

We do not believe any such intervention could be either quick or easy. And, we doubt it would be effective in meeting either humanitarian or strategic goals, and we are certain that it could very well be counter-productive. . . We write to urge respect for the constitutional requirements for using force abroad. The Constitution vests in Congress the power and responsibility to authorize offensive military action abroad. The use of military force in Iraq is something the Congress should fully debate and authorize. Members of Congress must consider all the facts and alternatives before we can determine whether military action would contribute to ending this most recent violence, create a climate for political stability, and protect civilians from greater harm.
