Colonizers Still: It Is Time For Our Relatives’ Things To Be Returned

The word “colonizing” means it comes from someplace else and takes over an area. For example, there are such things as “colonizing plants.” These are plants that were not originally from an area, but their seeds blow in and start growing, cutting off the food and water that was for the original plants. The one that usually comes to mind for me is the Russian Thistle that grows so big with its purple flowers and thorns and can take over an area in a couple of years, killing off all the original plants. It always makes me sad when American white people still try to tell us what to do because that is “colonization.” For human beings it means imposing a way of life, including values from another culture, onto those that have their own culture and ways of being.

Huy Urges UN To Protect Indigenous Prisoner Religious Freedoms

Washington, DC - Yesterday Gabe Galanda, Chairman of the Huy Board of Advisors, delivered an intervention in Washington, DC to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Religious Freedom or Belief, Ahmed Shaheed, regarding obstacles Indigenous prisoners in the United States face to enjoying and exercising the right to freedom of religion or belief. Shaheed held a consultation with Indigeneous peoples from the United States regarding obstacles they face in exercising traditional religious freedoms.  In October 2022, he will issue a report at the United Nations General Assembly regarding impediments to Indigenous religious rights worldwide.  The Native American Rights Fund also delivered an intervention to the Special Rapporteur.

Jordan Releases Note Of Protest Against Israeli Attacks In Al-Aqsa Mosque

Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates sent Israel a note of protest calling it to stop its attacks in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and respect its current historic and legal position.  The Ministry condemned in a statement the continuation of Israel's attacks in Al-Aqsa Mosque as it allowed the extremist settlers to raid Al-Aqsa Mosque in the last 10 days of Ramadan with severe protection from the Israeli police.  Daifallah ALfayez, the spokesperson of the ministry, said that the Jordanian kingdom condemned the Israeli attacks against Al-Aqsa Mosque and considered it a violation of the current historic and legal position, the international law, and the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan and Al-Aqsa Mosque.

US Claims Religious Repression Underway In Vietnam, But Where’s The Evidence?

Recently, the U.S. Department of State issued a report in which they claimed that religious freedom is being suppressed in Vietnam. The Vietnamese government is of course capable of speaking for itself and responding to this defamation. However, I think that Americans also have a responsibility to speak out against baseless claims made by our reactionary government. And as an American living in Hanoi, I can tell you—this is a baseless claim indeed. Anyone that has spent any time in Vietnam can plainly see the evidence right in front of their face that accusations about a lack of religious freedom are lies. Walking around the capital city, there are Buddhist pagodas, temples of various sects, a mosque, and even a Chabad House Synagogue. Even though Christians make up a small minority of the population of Vietnam, on Christmas Eve the streets in front of the city’s churches are packed with worshippers and friendly onlookers listening to the music and enjoying the celebration alongside their fellow citizens.
