Taksim Square’s Last Man Standing

A fresh meme has emerged from the protests on Istanbul's Taksim Square. And, as RFE/RL correspondent Deana Kjuka reports, this time it's not about penguins -- although they do make an appearance -- but rather a silent "standing man." On the evening of June 17, for more than five hours, Erdem Gunduz stood motionless on Taksim Square. He simply stared at the portrait of Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, that hangs outside the Ataturk Cultural Center in the capital. The photo quickly went viral, and within hours #duranadam (Turkish for "standing man") and #standingman were trending on Twitter.

Turkey Sunday: Streets Closed, Supporters of Erdogan Bused In, Protesters Blocked, Media Blamed

Istanbul came to a standstill on Sunday as an army of riot police and gendarmerie cordoned off streets and use teargas on protesters in the centre of the city while the prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, staged a rally. Protest organisers had called for a million-strong demonstration at Taksim Square, but the entire area was cordoned off, making access impossible. Stretches of the motorways encircling Istanbul were also closed by police to try to prevent protesters getting to the city centre. The opposite conditions applied to government supporters making their way en masse to hear the prime minister. The Istanbul municipality and the AKP laid on buses and other transport to help boost the numbers attending. Erdogan inveighed against the international media, blaming the BBC and CNN for distorting the drama of the past three weeks in what he repeatedly alleged was an international plot to divide and diminish Turkey.

Turkish Police Confiscate Piano Used to Serenade Taksim Square Protesters

Turkish police have reportedly confiscated a piano that was being used to serenade Istanbul's protesters. Davide Martello claims that officials seized his grand piano as part of Saturday's raid on Gezi Park. Martello became an unlikely icon for the sit-in at Taksim Square, where thousands of people had gathered to protest the increasingly authoritarian rule of prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. On Wednesday night, the German musician wheeled his piano into the throng and began performing for the masses – staging swelling piano recitals that lasted for as long as 14 hours. He had soon attracted a huge coterie of supporters, dozens of news reports and the makings of aprofitable campaign. "The idea is to inspire politicians through music," Martello told the New York Times. On Saturday night, at Erdoğan's order, police moved into Taksim Square, violently clearing the protesters. "The Turkish police seized my piano, my car and my Iphone. I need help!!!"

Turkey: Police Escalate Attacks, Including on Infirmaries and Doctors

We saw last night that police were raiding hotels and taking any safety and health supplies they could find. Police removed masks, water bottles and helmets. They continue to raid the hotels, where people are taking refuge, today and remove supplies. There is a call out for more medical supplies including bandages and families are urged to place clean towels and clothing outside of their doors. An infirmary was raided today. The patients are reported to be ok, but the infirmary is no longer able to function. Four doctors were arrested for providing care to the injured people.

Turkey: Largest Public Union Calls General Strike

One of Turkey's main public sector labor unions said it would call a general strike for Monday after riot police stormed an Istanbul park, firing tear gas and percussion bombs to evict hundreds of anti-government demonstrators on Saturday. "We had already taken a decision to go on strike if there was an intervention on the park. So tomorrow we will declare a strike for Monday," said Mustafa Turgut, spokesman of the Public Workers Unions Confederation (KESK), which has some 240,000 members in 11 unions. A second union grouping, the Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions (DISK), was holding an emergency meeting on whether to also call a strike, a DISK official told Reuters.

Message from Turkey: Istanbul is Living a Hell

As for the event I mentioned the other day, Kizilay, the Turkish Red Crescent, did indeed refuse to transport hurt people, and a very reliable source (doctor) narrated me the event. The doctors in a small private hospital had to pay a private company to transport a seriously injured person who in the end survived. It's a scandal. We are living in a police state. The police arrested 49 lawyers invading the Palace of Justice the other day. Now they are trying to arrest every single doctor and nurse who aids the injured protestors. The government and the governor of Istanbul still talk of "marginal groups". The mask of democracy and the rule of law have fallen in this country. Pray for us and spread the news."

URGENT UPDATE: PM Erdogan Orders Attack, Arrests Doctors

Tonight, Prime Minister Erdogan kept his threat to clear Gezi Park in Istanbul. Hundreds of riot police were sent in with Water Cannons. They cleared the park with chemical-laced water and pepper spray and fired tear gas canisters and bullets at the protesters. There are reports that police used the water cannons to drive at the protesters and disperse them and videos have been released of protesters lying down in front of the trucks and at least one protester who had to be rescued from underneath a truck. Once the park was cleared, protesters marched by the thousands through the city playing music and chanting. Supporters banged pots and pans outside of their windows.

Everywhere Taksim! Everywhere Resistance!

On the 18th day of our resistance, on Saturday June 15th, we will continue our occupation for the park and all the living creatures within it, our trees, our life spaces, our private lives, our freedoms, and our future. We will pursue this struggle until our demands are met. This resistance will be the reflection of the collective will of Taksim Solidarity and a symbol of our comprehensive struggle. From this day forward, we will continue to fight against all kinds of injustice and suffering in our country with the dynamism and strength generated by our struggle which has spread across the country and perhaps the world. We are stronger, more organized and more hopeful than we were 18 days ago.

Video: #OccupyGezi Brought Back Our Rusted Hope

The unity and joy of the people in Gezi Park is apparent in this video. As one said the occupation of Gezi has "brought back our rusted hope . . . and our subsided dreams." Others described the protest as different people working together in unity, "like trees in a forest." This video shows the people who Prime Minister Erdogan has promised to "clean the park of terrorists" These are the people Erdogan accuses of being "troublemakers" controlled by "foreign forces, international media and market speculators of stoking the conflict. What Erdogan really fears is the people in the video, a cross-section of Turkey -- brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and grandparents so he tells the media that they are terrorists.

BREAKING: Turkey Threatens Doctors and First Responders, Violates Medical Neutrality

However, the response by Prime Minister Erdogan has been severe and violent. He threatens the protesters daily. Riot police have repeatedly stormed the park and attacked protesters. They’ve used water cannons, pepper spray and shot tear gas canisters into crowds. The protesters have stayed strong against these assaults, doing what they can to protect themselves with helmets and gas masks made from plastic bottles, but so far more than 5,000 protesters have been injured, some critically, and 4 protesters are dead. Medic tents were set up in Gezi Park, but these were not sufficient to handle the severely wounded protesters. Makeshift hospitals have been set up in hotel lobbies and during some of the most chaotic moments, protesters formed human chains to keep the streets open so that ambulances carrying the wounded could pass through.

The Piano Man and Love in Gezi Park

Every revolution needs its heroes. Ours is called Davide. He is the pianoman. Yesterday and tonight he has been playing in Taksim for twelve hours straight, until ten o’ clock in the morning. When the rain started, people held a canvas over him and his piano, and he continued to play. ‘Imagine’, ‘Let it be’, ‘We are the World’, ‘Bella Ciao’, etc. etc. Fifty meters away there was a row of police buses and water cannons ready for the final attack. On the other side, candles were burning in honour of the people who died in the protest.

Popular Resistance Newsletter – What’s Your Breaking Point?

When Edward Snowden reached his breaking point, the world saw the truth about the vast extent of spying by the NSA on Americans and people around the world. In an act of conscience, Snowden released secret information, saying “My sole motive is to inform the public as to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them.” Snowden sparked protest, lawsuits, criticism of the administration and US intelligence. His action shows the power that comes when someone inside the system break ranks and tells the truth. Successful movements depend on people breaking ranks: questioning, demurring, disobeying, defecting and withdrawing support.

Turkey’s Leader Issues ‘Final Warning’ to Gezi Park Protesters

Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, delivered a stark "final warning" on Thursday to thousands of defiant protesters still camped out in Istanbul's Gezi park, demanding that they end their occupation. Describing the protesters as troublemakers, Erdoğan said the government had reached the "end of its patience" over the continuing demonstrations against his leadership, in which five people have been killed since 31 May. Erdoğan had earlier issued a 24-hour deadline to clear Taksim Square and Gezi park. Mothers of Gezi Park Sit-In Protesters Form Human Barricade to Keep Police Away

The Prime Minister of Turkey has threatened protesters with removal once again. Taksim Square is crowded with people, many chanting against the government. Mothers of the protesters camping at Gezi Park have formed a human barricade near the police forces on duty. They then walked hand in hand through the park and chanted slogans such as, "We gave birth to these children." At another part of the square, a large number of people listened to Sicilian musician David Marcello's piano recital.

Turkey PM Erdogan Orders End to Protests in “24 Hours”

Erdogan’s statements propelled contrasting reactions. They mobilized his supporters, who chanted slogans such as those who raise their hands against the police should have their hands broken. His speech simultaneously pushed more demonstrators onto the streets, who in turn chanted Tayyip will pay and Tayyip, resign. During the heavy hours of the recent crackdown, social media networks teemed with updates from within and outside Turkey, reporting police action and protesters’ responses. With a growing pool of online media and footage such as this that shows police attacking a protester in a wheelchair and prime minister Erdogan far from assuming a conciliatory tone, many are watching closely to see just what kind of an end the next 24 hours will produce.
