Imagine Farming That Actually Heals The Earth

By Sami Grover in TreeHugger- One of the most inspiring recent developments in the discussion about farming has been the shift from talking about "sustainable" agriculture to advocating for "regenerative" agriculture. Instead of seeking to be less bad, say a growing number of farmers and farming experts, the farming industry should be positioning itself to be good—to heal the harm being done to our planet. From slowing, and maybe even reversing global climate change through soil carbon sequestration to creating perennial food crops that mimic natural prairies and help protect our waterways, there are many methods that could be deployed to both reduce farming's negative impact and simultaneously start rebuilding natural ecosystem services that have previously been degraded.

Five Movements Igniting Change For The Earth

Today, in 2015, we live in a time of rapid transformation. Some say we are on the verge of a great shift in human consciousness. Growing numbers of people are looking at the way they live, the way humans operate on the planet, and deciding that we must change our course. Once a paradigm has shifted, there is no going back. We emerge on the other side with a completely renewed perspective, unable to return to our old way of thinking. Many great movements have emerged in recent years, pushing us to leave behind old beliefs, reimagine the map of the world, and open our eyes to a brilliant new future. The theme of Earth Day 2015 is “It’s Our Turn to Lead.” Here are five movements that are leading the way in creating paradigm-shifting change for the Earth:

14 Year Old Rallies People Around World To Protect Planet

Xiuhtezcatl Martinez is not your average teen. At the rebellious age of 14, he has given a Ted Talk and spoken twice at major United Nation’s forums. President Obama awarded him the Youth Change Maker of the Year Award and he is a member of the Presidential Youth Council to advise the president on youth views and policy. He is the youth director of Earth Guardians, a non-profit environmental organization that is committed to protecting the water, air, Earth and atmosphere. To reach young people, Xiuhtezcatl and his younger brother Itzcuauhtli started an eco-hip-hop duo in the namesake of their non-profit, “Earth Guardians.”

The Big Shift Needed To Protect Earth: Restore The Commons

The focus for most people’s dreams would be the familiar places they love—neighborhoods, cities, suburbs, villages and countryside. Think what could happen if we declared these places commons, which belong to all of us and need to be improved for future generations. Citizens would stand up, lock arms with their neighbors and demand new political and economic directions for our society. They would open discussions with business leaders, government officials, scientists and design professionals on how to create resilient, equitable, greener communities. But the conversation wouldn’t stop there. We’d plan for less carbon and waste and poverty, but also for more fun and joy and conviviality—which are equally strategic goals.

Saving Passengers Of The Good Ship ‘Titan… Earth’

From a design perspective, the Earth is without peer in the known Universe if life support is the primary consideration. The Earth took more than four billion years to evolve into the state it had reached by 1790. It was perfectly functional as a life-support system for billions of species interacting in a phenomenal web of life that nurtured not only species but each individual as well. But then the industrial revolution, fuelled by coal, oil and gas, starting adversely impacting on that life-support system, although it wasn’t until the twentieth century that scientists worked this out. Fortunately, we know now – see ‘Game Over for the Climate’ – and there is still a little time left to take the profound action necessary to halt and, in some key ways, reverse the design alterations to the Earth that we have been making for the past 200 years. But will we act?
