In an article in the mid-coast Maine publication called the (August 18) it was reported that Bath Iron Works (BIW) had just reached agreement with the Machinists Union Local S6 on a new contract. The union represents 4,250 of the shipyard's 6,500 workers. The article concluded by reporting that BIW is currently building twelve Aegis destroyers at the Maine shipyard. General Dynamics Board Shuts Down Demand For Transparency

During this section there was a very notable proposal introduced by the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY requesting that the General Dynamics Board of Directors prepare a human rights report. The proposal points out that General Dynamics’ products and services are used by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, and U.S. government agencies at the U.S.-Mexico border. As General Dynamics’ weapons are used in war crimes and human rights violations against Yemenis, Palestinians, asylum-seekers and beyond, this proposal rightfully calls for General Dynamics to develop and provide transparency on their process to address and remedy the “actual and potential human rights impacts associated with high-risk products and services.”

Activist Confronts Defense Industry CEO For Company’s Role In War Crimes

An anti-war activist confronted General Dynamics CEO Phebe Novakovic on Wednesday during the company’s shareholders’ meeting, accusing the defense industry giant of profiting off war crimes and arming repressive, undemocratic regimes without “moral reflection.”  “I appreciate the care you’ve taken to keep us safe during COVID,” CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin told General Dynamics’ board, which included Novakovic and former Defense Secretary James Mattis. “But,” she added, “I wonder about the care that this company takes to keep people safe from the bombs and the other weapons that you produce that kill innocent people around the world.”  Benjamin then listed off a handful of instances in which General Dynamics’ products were involved in gross human rights abuses and civilian deaths during war, including a marketplace bombing in Yemen in 2016 that killed nearly 100 civilians, including 25 children, and former President Trump’s child separation policy at the U.S. southern border.

Activists Block Rail Line Near General Dynamics Over Arms Sales

London, Ontario - A small group of activists blocked a rail line in east London Friday, demanding the federal government cancel a contract to provide military vehicles to Saudi Arabia. About 15 people from various anti-war groups demonstrated on the railroad tracks at Clarke Road and Oxford Street East in London, just west of the General Dynamics Land Systems plant, which manufactures light armoured vehicles (LAVs). The protest was meant to stop any shipments of military vehicles bound for the middle eastern kingdom. No trains came through during the protest.
