Rage and Ruin: On the Black Panthers

Two scholars, Waldo Martin Jr., a historian at the University of California, Berkeley, and Joshua Bloom, a doctoral candidate in sociology at UCLA, after more than a decade of work, offer a corrective. They demolish the canard that the Panthers were anti-white. What distinguished Newton and Seale’s approach was their refusal to go along with the narrow cultural nationalism that had appealed to so many African-Americans. They fought tremendous battles, sometimes turning deadly, with those who thought, as the saying went, that political power grew out of the sleeve of a dashiki. Bloom and Martin rightly emphasize the Panthers’ steady embrace of a class-based politics with an internationalist bent. The party was inspired by anti-imperialist struggles in Africa, Latin America and Asia. They began by emphasizing the local but soon went global, ultimately establishing an international section in Algiers.

G8 Summit Protest: Riot Police Arrest 57 in Raid

Riot police raided the central London HQ of anti-G8 protesters on Tuesday and hundreds of officers were deployed in the capital as protests took place against next week’s G8 summit. Squatters inside the building, a former police station in Beak Street, off Regent Street, accused police of heavy-handed tactics after they were led out by officers who forced their way in after a tense standoff lasting more than three hours. TV footage showed officers in climbing gear trying to secure the roof, then grabbing a protester who appeared to be trying to jump off the rooftop.

Report from Sao Paulo: Massive Police Violence Against Nonviolent Protesters

The protests in San Paulo, Brazil started with the bus fare hikes but have become about many things, including police violence. When the police started firing tear gas, the protesters stood their ground for a while and chanted, "Thursday will be bigger." It most certainly was. There is a new protest planned for Monday about 15 minutes away from my house. I have already started rescheduling my classes so I can go. I might have a front row seat to history being made. Once again, social media proves to be a better news source for revolutions around the world than the mainstream media. Incredible tumblrs and websites have been popping up documenting what is happening here in São Paulo and why.

Anaheim Residents Continue Protests After Cops Open Fire at Women, Kids

The police abuse in Anaheim, CA is inexcuseable. First they shoot a young man for no reason, other than he fled not wanting to talk to police. Then, they attack people who come outside to find out why he was shot. They shoot rubber bullets into a crowd of parents with their children and then let a dog loose on the crowd. The police also tried to purchase video of the event, no doubt in an effort to cover-up their abuse. U.S. police forces have become militarized and are too often abusive of Americans. We know not all police behave this way but too many do and those that do undermine the good policing of those that treat citizens with the respect we deserve. We applaud the residents of Anaheim for staying non-violent and not giving any justification to this abusive police behavior.
