The State Of The ‘State Of Palestine’

United Nations General Assembly sessions, held each September since 51 nations convened in a Methodist church hall in London in 1946, come and go and mostly go without event. The General Assembly is set to begin its 80th session come Sept. 9, and it is difficult to imagine this one will go off uneventfully. To put the point simply, Israel has murdered, starved and terrorized too many Palestinians for this year’s gathering at the Secretariat in Manhattan to conclude without some conclusions. It remains only what these conclusions will be. Several weeks ago a group of 15 nations — among them prominent members of the Atlantic alliance — stated their intention to announce their formal declaration of Palestinian statehood at this year’s session.

A combination of mistakes, whether through ignorance or design, and significant omissions of fact have left the American public misinformed about why the Palestinians have gone to the United Nations and what they are trying to achieve. The biggest error repeated across the media in hundreds of headlines and stories is that the Palestinians are seeking statehood at the U.N. In fact, Palestine is already legally a sovereign state and is seeking membership of the United Nations, not statehood. [It eventually opted for observer state status after the U.S. blocked membership.] The United Nations does not grant or recognize statehood. Only states can recognize other states bilaterally.

As UN member states prepare to convene in New York on 17 June for the High-Level Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, and as France is set to convene selected actors on 13 June with the declared aim of issuing “a clear and urgent call to action to the international community” ahead of the conference, we—the undersigned Palestinian civil society organizations and coalitions in Palestine and in exile—reaffirm our unified demands for a just and lawful resolution grounded in the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

Vatican Officially Recognizes Palestinian State In New Treaty

The Vatican officially recognized the state of Palestine in a new treaty finalized Wednesday, immediately sparking Israeli ire and accusations that the move hurt peace prospects. The treaty, which concerns the activities of the Catholic Church in Palestinian territory, makes clear that the Holy See has switched its diplomatic recognition from the Palestine Liberation Organization to the state of Palestine. The Vatican had welcomed the decision by the U.N. General Assembly in 2012 to recognize a Palestinian state. But the treaty is the first legal document negotiated between the Holy See and the Palestinian state and constitutes official diplomatic recognition. "Yes, it's a recognition that the state exists," said the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi. The Israeli foreign ministry said it was "disappointed" by the development.

Marijuana Activists Are Chaining Themselves To ‘Liberty Pole’

At the very deliberate time of 4:20 a.m. Wednesday, dozens of D.C. marijuana activists arrived at the Mall. They put on some music, constructed a 42-foot “liberty pole,” and chained themselves to it. “Chained to this pole, I feel more free than I have in my memory,” said protester David Keniston. “We are living democracy right now.” Led by the DC Cannabis Campaign, the organization that spearheaded efforts to legalize marijuana in the city, the nearly week-long vigil in which city activists decry congressional meddling into local D.C. affairs began Wednesday. The activists decided to start the around-the-clock protest on April 15, Tax Day, because, as the city’s license plates say, the District has “taxation without representation.”
