Account from Inside Parliament as Anti-Protest Bill Passes in Australia

So this evening I paid a visit to the Victorian State Parliament with a group of around 30 other people. A diverse mix of folk – amongst them unionists, lawyers, environmentalists, people who could get their house bulldozed for the East West tunnel, people who care about peace, refugees and transparency and democracy. We were there to watch the Summary Offences and Amendments Sentencing Bill (Anti Protest Bill) get passed. A law which will allow police unprecedented discretionary powers to ‘move on’ peaceful protesters, and others they might suspect of a fairly broad range of things, from public places.

Strike Debt Moves From Jubilee To Refusal

Creditocracy and the Case for Debt Refusal also marks the transition of Strike Debt beyond the Rolling Jubilee, which successfully abolished almost $15m of debt in one year. Conceived as a limited project, the Rolling Jubilee had an enormous public impact, and far surpassed our goals. While we still have funds to spend on debt buys, we have closed the fund for new contributions so that we can focus our energies on the larger, more long-term goal of building a debtors’ movement. If you want to set up your own Strike Debt chapter, starting with a reading group of Creditocracy is a good way to get one going in your area.

Jan. 25th Action Camp to Stop Construction of Coal Mine

The time to step up is now. Construction has now begun on the Maules Creek Coal Mine in central New South Wales, with bulldozers destroying parts of the Leard State Forest. As the bulldozers have moved in though, campaigners from all around the country have joined hands with the local community to stop the construction. Protesters have started a blockade of the entrance to the mine, turning back vehicles seeking to clear the forest for construction of rail infrastructure. We need your help however to keep this going.

Highway 95’s Largest OmegaLoad More Again: Round 2

"On Sunday night, November 10, between 10 pm and 6 am, the Washington and Idaho activists and allies of Wild Idaho Rising Tide (WIRT) monitored and protested the heaviest and longest megaload of tar sands extraction equipment to recently traverse U.S. Highway 95 and Interstate 90 in Idaho (photos and videos available on Tuesday) [1]. Like the controversial oversize evaporator that met four nights of fierce resistance from Nez Perce, Idle No More, Wild Idaho Rising Tide, and allied activists on Highway 12 in early August, this core of a second shipment that also arrived at the Port of Wilma on July 22 weighs up to 644,000 pounds. But unlike the earlier 255-foot-long megaload, this mammoth transport stretches 297 feet long, crowds out other traffic on mostly two-lane Highway 95 with its 16-foot width, and barely clears standard 16-foot-tall overpasses with its 15.9-foot height"

Earth Quaker Action Team Models Rapid-Fire Escalation At Power Shift

"The young climate activists who gather in Pittsburgh, Pa. this weekend for the Power Shift 2013 conference won’t have to wait long to get back on the streets and take action. On Monday, Oct. 21, Earth Quaker Action Team plans to lead the biggest bank branch action in history. Starting with relatively calm silent occupations at several Pittsburgh PNC branches, then disrupting the bank’s lunchtime business around town before an action where some will risk arrest, the day will mark another step in Earth Quaker Action Team’s escalating campaign to get PNC to stop financing mountaintop removal coal mining. It will also serve as a model of rapid-fire escalation for youth at Power Shift. Earth Quaker Action Team, or EQAT (pronounced “equate”), was founded on a belief that to win a just and sustainable economy will require smart strategy. "
