ACLU Pushes Back Against Obama Nominee Who Authored Drone Murder Memo

The ACLU wrote today to the full Senate membership urging senators to read key memos on the drone targeted killing program before voting on the nomination of David Barron to the First Circuit Court of Appeals. You can read the full letter here. Mr. Barron is the reported author of at least two memos from the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel authorizing the killing of an American citizen by an armed drone away from any battlefield. In order to uphold its constitutional obligations, the Senate must demand access to these and other legal memos on the killing program before moving forward with any vote on his nomination. The implications of Mr. Barron's secret memos are broad, having propped up the U.S. government's killing program. From our letter: The OLC opinions written or signed by Mr. Barron helped form the purported legal foundation for a large-scale killing program that has resulted in, as Senator Lindsey Graham stated last year, as many as 4,700 deaths by drone attacks, including the deaths of four American citizens acknowledged by Attorney General Eric Holder (one of the United States citizens killed by a missile fired from a drone was a 16-year old boy).

Drone Protest Wedding Reception Held At White House

On Sunday, May 4, 2014, human rights activists used street theater in front of the White House to simulate a wedding attacked by a US drone strike in Yemen. Activists sought to educate the public about how terrifying it would be to have the same thing happen in the US, and motivate people to take action against the drones. The bride, groom and the guests all wore fancy wedding clothes and a Catholic priest conducted the ceremony. On December 13, 2013, 12 civilians were killed when a Hellfire missile targeted vehicles that were part of a wedding procession going toward the groom’s village outside the central Yemeni city of Rad’a. Until now, the Obama administration has failed to compensate ––let alone acknowledge–– the families, or most of the innocent drone strike victims in Pakistan and Yemen. This has inflamed anti-American sentiment in Yemen and encouraged more local people to join extremist groups. One person reported on twitter, @sammylafrance, "Handed out stop drones fliers for @codepink today and a man came up to me to say "I'm from Yemen. thank you for acting on this."

Three Arrested At Drone Protest At NSA Headquaters

Three members of the National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance (NCNR) were arrested at NSA headquarters at Fort Meade, Maryland when they obstructed a roadway outside the base’s gates and refused to leave. About twenty protestors in all staged a theatrical “die-in” and read the names of one hundred children they claim have been killed in U.S. drone attacks. They called for an end to the targeted killing program carried out by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, saying that the NSA plays a significant role in providing illegally obtained and sometimes faulty information to the CIA and U.S. military. In a statement, the NCNR said, “The NSA plays an integral role in providing information, including faulty data as reported by leading award-winning journalists, to the Central Intelligence Agency and US Military which in turn carry out the drone strikes. US militarism including the illegal drone program is responsible for violations of international law and is going unchecked by the US Congress. We must hold the US and NSA accountable for the illegal and immoral drone program.”

Spring Days of Action at Hancock Air National Guard Base

The Upstate Coalition to Ground the Drones and End the Wars had a surprise ending to their April action this year. On April 27, they hosted Cornel West at Tucker Missionary Baptist Church, to talk about Connecting the Dots: Poverty, Racism and Drones. The 600 people in attendance gave a standing ovation to Dr. West as he took the stage. He said “none of us wants to engage in that sanitized sterilized, deodorized, truncated discourse that passes for political dialog” in a market driven “news” which creates a “consensus that hides and conceals the catastrophes taking place every day” in the world. Also on the program, Buffalo Hip Hop artist Quadir Lateef presented a new rap about drones and drone victims that he had created for the occasion called "While You Were Watching TV" and Vicki Ross sang her latest song, "Drones Bury Beautiful Lives", a ballad based on the testimony of Afghan youth, Raz Mohammad, about the death of his brother-in-law in a drone attack.

Drones: An All-American Wedding At The White House

You are cordially invited to an *All-American Wedding* on Sunday, the 4th of May at the White House. Join Us on May 4th at 1:00 pm! We will be protesting our government’s use of Drone technology to kill innocent people, even American citizens, in places around the globe where we are not legally at war. We will be petitioning our federal legal apparatus to stand up and hold our politicians and civil servants accountable for war crimes and atrocities using Drone technology. Riding the momentum of the April Days of Actions, CODEPINK DC and Noor Mir (former drone campaign coordinator at CODEPINK, now working at the Washington Peace Center) are recreating the wedding party in Yemen hit by a US drone strike–– in front of the White House on May 4th at 1 pm. We hope to educate the public about the horrors of drone strikes using this street theater, sending our message far and wide by making it into a video.

SOA Watch Walks From Ft. Benning To Atlanta To Protest Drones & Immigrant Persecution

SOA Watch founder Father Roy Bourgeois, Field Organizer Maria Luisa Rosal, our newest Council member Kevin Moran, and long-time SOA Watch activist Irene Rojas DeCambias are currently walking 120 miles from Fort Benning, Georgia to Atlanta, Georgia, to call attention to the SOA, drone warfare, and the persecution of immigrants. Follow their walk on twitter, read daily updates on facebook and on SOAW.org (or join them on the walk). The Right to Peace Walk concludes on Saturday, May 3 at Georgia Tech, where millions of Pentagon dollars fund research into further development of killer drones to be used in wars, often undeclared, with civilian populations too many times the victims. The Walk began April 26 at Ft. Benning, site of the School of the Americas where for decades Latin American troops have been trained in counter-insurgency and population control methods that have been used aginst peasants, indigenous people, union members, students, faith and community leaders seeking equity and justice. The base is also now a testing site for killer drones.

Court Orders U.S. To Release Memo On Drones, Al-Awlaki Killing

A federal appeals court ordered the U.S. Department of Justice to turn over key portions of a memorandum justifying the government's targeted killing of people linked to terrorism, including Americans. In a case pitting executive power against the public's right to know what its government does, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a lower court ruling preserving the secrecy of the legal rationale for the killings, such as the death of U.S. citizen Anwar al-Awlaki in a 2011 drone strike in Yemen. Ruling for the New York Times, a unanimous three-judge panel said the government waived its right to secrecy by making repeated public statements justifying targeted killings. These included a Justice Department "white paper," as well as speeches or statements by officials like Attorney General Eric Holder and former Obama administration counterterrorism adviser John Brennan, endorsing the practice.

Ten Arrested After Good Friday Service Outside Drone Base

Organizers said that they gathered at Beale, "in the shadow of killer drones, modern day equivalents of the cross, to pray, to act, and to build a community of peace." There have been frequent anti-drone demonstrations at Beale, home of the Global Hawk Drone, a surveillance drone that assists in finding targets for armed Predator and Reaper drones. Over fifty people attended the service, which included prayers, songs, Holy Communion, and reflections by Kathy Kelly. Following the service, some demonstrators crossed the demarcation line onto Beale property in an attempt to deliver a letter to the base commander, along with two statements about drones from religious groups: The World Council of Churches' Statement on the Use of Drones and the Right to Life and "A Call from the Faith Based Community to Stop Drone Killings," signed by religious leaders from around the country.

Popular Resistance Newsletter – Democracy Rises In A Time Of Oligarchy

It’s official. The first ever scientific study of democracy in the US finds that we are an oligarchy (ruled by the few). We think it’s more accurate to say plutocracy (ruled by the wealthy). Some correctly say that the US is a representative democracy, but this study shows that the ones being represented are not the people (demos). Jerome Roos writes that we must go deeper than recognizing that the US is an oligarchy and discuss whether this is the natural result of a capitalist system. It can certainly be argued that neoliberal economics, the mature form of capitalism, lead to oligarchy as public goods are concentrated in the hands of a few. But "oli" means "few" and we are many and that is why people power (democracy) can prevail.

US, UK, France Vote Against Probing Legality Of Drone Strikes

In the Miami Herald, John Zarocostas reports from Geneva that the U.N. Human Rights Council agreed on Friday, despite strong objections from the United States, to study whether American drone strikes comply with international law. Several NATO allies abstained. The resolution, drafted by Pakistan and co-sponsored by Yemen, both countries where the U.S. has undertaken multiple drone strikes, was adopted on a 27-6 vote, with 14 abstentions. The resolution urges that all “states” using drones should ensure that they are complying “with their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the United Nations, international human rights law and international humanitarian law, in particular, the principles of precaution, distinction and proportionality.”

Good Friday Anti-Drone Vigil To Be Held At Beale Air Force Base

On April 18 at 3 p.m., Internationally recognized peace activist Kathy Kelly will join anti-drone demonstrators at the Schneider (Main) Gate of Beale Air Force Base at a Good Friday prayer service followed by nonviolent action. Organizers say that they are gathering at Beale, "in the shadow of killer drones, modern day equivalents of the cross, to pray, to act, and to build a community of peace." There have been frequent anti-drone demonstrations at Beale, home of the Global Hawk Drone, a surveillance drone that assists in finding targets for armed Predator and Reaper drones. The prayer service will include songs, prayer, Holy Communion, and reflections by Kathy Kelly. The following clergy will lead the service: The Reverend Dr. Gerald O. (Jerry) Pedersen, former U.S. Marine, present as part of the Honor Guard on the U.S.S. Missouri during the surrender of the Japanese at the end of World War II, retired Lutheran pastor, Sacramento, author of Unfinished Journey: From War to Peace, From Violence to Wholeness, member Veterans for Peace.

‘Fly Kites, Not Drones’

Dozens of people of all ages showed up to the “Fly Kites, Not Drones” event in an effort to raise awareness towards U.S. foreign policy practices as well as fly kites with a message. Kite flying is a popular tradition in Afghanistan, but the pastime was banned during the Taliban reign. “The Kites show us there’s a way to do it peacefully,” Howard Traxmor, who participated in the event said. “We can use drones for agriculture and other needs.” Organizers said the drones are a major part of foreign policy that people need to understand the impact of better. The United States has been using drone attacks in countries such as Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, and Pakistan. However, nationwide controversy has erupted after many believe drone attacks killed innocent civilians and children.

Radical Quilting: Contribute To The Drones Quilt Project

The Drones Quilt Project is currently on tour across the USA. The exhibit consists of 3 to 5 quilts of 36 blocks, each measuring 66″ x 66″, four information panels measuring 20″ x 30″ each, and a resource/take action handout. We hope to have the exhibit travel the country, so if you are interested in hosting the exhibit in your town, please contact us. Check the website to see when the exhibit is coming to a town near you. The idea for a Drones Quilt came from some women in the UK who started the project as a way to memorialize the victims of U.S. combat drones. We believed that there were lots of anti-drone activists in the U.S. who would like to make our own version of a Drones Quilt, and so the idea traveled across the Atlantic. The idea is to collectively create a piece of artwork which connects the names of activists with those killed. The names humanize the victims and point out the connectivity between human beings. Plans for the American version of the quilt include creating educational materials, photographs and information which together with the quilts will create an exhibit which will travel the country, informing and educating the American public.

Protest Against Drones Planned At NSA On May 3rd, 2014

On the occasion of Spring Days of Action against the killer drones the National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance issues this call to action: The National Security Agency is not only violating the 4th Amendment to the US Constitution by taking away the privacy rights of Americans and others around the world, but contributing to the deaths and the maiming of innocents, including children, in the NSA's role supporting the US CIA and US Military drone strikes. The NSA is culpable, and we must nonviolently express our First Amendment rights and responsibilities under international law to oppose the US Government and the Obama Administration's extrajudicial killings carried out in our name and with our tax money. On Saturday, May 3, 2014 we will gather and peacefully assemble at the National Security Agency to hold a public witness against the its role in violations of international law, war crimes, and crimes against peace.

7 Arrested Today At Drone Protest

CREECH AFB, Nevada – After a week of protests, seven anti-drone activists from throughout the country were arrested here early Friday at Creech Air Force Base front gate as they attempted to deliver a letter to the base commander asking for an end to drones. The seven women also had strings of small paper drone replicas, each representing – by name – innocent victims, including children, of the Obama drone warfare program. Other protests during the week included a simulated “Drone Attack on a Wedding Party”; “A Funeral Procession,” with white masks, coffins and a giant Mourning Mother puppet; “ONE NATION UNDER SURVEILLANCE” (illegal spying, domestic & foreign); “Call Congress Day for Drone Transparency,” and “Celebrate Whistleblowers."
