One Man Show Takes On Healthcare System

So, as I was saying, display was really inspired by your own personal experiences. Can you speak to that little bit? Yeah, yeah. I was after graduating from Juilliard, I was traveling around pursuing a career in regional theater, and I was in a relationship with someone who had a lot of medical needs. It of the course of time, I experienced, what it's like to be with someone who has needs like that. And what the experience was like that I've never seen anyone talk about in the news or comment in the movies or on an episode of Gray's Anatomy are the feelings of ambivalence and the darker feelings that people experience when a loved one is in a medical situation. And that medical situation, often you have to go up against the healthcare insurance industry. Is that part of it to? Well, yeah. I mean, and also she's an artist. So she was on and off with insurance and trying to maintain a career in the arts and stuff like that. So that eventually led me to question whether that was a good system or not. And I also had a friend from school was homeless for a while, and he showed up at the stage door of the theater I was performing at and he had some medical problems.

Gruber Challenged On Affordable Care Act Language

Yesterday, we discussed a controversy involving Jonathan Gruber, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist who played a major role the ACA, or “Obamacare.” He told MSNBC recently that “It is unambiguous this is a typo. Literally every single person involved in the crafting of this law has said that it`s a typo, that they had no intention of excluding the federal states.” However, a libertarian group uncovered a video showing Gruber saying quite clearly after the passage of the law that this provision was a quid pro quo device: state exchanges for tax credits. Conservative sites have lit up over the video below showing Gruber essentially describing the very tradeoff identified in Halbig. He told MSNBC recently that “It is unambiguous this is a typo. Indeed, Gruber later signed on amicus briefs supporting the White House interpretation and even joined the counter spin from the White House and denouncing that very interpretation as “nutty.” Gruber responded to critics showing the video below by that “I was speaking off-the-cuff. It was just a mistake.” However, now another response has been raised in which Gruber gave the same interpretation during this presentation. In my view, the point is again to ask why both sides have to denounce each other as nuts or extremists when there are good-faith arguments can be made on both sides.

While Country Goes Forward, NY Goes Backward On Marijuana

The NY Medical Marijuana Patients Cooperative announced Manhattan's oldest marijuana buyer's club was closing due to the passage of the new law named the Compassionate Care Act, the patient's cooperative was known for it's unique blend of harm reduction and medical marijuana. "The NYMMPC was the only dispensary in the nation that counseled its patients on how to use less marijuana. Group members included patients living with: AIDS, cancer, Glaucoma, Bi-polar disorder, PTSD, Krohn's Disease, depression, anxiety, Multiple Sclerosis, and myriad other illnesses. "The new law was written to limit and exclude many care providers. Our policy was to accept any patient who could prove they had any serious disabling illness," said an unnamed spokesperson for the club, "either with a doctor's note or an equivalent."

What they are calling for is not what we need.” In the second half of the show, Dennis sits down with Dr. Margret Flowers. Recently, Dr. Flowers initiated an online petition declaring herself a consciences objector to the Affordable Care Act and asking others to send a message to President Obama that the ACA is a scam. “The most important conversation we should be having right now in the United States is not how many people are insured,” says Dr. Flowers “knowing that insurance is not protective, it’s: do we want to continue to treat healthcare as a commodity where people only get what they can afford, or do we want to join the rest of the industrialized nations in the world and treat healthcare as a public good and create a system where people can get what they need.”

Cardinal Bernardin said, “Health care is an essential safeguard of human life and dignity, and there is an obligation for society to ensure that every person be able to realize this right.” But nearly two decades later, the realization of the “right to health care” remains elusive...The ACA doesn’t change this picture as much as some might think. People who signed up for private coverage in the exchanges are finding they have substantial cost-sharing, i.e. high deductibles and copayments, proven barriers to seeking care. Patients are also finding themselves squeezed into “narrow networks,” which significantly limit their choice of doctors and hospitals. Accidentally step out-of-network, and your costs soar. The sad truth is that for many health insurance is an umbrella that melts in the rain—when you need it most, it isn’t there. ... the business of corporate medicine is doing very well under the ACA. Health insurer profits, stock value, and CEO salaries are all up. In fact, the entire law was written around preserving the gluttonous bottom lines in American health care. The ACA handed private insurers $500 billion in taxpayer subsidies to continue profiteering off illness in our country.
