On this World Day Of Social Justice, Call For ‘No More Silence’

Today is the World Day of Social Justice. You likely didn't know that. For me, every day is this one. Every day I invite Canadians to look at the settler colonial project, alive and well today, to understand its impact on Indigenous peoples, particularly women in this country and worldwide. No More Silence, a grassroots network of Indigenous women and allies, was founded about 10 years ago in Toronto to call attention to the impunity surrounding the ongoing disappearances of Indigenous women in Canada. We have worked hard to break the silence and today "the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women is a part of mainstream media and public consciousness." Unfortunately, this has not led to a decrease in the violence or to concrete measures on the part of the government.

Hundreds March In Vancouver For Missing & Murdered Women

There was grief and outrage on the streets Saturday, as hundreds gathered to remember aboriginal women who have died or gone missing. In Victoria, hundreds of aboriginal women and supporters marched down Government Street to the legislature, coming together to remember their “stolen sisters.” “Our main focus for the [Stolen Sisters] memorial march is that people will be able to come together and honour the women we’ve lost, and give space to community healing,” said organizer Jessica-Dawn Humphries ahead of the event. “We don’t want to forget the lives we’ve lost, but we also want to find solutions for the future.”

A Love Louder Than Rage: The Beautiful Revolution

I remember in the early days of the Idle No More Movement being awe-struck by seeing natives take to the streets and public places with drums, singing and dancing. It was beautiful, cultural, positive, and yet it was bringing attention to some very painful truths. In Idle No More, Hints of a Global Super-Movement I write about this emerging phenomena and close with a video of Ta’Kaiya speaking at a rally when she was only 11. Together we have seen so much growth and evolution since then, it is a very exciting time to participate in our unfolding future. Velcrow Ripper has made enormous contributions with films like Scared Sacred, and Occupy Love that encourage us to bring a spiritual perspective to our work for positive planetary change.

CALLOUT To #ShutDownCanada Friday, February 13th

CALL OUT for communities across Canada to blockade their local railway, port or highway on February 13th. Don’t buy, don’t fly, no work and keep the kids home from school. A diversity of tactics is highly recommended! Get everyone involved” (#ShutDownCanada). The ShutDownCanada callout was made by a group called In Solidarity with all Land Defenders who describe themselves as “a collective of indigenous and settler grassroots organizers/activists based out of so called Vancouver(xʷməθkwəy̓əm(Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) land)”.

Young Navajos Stage 200 Mile Journey For Existence

At dawn on January 6, 2015, a group of young Diné (Navajo) women and their supporters gathered at sunrise near the fire department at the base of Dził Na’oodiłii (Huerfano Mountain). From there the group embarked on a 200-mile trek through eastern New Mexico—a tribute to the 150th anniversary of the tragic “Long Walk.” Throughout this journey they have been raising awareness about the historical and present day challenges faced by Diné people and inspiring hopeful solutions to address these issues. Organizers are calling out for community support in the form of walking, hosting or helping to garner basic materials. This first journey will end at Tsoodził (Mount Taylor), their southern sacred mountain.

Aboriginal Protests Block Two Ontario Highways

CALEDONIA, Ont. - Protesters calling for action on missing and murdered aboriginal women have closed stretches of two highways in Ontario. Provincial police say demonstrators have blocked part of Highway 6 between Caledonia and Hagersville and at the Skyway Bridge on Highway 49 connecting Tyendinaga Territory and Prince Edward County. The protests come on what's billed as a national day of vigil for missing and murdered aboriginal women and girls. Six Nations Men's Fire, which is organizing the planned two-day Highway 6 closure, is calling on the federal government to hold an inquest into the matter.
