Irish Protest Charges For Water

WATER CHARGE PROTESTS continued today with Anti Austerity Alliance representatives staging a demonstration outside Irish Water headquarters earlier today, urging people to send their registration pack back incomplete. Speaking at the protest today, activist Paul Murphy said there is a “revolt” taking place against what he said were “completely bogus” charges. "The vast majority of people have so far not returned the application packs from Irish Water properly filled out. We returned today to Irish Water a wheelie bin of packs which people have given to us in protest against water charges."

Anti-austerity Protesters Occupy Revenue Office In Dublin

A group of six anti-austerity activists are occupying the Revenue Commissioners’ offices in Dublin’s Cathedral Street, off O’Connell Street. The occupation began at about 11.15am today when the five men and one woman began a sit-down protest in the Revenue offices as people dealt with their tax affairs - some making their Local Property Tax payments ahead of the deadline. Gardaí were called to the scene and the offices were closed to the public at about 12.10pm. A spokesman for the group, Ciarán Carr, told The Irish Times the six were “all independent and not members of a political party”. Their “anti-austerity sit-in” was “on behalf of those who can’t pay the property tax”, he said. “We won’t give up the fight no matter how small,” he said.

The History of Boycotts: Ireland, and Justice for Palestine

It entered the English language during the Land War of the 1880s — the struggle across the Irish countryside between impoverished tenant farmers and their often absentee landlords. When Captain Charles Boycott, an agent of a major landowner in County Mayo, sought toevict tenants for non-payment of rent, he was shunned by the local communities: his workers went on strike, local tradespeople refused to deal with him; even the local post office refused to take his mail. So it is fitting that Irish people have undertaken a number of significant boycott campaignsas a means of fighting injustice.

Michael Hudson: Neoliberalism Has Damaged Ireland, Europe

Prof. H: The housing bubble has nothing to do with the corporation tax at all. It has to do with the absence of a land tax on real estate. If the land value was taxed then you would not have had all of this free rental income and the prospect for capital gain that was paid over. I mean this was what Henry George wrote about the Irish land question, back in 1880. Great book, just read Henry George and the Land Question and you’ll get everything you need to know about why Ireland should have had the tax base on the land instead of turning over all the rental income to banks, that then essentially lent it to crooks, or stole it. G: And as you said the land value tax, which is very interesting policy, which was proposed to the new government, Fine Gael, the government that came in afterwards, instead of implementing a land value tax they just implemented a flat property tax which is regressive, and has in no way made any difference. As a result we see another property bubble may be developing at the moment, just like we see occurring in the UK.

Dail Lockout: Irish Say “No” To Austerity On September 18

In response to the complete lack of lack of respect for the Irish people, all the broken political promises, and the utter failure to represent the interests of the Irish people, the people have begun to take matters into their own hands to demand members of the Oiréachtas honour the wishes of those who employ them.. Hence, there will be a peaceful LOCK OUT on SEPTEMBER 18TH outside DAIL EIREANN (both gates). The goal is to remind all TDs and Senators that they are there to do as WE THE PEOPLE of Ireland demand, and not bow down to vested corporate, banking and European interests. The LOCK OUT has been proceeded by letters of warning, telling TDs that they are not required to work on that one day, because we the people are aware that they are not working for US. This is an opportunity for TDs and Senators to show who they stand with and on which side of history they wish to fall.
