People’s Department Of Environmental Justice Serves Eminent Domain

By Douglas Smith and Henry Harris. Randolph, VT - Early this morning, members of the People's Department of Environmental Justice (PDEJ) served notice of eminent domain at the home of VT Public Service Department Commissioner Chris Recchia. Just before 7:00 am PDEJ Members, dressed in hard hats and high visibility vests approached Recchia with a Notice of Eminent Domain. The notice stated, "the land belonging Commissioner Recchia is now under the legal jurisdiction of those most severely impacted by the permitting of the VGS Fracked Gas pipeline project." It continued, "If Recchia will not take any accountability for his role in rubber stamping extreme energy projects that accelerate the climate crisis, exploit first nations communities and harass the public here in Vermont, the People's Department of Environmental Justice will continue ongoing education development projects on this property."

Tribes Organize Against North Dakota Oil Pipeline

By Nicky Woolf for The Guardian. Standing Rock Nation - Dozens of tribal members from several Native American nations took to horseback on Friday to protest against the proposed construction of an oil pipeline which would cross the Missouri river just yards from tribal lands in North Dakota. The group of tribal members, which numbered around 200, according to a tribal spokesman, said they were worried that the Dakota Access Pipeline, proposed by a subsidiary of the Dallas, Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners, would lead to contamination of the river. The proposed route also passes through lands of historical significance to the Standing Rock Lakota Sioux Nation, including burial grounds.

Armed U.S. Marshals Enforce Eminent Domain

By John Zangas of DC Media Group. New Milford, PA - The land of the free got a little smaller this week when cutters from Williams Partners Company began clear-cutting trees on the Zeffer-Holleran property, readying it for construction of the Constitution pipeline. Five acres of the property were condemned under eminent domain to build the natural gas pipeline. A dozen Pennsylvania State police and heavily armed U.S. Marshals escorted scores of tree cutters to remove hundreds of sugar bush maple trees from the property. The Marshals carried AR-15 assault weapons and wore bullet proof vests. But when the cutters began tree removal they encountered trees with U.S. flags activists had painted on them. Activists stood out of the way during the cutting but held large signs spelling “People Not Pipelines.”

Group Sues Feds To Stop Pipeline

By Joe Mahoney for The Daily Star. With the $700 million Constitution Pipeline project held up by New York environmental regulators, the company began clearing the pathway near the project's starting point in Pennsylvania on Friday after getting permission to do so from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Meanwhile, in two separate legal actions, Stop the Pipeline and the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society filed notices in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in the opening volley of civil court challenges to FERC's decision to issue a certificate of necessity to the natural gas transmission project. The opponents had been prevented from mounting a court challenge to the pipeline project until FERC last week denied their formal request for a rehearing on the certification decision issued in December 2014. The new legal challenges were brought against FERC, not the pipeline company. "This is the first step in a long process,"

Protectors Needed In NE Pennsylvania Now!

By Alex Lotorto of Energy Justice Shale Initiative. Landowners in PA were notified by Pat McCluskey (chief landman) via a letter that tree felling will begin on Friday in Susquehanna County. We will need people on Friday morning through the weekend to volunteer. The Holleran property is located at 2131 Three Lakes Road, New Milford, PA, but use these coordinates to find us: 41.8272387, -75.7585062 Parking is up in the field or down by the cabin, so look for "P" signs on either side of the road and follow the arrows. Wear layers and shoes/boots that can get dirty. Bring cameras if you have them. We have been present at 7AM every day since Saturday with little activity beyond Constitution trucks driving by slowly to check us out from the road.

NY Attorney General Objects To Cutting Trees For Pipeline

By Mary Esch for Associated Press - New York's attorney general filed objections Thursday to the Constitution Pipeline Company's request to cut trees along the proposed route of its 124-mile natural gas pipeline, citing the lack of a state water quality permit and pending requests for a rehearing of the federal agency order that cleared the way for the project. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved the pipeline in 2014 with certain conditions, including a water quality permit from the New York state Department of Environmental Conservation. No timetable has been given for a decision on a water permit.

Reversal Of Enbridge’s Line 9B To Begin This Month

By Staff of CBC News - After years of negotiations and months of testing, oil is set to flow west to east again in Enbridge's Line 9B. Starting this month, the flow of the pipeline will be reversed to bring 300,000 barrels of oil a day from Alberta's oil sands to Montreal's refineries. The exact date for the oil to start flowing hasn't been disclosed. Enbridge says it's already pumping oil into the line as scheduled — but it's not actually moving. "And so what we can expect is before the end of the year, in December, first deliveries will be made to our refineries in Montreal and Quebec," said Éric Prud'Homme, a spokesman for Enbridge.

TransCanada Cancels Export Terminal In Quebec

By Lauren Krugel for The Canadian Press - CALGARY — An export terminal in Quebec will no longer be part of the equation for the cross-Canada Energy East Pipeline. The company behind the project, TransCanada Corp., says it's amending its application to the National Energy Board to take the Quebec port out of the project's scope. TransCanada had wanted to connect Alberta crude to two eastern ports, enabling sales to overseas customers — one in Saint John, N.B., and one in Cacouna, Que. In April, TransCanada ditched the Cacouna port proposal because of concerns over beluga whale habitat, but it had spent months scouting out other potential locations along the St. Lawrence River.

In The Pipelines’ Path: Canada’s First Nations Lead Resistance

By Christopher Curtis for Montreal Gazette - He hops over a broken lath fence, landing in the shrubs on the other side of it. As he presses forward, Simon makes a show of quickly ducking, as though some wayward farmer just fired a rifle blast overhead. “We’re trespassing,” says Simon, flashing a mischievous smile. “But the way I see it, this is Mohawk land anyway. If anyone sees us, maybe they’ll freak out and think the natives have come to take back their territory.” In theory, Simon is right. This field, the two-lane highway and nearby Mirabel airport are stretched across a vast plot of land the king of France ceded to Kanesatake’s Mohawks in 1733. For centuries, Simon’s ancestors hunted deer, gathered medicines and buried their dead along the southern banks of the Rivière du Nord.

Pledge To Stop Algonquin Pipeline Expansion

By SANE Energy Project. New York State - Spectra Energy recently received Notice to Proceed for clearcutting trees along the pipeline path of the AIM route in New York just north of New York City. This is the Pipeline that is: Running adjacent to Indian Point Nuclear Facility On top of 2 fault lines Horizontal drilling under our glorious Hudson River or Muhheakantuck "river that flows two ways", the Lenape name 400 feet from an elementary school Just condemned our friends' homes to make way for the expansion. We are beginning a long-term direct action campaign, and training starts soon. If you would like to participate in a direct or support role, please sign this Pledge to Resist, and we will reach out to you.

‘Flatline The Pipeline’ Protest In Roanoke

By Staff of WDBJ7. Roanoke, VA - Dozens gathered in downtown Roanoke to protest pipeline projects in the region. People met at 16 West Market Place for the "Flatline the Pipeline" festival. Protestors who live along the pipeline route spoke out against the pipeline projects. Those in favor of pipelines say they offer energy alternatives and an economic boost. Protesters say they don't want the fracked-gas pipelines in Virginia because they're bad for the environment. "Until that pipeline is in the ground, there's a chance it won't be so I encourage our communities to continue to participate, continue to resist, continue to ask the right questions and continue to fight for our land, our water, for our community," said organizer Elise Keaton.

Hunger Strikers Lay It All On The Line To Stop Gas Pipeline Permits

By Ann Meador and John Zangas in Cetology - Vibrations from the fiddler’s bow ricochet off the hot concrete canyon walls of First Street near Union Station. About a dozen people lounge on sleeping bags and lawn chairs on the sidewalk under a blue awning, sipping salt water. They toss a few bucks into a pot for a wager on who has lost the most weight since their public fast began five days ago. Fifteen pounds dropped since Labor Day wins the prize. It’s come to this. Eighteen days of virtual starvation to draw a line under the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s intransigence, its refusal to do much of anything to address controversy, protest, and mass mobilization against the stream of permits it issues to greenlight gas. In other words, rubberstamp approval for the infrastructure projects it takes to transport fracked gas from the shale fields.

Another Serious Reason To Oppose Gas Pipelines

By Francis Eatherington in Register Guard - With wildfires raging across Oregon, it has become even more urgent for Gov. Kate Brown and U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley to oppose the liquefied natural gas export terminal and pipeline proposed for our state by a Canadian energy company. The Stouts Creek fire, one of the largest current blazes, is affecting at least 17 miles of the route that the Pacific Connector pipeline would take to bring natural gas from Canada and the Rockies to Coos Bay for liquefication and export to Asia. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, an agency that must approve the proposed project and that is closely tied to the oil and gas industry, failed in its draft environmental impact statement to adequately consider the added risks of piping a highly explosive substance through our increasingly fire-prone state.

Mass. Senate Pres. To Hand Deliver Pipeline Testimony In DC

Senate President Stanley Rosenberg, D-Amherst, said Tuesday he will travel to Washington to hand-deliver testimony gathered from Massachusetts residents on Kinder Morgan's proposed Northeast Energy Direct natural gas pipeline. Rosenberg said he will meet with Federal Energy Regulatory Commissioner Cheryl LaFleur on Sept. 30. "I can't think of anyone better to speak with about the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline, the concerns of western Massachusetts residents, and energy policy in general. I certainly appreciate her willingness to meet with me," Rosenberg said in a statement. The public testimony will be that delivered at a Sept. 10 session at Greenfield Community College. Rosenberg organized the public hearing after the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission refused to reschedule its own session concerning the environmental impact of the pipeline.

Breaking: Civil Disobedience At Kerry’s House Over Tar Sands

By Filiberto Nolasco Gomez in Elhuateque.com. Washington, DC - Responding to what they believe to be an illegal backroom deal between John Kerry’s State Department and pipeline company Enbridge activist's have staged at protest at the home of Secretary of State John Kerry. Protesters argue that the pipeline deal would allow the Alberta Clipper tar sands pipeline expansion to proceed without any federal environmental review. Protesters appear to have there arms linked in plastic tubes in order to stage a sit in and risk arrest.
