In the course of two Senate hearings this week, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), faced a long list of questions, ranging from immunization to chronic diseases to the functioning of the United States health system in general. Having observed him spreading vaccine misinformation for years, most senators were prepared for a very long conversation—and that’s exactly what they got. During his marathon testimonies, Kennedy largely struggled to provide definite and clear answers. One of the most concerning moments came when he failed to differentiate between the basic functions and workings of Medicare and Medicaid, two of the most important health programs in the US.

Health professionals fear the damage a second Trump presidency will have on access to healthcare and on the health of marginalized populations. These concerns include leadership of governmental health agencies, access to insurance, and restrictions on reproductive health and gender affirming care. The Palestinians are poor, forgotten and alone. But if you do stand up, it singles you out as someone who puts principles before expediency, who is willing to fight for the wretched of the earth and, if necessary, sacrifice your political future to retain your integrity.

In 2015, Black Agenda Report co-founder Bruce Dixon coined the term “sheepdog” to describe the role that Bernie Sanders would play in the 2016 presidential campaign. Dixon presciently said, “Bernie's job is to warm up the crowd for Hillary, herding activist energies and the disaffected left back into the Democratic fold one more time. Bernie aims to tie up activist energies and resources till the summer of 2016 when the only remaining choice will be the usual lesser of two evils.” The word stuck and since that time the question is rightly asked whether a particular democratic challenger is serious about getting the nomination or is merely a sheepdog who will herd supporters back into the hands of their party’s oligarchy.
