Julian Assange Letter To Actor Who Plays Him In Movie

I believe you are a good person, but I do not believe that this film is a good film. I do not believe it is going to be positive for me or the people I care about. I believe that it is going to be overwhelmingly negative for me and the people I care about. It is based on a deceitful book by someone who has a vendetta against me and my organisation. In other circumstances this vendetta may have gone away, but our conflict with the United States government and the establishment press has created a patronage and commissioning market – powerful, if unpopular – for works and comments that are harmful to us. There are dozens of positive books about WikiLeaks, but Dreamworks decided to base its script only on the most toxic. So toxic is the first book selected by Dreamworks that it is distributed to US military bases as a mechanism to discourage military personnel from communicating with us. Its author is publicly known to be involved in the Dreamworks production in an ongoing capacity.

The Unsung Hero of the NSA Revelations

After Edward Snowden came forward as the source behind the release of the NSA classified documents and the Obama Administration’s aggressive international manhunt began, Harrison, a 31 year old British native emerged on the world stage as the mysterious woman who accompanied this high profile whistleblower in his quest for asylum. On June 23, WikiLeaks published her profile on its website. It described Harrison as a journalist and legal researcher who worked as section editor for WikiLeaks and as an investigative researcher for The Bureau of Investigative Journalism and the Centre for Investigative Journalism.

Daniel Ellsberg: Whistle-Blowers Are Good For Democracy

The same is true for Manning. He didn’t put out anything over-secret, and he selected, actually, a body of secret cables that he determined did not even include restrictions on distribution, like “no dis” [no distribution] or “lim dis” [limited distribution]. ...I was surprised to see that there was so much incriminating information at that level that was merely secret. . Apparently, it has gotten so routine to report war crimes, like turning people over to be tortured by the Iraqi authorities and so inconsequential that they are in fact keeping a body count of civilian deaths, which the army had denied keeping. That figure was as high as it was for the army’s secret accounts, 60,000, even though that is probably far less than a tenth of the actual civilian casualties. Still, it’s 60,000 more than they had reported to the public. In short, he had reason to believe that there was nothing in there that would be more than embarrassing to the United States government, and so it has proved.

Secrets Result in Abuse of Power: New Era of Transparency

The importance of Chelsea Manning's actions to increase transparency in US foreign policy was underscored by the timing of her extreme 35-year sentence. In the same week, the CIA admitted after 60 years that it engineered a coup d'état against the elected prime minister of Iran, Mohammad Mossadegh, in 1953. This secret US and British action changed the course of history, planting the seeds for many of the problems the region and world face today. The Mossadegh coup became the model for secret government action by the United States, often carried out by the CIA. Author and historian William Blum lists dozens of instances of the United States attempting or succeeding in overthrowing foreign, often democratic, governments. He says "The United States has overthrown more democratically-elected governments than any country in world history."

Why Did Wikileaks Post All Its Secrets to Facebook?

WikiLeaks abruptly released the files and asked the public to mirror them-on Facebook and Twitter, no less, hardly the place you go to drop off highly classified intelligence. With nothing better to go on, the Internet has decided that "insurance" may be code for "back off" to the U.S. government-coming just before the sentencing of WikiLeaks cause célèbre Bradley Manning. File encryption means that the data is hidden and no one can see what's in the shared files without a key to unlock them-which, of course, hasn't been publicly released. The size of one of the files is 349 gigabytes, which means that there's either A) enough textual data inside to power a nationwide security crisis for the next 300 years or so, or B) a few very incriminating pieces of video footage.

Repeal The Espionage Act To Protect Journalists & Whistleblowers

"You don't have to think that Edward Snowden or Bradley Manning or John Kiriakou are heroes (for the record, I do think that they are heroes - and patriots, Mr. President - but if you don't, I still want to recruit you for reform) to say that these men should not have been, and should not be, charged as foreign spies, nor threatened with being so charged. To treat government employees - or government contractors - who leak classified information to the media in the public interest as foreign spies is a deep stain on our democracy."

The Whistleblowers At The Frontier Of Digital Liberation

Computer scientist Nadia Heninger has argued that leaking information is now becoming the “civil disobedience of our age”. The late historian and activist Howard Zinn described the act of civil disobedience as “the deliberate, discriminate, violation of law for a vital social purpose”. He advocated it saying that such an act “becomes not only justifiable but necessary when a fundamental human right is at stake and when legal channels are inadequate for securing that right”. Snowden’s act was clearly one of civil disobedience. John Lewis, US Representative and veteran civil rights leader recently noted that Snowden was “continuing the tradition of civil disobedience by revealing details of classified US surveillance programs”.

War On Journalism–FBI Targets Journalist Connected To Wikileaks

The investigation into WikiLeaks has prompted little concern among mainstream US journalists. This might be because WikiLeaks doesn't produce the same style of journalism, or because reporters can reassure themselves, rightly or wrongly, that the investigation centers on trying to uncover any inappropriate dealings with sources, or involvement in hacking. Such reassurances are false. What happens to WikiLeaks today happens to New York Times reporters tomorrow.

Assange Says NSA Reforms a ‘Victory of Sorts’ for Edward Snowden

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has called President Barack Obama's announcement of plans to limit sweeping US government surveillance programmes a "victory of sorts" for fugitive former spy agency contractor Edward Snowden. "Today, the President of the United States validated Edward Snowden's role as a whistleblower by announcing plans to reform America's global surveillance program," Assange said in a statement on Saturday referring to Obama's announcement a day earlier. "Today was a victory of sorts for Edward Snowden and his many supporters," Assange said in the statement, which was posted on the WikiLeaks website.

Video: Cornel West and Chris Hedges Discuss Bradley Manning Verdict

Army whistleblower Bradley Manning was acquitted of 'Aiding the enemy,' on July 30, 2013, while convicted of 20 other charges. On August 4 Cornel West was joined by former NYT correspondent Chris Hedges and members of the Bradley Manning Support Network for a discussion of the threat to whistleblowers and government transparency posed by Bradley Manning's trial. Visit www.bradleymanning.org for more information. The event took place at the Friends Meeting of Washington D.C. Next week at Ft. Meade the defense team will call twenty-four witnesses to the stand for incredible testimony regarding Bradley's exceptional character. If you can make it to the trial, this is a great time to attend.

FBI Used ‘Baby-Faced’ Teenager to Spy on, Frame Julian Assange

In an extraordinary sequence of events, Icelandic teenager Sigurdur Thordarson went from accompanying Assange to court hearings in London to secretly passing troves of data on WikiLeaks staff and affiliated activists to the FBI. The now 20-year-old Icelandic citizen’s account is partly corroborated by authorities in Iceland, who have confirmed that he was at the center of a diplomatic row in 2011 when a handful of FBI agents flew in to the country to meet with him—but were subsequently asked to leave after a government minister suspected they were trying to “frame” Assange.

Why Was Court Sketch Artist & WikiLeaks Truck Driver Banned From Court?

The courtroom sketch artist and activist, who had been driving the WikiLeaks Truck on to Fort Meade just about every day of court proceedings in Bradley Manning’s court martial, was banned from the military base on July 26. It was the day of the defense’s closing argument and Clark Stoeckley did not want to upstage the defense by trying to grab headlines with his side of the story on what happened, but that day Stoeckley was escorted after being told he was banned by the garrison commander because he had sent out what had been perceived as threatening tweets. Stoeckley described how he had walked back into the courtroom when a paralegal officer pulled him aside and walked to a location near the courtroom, where had never been before. Essentially, he said it was where Manning goes every time he is taken out of court. The paralegal officer told him he had been banned from the trial and was losing his credentials.

Assange: Journalism Is Now Espionage

Bradley Manning’s alleged disclosures have exposed war crimes, sparked revolutions, and induced democratic reform. He is the quintessential whistleblower. This is the first ever espionage conviction against a whistleblower. It is a dangerous precedent and an example of national security extremism. It is a short sighted judgment that can not be tolerated and must be reversed. It can never be that conveying true information to the public is ’espionage’. In 2008 presidential candidate Barack Obama ran on a platform that praised whistleblowing as an act of courage and patriotism. That platform has been comprehensively betrayed. His campaign document described whistleblowers as watchdogs when government abuses its authority. It was removed from the internet last week.

Fort Meade Cops Pull Over Wikileaks Truck for Disseminating “Top Secret Info”

Who knew that the WikiLeaks Truck was chock full of Top Secret Info?... just like it says in bold lettering on the side! Clark Stoeckley was pulled over this evening while driving the WikiLeaks Truck–no connection to media group WikiLeaks–after a long day at Fort Meade covering whistleblower Bradley Manning’s trial. Stoeckley is a cartoonist who has published a book about Manning’s pre-trial hearings.
