2016 Elections

What Happened — And What Now?

By Staff of Moyers and Company - Perspectives to carry us into an unsettling new world. Following Trump’s victory last Tuesday, we reached out to writers, activists and experts we trust with two questions: “What happened?” and “What now?” This post highlights some of what they had to say. Click “read more” to read their full responses.

Long Death March Of Dismal Dollar Democrats

By Paul Street for CounterPunch. The bigger if related problem is the long rightward, neoliberal drift of the Democratic Party further away from any last commitments to social justice, democracy, peace, and environmental sustainability. Trump may be appalling and dangerous on numerous levels, but he wasn’t wrong when he pointed out (in his usual clumsy manner) that the Clintons and other Wall Street-captive Democrats sold the nation’s “forgotten” blue collar working people down the river in the name of “free trade.” The co-presidential Clintons’ advance of the North American Free Trade Agreement – a disaster for the U.S. working class – and Barack Obama’s championing of the arch-authoritarian and global-corporatist Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) speak volumes about neoliberal-era Democrats’ service to the nation’s covertly reigning Deep State Few over and against the Many and the common good.

International Multiracial Working Class To Trump: Waking Up A Sleeping Giant

By Staff of Popular Resistance - Trump coming into office is a road out of other roads not taken. As a result, the veil has been lifted from more and more of us who have been made to live in fear and anxiety. It has taken us out from living our lives through snapchat or Love and Hip Hop in order to confront real life. It has impacted those of us who perhaps deep down inside would have been a little relieved if Hillary Clinton got elected. This road has disrupted the enchantment of somehow feeling accomplished for doing the most in terms of political contribution via voting when actually that should be the least.

Another Election Loser: Corporate Media

By Ari Paul for FAIR - Liberals had a good laugh this summer when CNN’s Brianna Keilar (8/17/16) insisted to Donald Trump campaign lawyer Michael Cohen that his team was “down” in the race. “Says who?” he asked. Keilar snarked back: “Polls. Most of them. All of them?” At the time, it was the sickest of all burns. As the polls kept forecasting a clear win for Hillary Clinton, Trump fans went back and forth between complaining about a rigged system and accusing the polls of being dishonest.

Hillary Clinton Delivers Painful Concession Speech

By Stephen Collinson, Dan Merica and Jeff Zeleny for CNN - With those simple words, Hillary Clinton, who thought she would wake up Wednesday as the first woman president-elect but crashed to a stunning election defeat to Donald Trump, ended her White House quest and likely her political career. The Democratic nominee unequivocally conceded the presidential race, and said that the Constitution requires a peaceful transfer of power.

US Election Campaign Reveals Mass Alienation From Two-Party System

By Patrick Martin for WSWS - A New York Times/CBS poll published Thursday documents the disgust of the American people with the 2016 election campaign and their alienation from the two major corporate-controlled parties. By a margin of 82 percent to 13 percent, better than six to one, those polled said the campaigns of both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have filled them with revulsion. According to the Times account, “With more than eight in ten voters saying the campaign has left them repulsed rather than excited, the rising toxicity threatens the ultimate victor.

Why Trump Won; Why Clinton Lost

By Robert Parry for Consortium News - In the end, Hillary Clinton became the face of a corrupt, arrogant and out-of-touch Establishment, while Donald Trump emerged as an almost perfectly imperfect vessel for a populist fury that had bubbled beneath the surface of America. There is clearly much to fear from a Trump presidency, especially coupled with continued Republican control of Congress. Trump and many Republicans have denied the reality of climate change

Trump: Who Really Knows?

By Bruce K. Gagnon for Organizing Notes - It was a late night at our house. It would be an understatement to say I was surprised that Trump pulled off a massive victory in the election. I surely didn't see this coming. I figured that with the mainstream media support for Clinton and the support from the banksters, the neo-cons, the military industrial complex and the oil companies it was a certainty that Trump would go down to defeat.

Who Won In 2016? Big Money

By Jim Hightower for Other Worlds - In one of Agatha Christie’s murder mysteries, the key clue that solved the whodunit wasn’t something that happened, but something that didn’t — specifically, a dog that didn’t bark. That plot fits one of the great mysteries of this year’s Trump-Clinton race for president: There was no barking at the democracy-murdering power of big corporate money in our politics.

A Post-Election Message From Richard Wolff

By Richard D. Wolff for Democracy at Work - Trump rode workers’ anger at capitalism’s last 40 years: record profits from lost jobs, incomes, security and public services. For change, they voted down GOP and Dem establishments. But the system won’t let Trump bring change. There lies our opportunity. The endless election effort is finally over (even as the next one begins to be planned by the candidates and their monied supporters).

Plight Of Palestine A Total Non-Issue This Election?

By Vijay Prashad for AlterNet - In 2006, Hillary Clinton sat down with the editorial board of the Jewish Press. Asked about the elections in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Clinton said that she was unhappy with the result because Hamas came out as the winner. "I do not think we should have pushed for an election in the Palestinian territories," she says in a tape recording released a few days ago. "I think that was a big mistake." Clinton wanted Fatah, the more reliable partner, to win, not Hamas, whom the US considered a terrorist organization.

At Lincoln Memorial Rally, Progressives Vow To Fight Rigged Elections

By John Zangas for DC Media Group - Political groups Unity for Democracy and the New Progressives held a day-long rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday to draw attention to what they are calling is a rigged election system centered on moneyed interests and deaf to voters’ concerns. Several hundred joined in a “Take Back Democracy March” which kicked off the event. After walking to the White House, they returned to the Lincoln Memorial

Yes, Our Elections Are Rigged

By Mark Dunlea for Green Papers - We will never have an accurate vote count on election day as long as we leave the counting (and administration) to the two major parties, who throughout our history have repeatedly stolen votes to benefit those in power. Robert Caro, the Pulitzer-prize winning biographer of President Johnson, wrote about how LBJ got elected to the US Senate after he realized that he had allowed the Republicans to do a better job of vote theft in his first run

Hillary Clinton, The Democratic Party Plantation

By Solomon Comissiong for The Black Agenda Report - The Democrats and Republicans are both proven evils. “Donald Trump is a devoted racist and xenophobe and Hillary Clinton is an imperialist who has a track record of destroying human life.” Now if the time for Black people to “take possession of the politics within our communities and put forth our own revolutionary candidates who represent our collective interests.”

Extremist Militias Recruiting In Fear Of Clinton Winning Election

By Jason Wilson for The Guardian - Extremist surge got national attention during the Oregon militia standoff and has continued to rise with Trump, with his legitimization of white nationalist politics. In the past 12 months, Jessica Campbell has had her car’s fuel line cut and its wheel nuts loosened. Late last year, she had a GPS tracker surreptitiously attached to her vehicle. She is now accustomed to being tailed by unfamiliar vehicles on Interstate 5 near her home in Cottage Grove, just outside Eugene,Oregon.
