31 Protesters Arrested Outside Krome Detention Center, ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

West Miami-Dade, Florida - Hours after over two dozen activists were arrested outside Krome Detention Center, some of those arrestees bonded out of jail. 7News cameras captured a dozen young people wearing “ICE kidnapped my neighbor” T-shirts making their way out of the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Facility in Northwest Miami-Dade on Sunday morning. The protesters walked out of jail after Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 31 people, most of them with the Sunrise Movement, as they protested what they said were the cruel deportation practices of the Trump administration.

Iced Out

An Indigenous nation of fewer than 1,000 people in South Florida, the Miccosukee Tribe doesn’t often get involved in local politics. But then private contractors showed up to an abandoned airport and started erecting a detention center in the middle of the Everglades. The Miccosukee leapt into action, realizing that the behemoth structure would drastically change the fragile wetlands that they call home. It didn’t take long for the so-called Alligator Alcatraz to also develop a reputation for egregious human rights abuses. Billed as an immigration detention center for the “most dangerous criminals,” reports started quickly circulating that detainees were experiencing medical neglect and didn’t have access to basic hygiene.

Judge Rules Shut Down Of Everglade’s Detention Camp After Protests

Miami, FL – The Miccosukee Tribe and Friends of the Everglades won their lawsuit to shut down the detention camp known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” as ruled by U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams on Thursday, August 21. The lawsuit was filed on June 27, and Judge Williams ordered a temporary stop to the construction on the site two weeks ago. Now, the state has 60 days to move the detainees and dismantle what’s been constructed so far. The lawsuit was brought to the courts on the grounds of environmental damage caused by the facility to the fragile Everglades ecosystem. Twenty acres of land have been paved over with asphalt for the facility’s operations.

American Gulag: Alcatraz And Its Offspring

As if we needed more examples of the incompetence and insanity of the current federal regime, along comes their obsession with Alcatraz, in both the nominal and the actual sense.  They have been looking at the historic San Francisco Bay island prison, now a museum, with the idea in mind of renovating it and reopening it as an active prison.  This foolishness is on the heels of opening a new prison facility in the swamps of Florida that they have christened, with great pleasure, “Alligator Alcatraz.”  Both ideas come from the diseased tyrannical minds exercising destructive control over the whole country and assaulting what little remains of morality.

It’s Time To Join The Fight Against ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

The Miccosukee Tribe has lived in Florida’s Big Cypress National Preserve since time immemorial. Today, 640 tribal members still call the Everglades home. Their ancestral home now has an unwanted neighbor: a massive immigrant detention center that sits less than 1,000 feet from Miccosukee villages. It was hurriedly built by the state with encouragement and promised funding from the Trump administration. Both ignored a basic requirement — consulting the tribe about building on their ancestral land. This isn't the first time officials have planned grandiose development in the Everglades without consulting the tribe.

Concentration Camps Are Back; Why Does That Not Bother Anyone?

Israel has soft-launched its concentration camp in Rafah, and Donald Trump has hard-launched Alligator Alcatraz, while other countries look the other way. Israel has made it clear that anyone who does not make their way to the new concentration camp, on what used to be Rafah city, will become a legitimate target for elimination. Just to be clear, though. At no point so far has Israel needed a legitimate justification for eliminating anyone. They have done what they want, to whom they want, from the start. Israel could not have made their intentions clearer – ethnic cleansing. And still, Western Government are supporting it – providing weapons and support and pretending they don’t see the long list of war crimes because little Netanyahu might throw a temper tantrum.

Fight Against ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Unites Immigrant, Environmental, And Indigenous Movements

The first arrivals to Trump’s new controversial ICE detention facility, dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” by Republican politicians for its location in the Florida wilderness, were set to arrive late on Wednesday, July 2. Since Trump came into office for the second time in January, his administration has been scrambling to meet the necessary benchmarks to fulfill Trump’s campaign promise to deport between 15 to 20 million people. The newly-opened detention center is part of Trump’s latest bid to escalate his regime of mass deportations, beginning to accept prisoners a month after the Trump administration raised the quota of immigration arrests to 3,000 per day. The facility is set to open with 3,000 beds ready, with plans to expand to up to 5,000.
