Miscarriage Of Justice Catalyzed A Movement Led By Asian Americans

Vincent Chin was beaten to death in Detroit in June 1982, by two white auto workers who reportedly said it was because of him that they had lost their jobs. At the time, listeners may recall, Japan was being widely blamed for the collapse of the Detroit auto industry. Chin was Chinese-American. Elite media, as reflected by the New York Times, didn’t seem to come around to the story until April 1983, with reporting on the protests emanating from Detroit’s Asian-American community about the dismissive legal response to the murder.

Case Factory Workers Strike For Higher Wages, COVID-19 Protections

Racine, Wisconsin - CNH Industrial employees in Racine represented by the United Auto Workers labor union have been on strike for almost a full work week. A local union representative said they're fighting for higher wages and better COVID-19 protections. Members of UAW Local 180 bundled up as they picketed Thursday outside the CNH plant where Case tractors are made. A collective bargaining agreement between the union and the company lapsed at noon on Monday. According to the UAW, more than 1,000 members are on strike at CNH locations in Racine and Burlington, Iowa. Richard Glowacki, chairman of the union's bargaining committee and president of the UAW CNH Council, said spirits are high.

Auto Workers To Vote On Direct Elections For Officers

United Auto Workers members will soon vote in an unprecedented referendum to decide whether the union’s 400,000 working members and nearly 600,000 retirees will directly elect their top officers. Ballots hit the mail October 19 and are due back November 29.
