I Am On The Refugee Caravan And Saw The Tear Gas Attack

On Sunday, the United States fired tear gas on asylum seekers—including children—at the San Ysidro crossing between San Diego and Tijuana. In the days since, the Trump administration has doubled down on its violent stance on the southern border. President Trump has smeared the refugees as “stone cold criminals,” while Customs and Border Patrol Commissioner Kevin McAleenan hit the media circuit to defend the attack. On Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen made the outrageous—and baseless—assertion that children are being used by refugees as “human shields,” echoing rhetoric used to justify Israeli attacks on Palestinians.

What Border Security And Police Violence Have In Common

The photo of Esequiel Hernández Jr. circulated in the media shows a typical high school sophomore in a white cowboy hat, with a smile that goes all the way to his eyes. It was from his yearbook from 1997—the year a camouflaged Marine shot the 18-year-old near his home in the small border town of Redford, Texas. The Marines were a part of an anti-drug push overseen by President Bill Clinton, although news reports place them at the border as far back as the 1980s. Hernández, a U.S. citizen, has been herding his father’s goats.

Tucson Demonstrators Wheatpaste In Intersection After Second Border Patrol Agent Not Guilty Verdict

On Wednesday, November 21st, a jury in Tucson, Arizona found Border Patrol agent Lonnie Swartz not guilty of involuntary manslaughter for his 2012 shooting of 16 year old José Antonio Elena Rodríguez. Though Lonnie Swartz’s killing of José Antonio is only one among many murders committed by Border Patrol, the particularly egregious nature of the shooting made it the first time in history that a BP agent has faced criminal charges after killing someone. Swartz shot through the border wall from Nogales, Arizona into Nogales, Sonora, hitting the unarmed teenager ten times in the back and killing him instantly. A previous trial had already found Swartz not guilty for second-degree murder, but could not come to a decision on manslaughter charges...

US Border Patrol Agents Prone To Corruption

Toward the end of September, Ramon Antonio Monreal Rodriguez obtained $650,000 worth of cocaine from smugglers along the Arizona border. The 32-year-old Tucsonian made two exchanges of drugs and money over the course of two nights, and ensured 41 kilos of coke got into the US from Mexico without any problems. Monreal and the traffickers met up at a prearranged spot in a patch of desert near the San Gabriel Gate. Monreal knew the area well. After all, he had been working in the vicinity since he joined the US Border Patrol a decade earlier. The FBI, which had Monreal under surveillance, arrested him on Sept. 25; Monreal resigned from his role as an agent later that day.

Rocks Are Not Guns: #AskJoseAntonio

Tucson, AZ - President Donald Trump said members of the U.S. military sent to the southern border to keep out thousands in a migrant caravan would "fight back" and “anybody throwing rocks or stones at the military service members will be considered to be using a firearm.” His statements Thursday November 1 are unfolding amidst the courtroom proceedings of the second federal trial of a border patrol officer Lonnie Swartz who shot into Mexico through the border wall in Nogales, Arizona/Sonora, killing 16-year old Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez on October 10, 2012.
