4 Signs We’re Winning The Battle Against Monsanto

By Katherine Paul for Nation of Change - Next month will mark one year since Congress obliterated Vermont’s GMO labeling law and replaced it with its own faux-labeling measure. The DARK Act was an outright attack on consumer and states’ rights. Still, then-President Obama refused to veto it. We lost the right to labels on GMO foods. But we never lost our determination to expose Monsanto’s corrupt manipulation of government agencies, or the truth about just how harmful Roundup herbicide is to humans and the environment. Fast forward to today. Monsanto is facing down scores of lawsuits by people, or their families, who were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma after being exposed to Roundup. Those lawsuits have led to revelations about possible collusion between Monsanto employees and former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials to bury evidence of Roundup’s carcinogenicity. Meanwhile the EPA, perhaps fearing consumer backlash, refuses to rule on whether to renew the license for glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup), even though we’re now nearly two years past the deadline.

Judge Blocks Monsanto’s Bid To Stop California From Listing Glyphosate As Carcinogenic

By Lorraine Chow for Eco Watch - In its lawsuit, Monsanto claimed that the listing was unconstitutional because the OEHHA delegated law-making authority "to an unelected and non-transparent foreign body that is not under the oversight or control of any federal or state government entity." However, California lawyers argued in its motion to dismiss the lawsuit that the IARC's scientific determinations are "the gold standard in carcinogen identification." According to the Associated Press, Judge Kapetan will issue a formal decision soon. OEHHA spokesman Sam Delson told the AP that state regulators are waiting for the judge's formal decision before moving forward with the warning labels.

EPA Poised To Sign Off On Monsanto’s Glyphosate

By Alexis Baden-Mayer for Organic Consumers Association - A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advisory panel is meeting this week (December 13-16) to determine the fate of glyphosate, the main active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. Will the panel heed the warnings of independent scientists? Or will it give more credence to the testimony (propaganda) delivered by Monsanto, the company that annually sells nearly $5 billion worth of its flagship herbicide, Roundup, grossing nearly $2 billion in profits. You can listen to the EPA meeting on glyphosate and cancer December 13-16.

Glyphosate Found In Lowa Honey

By Carey Gillam for Nation of Change - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began glyphosate residue testing in a small number of foods earlier this year after the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen in March 2015. The “special assignment,” as the FDA refers to the testing project, is the first time the FDA has ever looked for glyphosate residues in food, though it annually tests foods for numerous other pesticides.

San Francisco Lab Launches New Era Of Glyphosate Testing In Food

By Staff of Sustainable Pulse - Anresco Laboratories in San Francisco has launched unique low detection testing program for glyphosate residues in final food products and soil samples from all over the World. The unique glyphosate testing, which uses a regulatory recognized LC/MS/MS method, is available to both NGOs and commercial companies. Anresco Laboratories, working in coordination with The Detox Project, has started a new era of transparent, accurate and affordable glyphosate testing, which enables consumers to find out the truth about the levels of glyphosate in their food.

GMO Study Shows Massive Environmental Damage In US

By Staff for Sustainable Pulse. According to new research from University of Virginia in the U.S., widespread adoption of genetically modified (GM) crops has decreased the use of insecticides, but increased the use of weed-killing herbicides as weeds become more resistant, leading to serious environmental damage. Ciliberto attributes this increase to the proliferation of glyphosate-resistant weeds. Commentators and other peer-reviewed studies have even stated that the rise in pesticide use on GM crops has gone up much further since the 1998-2011 data that was reviewed in this new University of Virginia study. The period from 2011-2016 is when glyphosate-resistant weeds have become a major economic problem for U.S. farmers based on the increase of use and thus money spent on pesticides cutting in to their bottom line. “In the beginning, there was a reduction in herbicide use, but over time the use of chemicals increased because farmers were having to add new chemicals as weeds developed a resistance to glyphosate,” Ciliberto said.

Study Shows Concern For Glyphosate Damage To Freshwater Systems

By Staff of Sustainable Pulse - A newly published peer-reviewed study from Brazil has found that even legal levels of glyphosate-based herbicides have an impact on a common freshwater algae’s photosynthesis, dark respiration and chlorophyll levels, leading to global concerns over damage to freshwater aquatic systems. An article in the current issue of the journal Phycologia looks at the Brazilian study that examined the effects of glyphosate-based herbicides on a type of green macroalga that is common in streams around the world.

Italian Health Ministry Puts Strict Restrictions On Glyphosate Herbicides

By Staff of Sustainable Pulse - NGOs across Europe have enthusiastically applauded the decision by Italy’s Ministry of Health on Friday to place a number of restrictions on the use of the probable carcinogen Glyphosate, one of the world’s most ubiquitous pesticides. Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe stated that the Italian restrictions ban the use of Glyphosate in areas frequented by the public or by “vulnerable groups” including children and the elderly.

VIDEO: Glyphosate – Molecules, Maps And Moms

By Billy Talen. Over 13.42 billion pounds of Glyphosate have been sprayed on our planet in the past decade. Glyphosate use has risen exponentially since the introduction of genetically modified crops. The EPA is holding a public hearing on glyphosate on October 18th. We want to present our map as evidence. Scientific studies show that Glyphosate is carcinogenic and toxic. Glyphosate is persistent in our blood, bodies, soil and water. It is in our breast milk and most organic foods. It is ubiquitous. Glyphosate has been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, birth defects, celiac disease, allergies and asthma. It only costs one dollar to reveal one public place that has been sprayed with our tax dollars. One dollar includes paying for the public record, scanning, entering, uploading and placing one skull and crossbones on our map.

Glyphosate Herbicides Cause Tragic Phosphorus Poisoning Of Lake Erie

By Laura Barrera for No-Till Farmer - A new study by experts from Ohio Northern University in the U.S. has shown that glyphosate herbicides are a main cause of the tragic phosphorus poisoning of Lake Erie, which has been causing an increase of harmful algae blooms that foul drinking water and kill fish. The study follows a joint agreement by the U.S. and Canadian governments earlier in 2016 to seek a 40% reduction in phosphorus runoff into sections of Lake Erie plagued by the harmful algae blooms.

European Commission Approves Glyphosate For 18 Months

By Lorraine Chow for Eco Watch - Crop Protection Association CEO Nick von Westenholz said he was disappointed that EU member states “forced the commission into this position by ignoring the science and advice of expert regulators.” “The indecision of Member States and the need for an extension demonstrates how politicized this process has become,” he said. “Nevertheless, it will be a relief to farmers that they will be able to continue to use this crucial tool, at least in the short-term.” He added that the standard 15 year renewal should have been granted and urges the member states “to take the sensible, science led decision to re-licence this safe, efficient and effective product for the full 15 year period once the 18 month extension has expired.”

EU Appeals Committee Says No To Glyphosate Re-License

By Staff of Sustainable Pulse - The European Union Appeals Committee has failed to reach agreement over the re-licensing of the World’s most used herbicide, glyphosate, with France and Malta voting against the re-approval and seven other countries abstaining including Germany, Italy, Portugal, Austria, Luxembourg, Greece and Bulgaria. “The Commission regrets that no decision could be taken by the member states, in spite of its efforts over recent weeks to accommodate requests and concerns,” a spokeswoman for the European Commission said.

Monsanto, America’s Monster

By Staff of Media Roots - Last month, the University of San Francisco made an alarming discovery, that 93% of Americans tested had traces of a chemical called glyphosate in their urine. Last year, the World Health Organization deemed glyphosate a “possible carcinogen”. Glyphosate is the main ingredient in biotech giant Monsanto’s flagship product: Roundup, an herbicide sprayed all over almost every acre of food grown. Not only has Roundup been dumped around the world more than any other weed killer in history, but the US is its largest customer.

Has Monsanto Poisoned Most People In The United States

By Staff of The Detox Project - Glyphosate, the most used herbicide in the World, has been found in the urine of 93% of the American public during a unique testing project that started in 2015. Glyphosate, labeled a ‘Probable human carcinogen’ by the World Health Organization’s cancer agency IARC in 2015, has now been revealed to be ubiquitous in the first ever comprehensive and validated LC/MS/MS testing project to be carried out across America.

Glyphosate Report Raises Questions Over EPA’s Ties To Monsanto

By Lorraine Chow for Eco Watch - The House Science, Space and Technology Committee is questioning why the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) posted and then suddenly pulled its highly anticipated risk assessment of glyphosate, the main ingredient in weedkillers such as Monsanto’s flagship herbicide Roundup. On April 29, the EPA’s Cancer Assessment Review Committee published a report online about glyphosate concluding that the chemical is not likely carcinogenic to humans. However, even though it was marked “Final” and was signed by 13 members of CARC, the report disappeared from the website three days later.
