Property Owners Spoil Dominion’s Party In Richmond

By Staff of Americans for Personal Property, Energy, & Landowners - Representatives of energy giant Dominion Resources were caught off guard this week by landowners outraged over the company’s threatened use of eminent domain in the construction of the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP). Bruce McKay, ‎Senior Energy Policy Director of Dominion, struggled to explain the utility’s position to an increasingly skeptical audience during a panel at the Republican Party of Virginia Advance in Richmond Dec. 10. Dominion thought they had the deck stacked in their favor. They didn’t expect Virginia property owners directly affected by the pipeline to show up, advocating for their rights.

International Implications Of Trudeau’s Kinder Morgan Pipeline Approval

By Kevin Grandia for Desmog Blog - Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau's decision this week to approve a major expansion of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline has negative implications that go well beyond the borders of the Great White North. Canada is currently the largest supplier of oil to the United States. We export more oil to the US than Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Mexico combined. We are a secure, stable and reliable trading partner with the US for a product that can make or break their economy. Right now, Canada has almost zero ability to transport its oil to anywhere other than the United States.

Chronicle Of Veterans At Standing Rock

By Susan Abulhawa, via Ian Greenhalgh of Veterans Today. North Dakota - At Standing Rock, so much was not what it seemed from the distance of news headlines and reports. Up close, one could see the ideological tension in romanticized groups where some are driven by moral imperatives and others by personal glory. A hidden truth about the rank and file of the U.S. military was also laid bare. There are many untold contradictions behind the drama that unfolded at Standing Rock. Although this remains a people’s struggle against the capitalist interests of a corporate military state, there are moral inconsistencies that bear telling.

Next Standing Rock: Fossil Fuel Battles Loom Across North America

By Natasha Geiling for Think Progress - When news broke Sunday that the Army Corps of Engineers would not grant a permit necessary for the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline to cross the Missouri River, the thousands of water protectors, environmental activists, and concerned citizens who spent months protesting the pipeline’s construction erupted in celebration. “They formed a circle — a human circle all the way around the camp — and people were holding hands and singing and praying,” Kandi Mossett, a leader with the Indigenous Environmental Network, said via a Facebook Live video following Sunday’s announcement.

Lockdown At Spectra AIM Construction Site At Hudson River Crossing

By Anne Meador for DC Media Group - Spectra commenced destruction after the 12 were taken and now is currently hammering IN the pipeline (as opposed to pulling it through) according to video of a neighbor in Verplanck which we think sounds like they are having problems. Please pray their problems continue. The 12 are now being transferred to an arraignment and the District Attorney is asking for $50,000 bail for each person. We will keep you posted after this special nighttime arraignment, which is going to be the same judge that just found the Montrose9 guilty. Please, if you are in the area, meet us at the courthouse at 1 Heady St in Cortlandt Manor, NY.

Pipeline Spill Contaminates Local Water Just 200 Miles From Standing Rock

By Alexandra Jacobo for Nation of Change - Just 200 miles from Cannon Ball, North Dakota, where water protectors have been preventing the completion of the Dakota Access pipeline, a different North Dakota pipeline has leaked, poisoning nearby water. The pipeline, a six-inch crude oil pipeline operated by the Belle Fourche Pipeline Company, was shut down after the leak was discovered on Monday, but the threat to local drinking water and the surrounding environment remain. The spill caused oil to leak into the Ash Coulee Creek in Billings County. The amount of oil that was spilled is currently unknown, but is “significant” according to Bill Suess...

North Dakota’s Oil Spill Record: 85 Pipeline Accidents In 20 Years

By David Kirby for Take Part - Environmentalists who oppose the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline have a message for the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the incoming Trump administration: When it comes to pumping oil across North Dakota, past is prologue, and that’s bad news for human health and the environment. An analysis released Wednesday by the Center for Biological Diversity found that pipelines in North Dakota have spilled crude oil and other hazardous liquids at least 85 times since 1996. Those spills—an average of four a year—caused more than $40 million in property damage, the center said, citing data from the United States Department of Transportation.

Standing Rock: Veterans And Storms

By Crystal Zevon and Margaret Flowers for Popular Resistance. NOTE: The report below is compiled from posts made by Popular Resistance reporter Crystal Zevon (also of Searching for Occupy). Crystal was on the ground in the Oceti Sakowin Camp of Standing Rock in November and returned last week. Thousands of veterans and allies arrived over the weekend to be present for the possible eviction of the camp. On Monday, the light snowfall that was forecast turned into a dangerous blizzard. Temperatures dropped and many people sought refuge in Cannon Ball. Many people have gone home, but a solid group of people remain. We were there yesterday. They have a good supply of food. What are needed most are firewood, cold weather gear to protect skin from exposure, and winterization supplies. The camp will remain and the resistance to DAPL continues.

Energy Transfer Partners Pipeline Targeted In West Texas Protests

By Liz Hampton for Reuters - Two people were arrested Tuesday at a pipeline protest in West Texas, bringing an intensifying political battle against oil and gas infrastructure to a state where the energy industry typically enjoys wide support. About 40 protesters gathered outside the construction site of Energy Transfer Partners' Trans-Pecos pipeline near Alpine, Texas on Tuesday morning, and three locked themselves to the gate surrounding the site, according to Lori Glover, a member of the Big Bend Defense Coalition, which organized the event. The group intended to slow down construction, said Glover, who said she was arrested, along with one other protestor, for criminal trespassing.

The Dakota Access Pipeline And Doctrine Of Native Genocide

By Tim Scott for Truthout - The peaceful Native Water Protectors who have been resisting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) on sacred land belonging to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe have succeeded in winning federal accommodations to temporarily halt DAPL construction, but the energy company behind DAPL has pledged to proceed (with state support). Knowing the enduring historic and structural nature of this modern struggle -- a struggle in which the Water Protectors have courageously confronted violent local, state and private militarized forces, inspiring support from thousands of US military veterans -- is vital to understanding its significance.

Quebec Mohawk Chief Vows Civil Unrest If B.C. Pipeline Moves Forward

By Christopher Curtis for Montreal Gazette - A Quebec Mohawk chief is promising a coordinated campaign of civil disobedience if recently approved pipeline construction encroaches on aboriginal territory in British Columbia. The actions could range from demonstrations and rail blockades to people occupying government offices across Canada, according to Kanesatake Grand Chief Serge Simon. “I’ve always said my favourite form of action is civil disobedience,” said Simon, in an interview with the Montreal Gazette. “If the government insists on ignoring its commitment to First Nations, we’re looking at unrest in many areas of the country, not just in British Columbia.”

Standing Rock: The Fight Continues

By Margaret Flowers an Kevin Zeese for Popular Resistance. Bismarck, ND - Monday, December 5 was the date the the US Army Corps Of Engineers' eviction notice took effect. Tens of thousands of people converged on the Oceti Sakowin Camp over the weekend to be in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux in case the eviction was acted upon. On Sunday afternoon, the US Army Corps of Engineers announced that they were denying the final permit for Energy Transfer Partners to drill under Lake Oahe and that they would do an Environmental Impact Statement to assess other sites. The news was celebrated in the camp that night as a victory, although there was a healthy distrust of the US army Corps of Engineers and a sense that the struggle was not over.
