Survey: Freddie Gray’s Neighborhood Rife With Police Brutality

By Colin Daileda. Baltimore, MD - The Baltimore neighborhood of Sandtown-Winchester consumed the news cycle for a brief period in April 2015, when Freddie Gray, a black resident of the area, died in police custody. His death put a spotlight on the police department's relationship with the black residents of Baltimore, and the results of a survey released on March 8 show why the tension therein was bound to boil over. According to a survey conducted by Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development and the No Boundaries Coalition, which describes itself as a resident-led advocacy group based in west Baltimore, 453 out of 1,500 survey respondents in Sandtown-Winchester had experienced or witnessed "police misconduct."

New Doubts About Official Version Of Sandra Bland’s Death

By Michael McLaughlin for The Huffington Post - Contradictions in files about Sandra Bland's death are raising new questions about how the 28-year-old woman died in a Texas jail last summer. A medical examiner ruled in an autopsy that Bland killed herself in a jail in Waller County, Texas, three days after a state trooper was filmed manhandling her during a combative traffic stop. But documents obtained by The Huffington Post show discrepancies in the way officials described the condition of Bland's body when she was found dead in her cell.

No Federal Charges Against Officer Who Shot Ramarley Graham

By Lia Eustachewich for New York Post - A federal grand jury will not be convened to weigh criminal charges in the police-involved shooting death of Bronx teen Ramarley Graham, officials announced Tuesday in closing the 2012 case. US Attorney Preet Bharara’s office had been investigating since 2014 whether Graham’s civil rights were violated – but concluded there was “insufficient evidence to meet the high burden of proof required for a federal criminal civil rights prosecution.”

Justice For Peter Liang Protest Ignores Justice For Akai Gurley

By Keegan Stephan for Keegan NYC - Today, thousands gathered in support of Peter Liang, the NYPD officer who shot and killed Akai Gurley, and was recently convicted of manslaughter and other charges by a Brooklyn jury. When family and supporters of Akai Gurley arrived to counter protest, they were booed, cursed at, flipped off, and told to leave. Protesters at the rally and on-line said they want the judge to dismiss the manslaughter charge against Liang, and believe that he was only convicted because he is Chinese-American – that racism skewed justice and he would not have been convicted if he were white or black.

Bland: Suspicions Mount, Fight To Expose Death Evidence

By Michael McLaughlin for The Huffington Post - Relatives of Sandra Bland, the jailed motorist who authorities say hanged herself in a Texas cell seven months ago, said they're still unable to get basic information about her death from authorities. Police files contain discrepancies, they said, and a videotape that investigators promised would show the hanging never materialized. Further, authorities haven't returned personal items confiscated from Bland when she was booked. A medical examiner ruled that Bland, 28, committed suicide on July 13, but her family is unconvinced, their lawyer said.

The Consequences For Eric Garner’s Videographer

By Luna Olavarría Gallegos for The Indypendent - “Yeah, I knew what I was recording, but I didn't think he was going to die.” This is how Ramsey Orta responds when I ask him what was going through his head when he shot the video of Eric Garner’s death. Orta tells me that just a week before, he had filmed a video of his friend getting beat up by the cops on the same Staten Island block where Garner was choked by Officer Daniel Pantaleo. It has been eighteen months since the world watched the scene unfold through Orta’s cellphone and just over a year since a grand jury declined to indict Officer Pantaleo, and still, Orta is not able to keep the incident in the past...

Chicago Cop’s Lawsuit Against Estate Of Slain Teen Might Be A First

By Adeshina Emmanuel for The Chicago Reporter - Chicago police officer Robert Rialmo was so traumatized after he killed Quintonio LeGrier and his neighbor Bettie Jones last December that Legrier’s estate should pay him $10 million. That’s according to a lawsuit filed by Rialmo’s lawyer in Cook County Circuit Court. The case might be a first, say some local and national legal experts. The lawsuit presents an unusual argument that attempts to make citizens pay for the hazards of policing.
