Former Detroit Officer Found Guilty In Videotaped Beating Of Black Man

By Staff of The Huffington Post - DETROIT (AP) -- A white, former Detroit-area police officer was found guilty Thursday of assault and misconduct in the bloody beating of a black driver during a traffic stop that was captured on video. Wayne County jurors handed down the verdict in the case against William Melendez, who was charged in the January beating of Floyd Dent. Police stopped Dent, 58, in the Detroit suburb of Inkster for disregarding a stop sign, and dashcam video from a police vehicle shows Melendez punching him 16 times in the head. It wasn't until after WDIV-TV aired the footage in March that Melendez was fired.

FBI and DOJ: Will Track Police Shootings

By Xxdr Zombiexx for Daily Kos - In separate announcements, the FBI and the Department of Justice say they’ll create programs to monitor police-involved shootings at the federal level. Law enforcement agencies are tasked with tallying their own officer-involved shootings, but after the officer-involved death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, it came to light that no government agency maintains a complete database of the national numbers. On Wednesday, FBI Director James B. Comey called it “embarrassing” and “ridiculous” that up until very recently, officials had made no concerted effort to track the sort of violence that has inspired national protests and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.

‘Major Shortcomings’ In Baltimore Police Response

By Kevin Rector for The Baltimore Sun - As rioting erupted on Baltimore's streets in April, the city police Command Center — where top decision-makers had gathered to get a handle on the situation — was itself in disarray, according to a new review of the agency's response to the unrest. In a room designed to hold 30 to 40 people, as many as 100 had gathered, some without a clear role. The crowding was so severe that the department's 10-person Analytical Intelligence Section, which was charged with developing information that could help the department deploy resources and anticipate threats, was blocked from its own equipment — and provided just two computers to do its work.

Tarantino Doubles Down, Sawant Re-Elected, Reclaiming Armistice Day

By Dennis Trainor Jr for Acronym TV - Quentin Tarantino doubles down on his statements at an anti-policy brutality rally, calling out White Supremacy and Police Brutality + an interview with the organizer of the Rise Up October protests, Carl Dix. Kshama Sawant proves that not only can a socialist get elected in this country, she can get re-elected. But why, in calling for an independent party of the left, does Sawant ignore the Greens and praise Bernie Sanders? Lawrence Lessig drops out of the presidential race. And in the interest of peace, should we ditch Veterans Day and reclaim Armistice Day?

Police Unions Call For Tarantino Boycott After He Protest Police Violence

By Scott Eric Kaufman for Salon, Note: Huffington Post reports the threatening language of police union leader. The language sounds like he means Tarantino will suffer a “surprise” before his next film is released, it is not until much later where he clarifies it will be an economic surprise. Will this kind of language incite violence or other police abuse against Tarantino? If it does police should expect a huge blowback from the action. The head of the Fraternal Order of Police said he has a "surprise" for filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. Jim Pasco, executive director of the largest U.S. police union, offered the creepy statement Thursday to The Hollywood Reporter, vowing to get back at the "Pulp Fiction" director for comments decrying police brutality at a rally last month.

Half Of Black Millennials Know A Victim Of Police Violence

By Jesse J. Holland for The Associated Press - WASHINGTON (AP) -- Years before the high-profile deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and Freddie Gray, more than half of African-American millennials indicated they, or someone they knew, had been victimized by violence or harassment from law enforcement, a new report says. The information, from the "Black Millennials in America" report issued by the Black Youth Project at the Study of Race, Politics and Culture at the University of Chicago, reflects starkly different attitudes among black, Latino, Asian and white millennials when it comes to policing, guns and the legal system in the United States.

Police Killings Surpass Worst Years of Lynching, Capital Punishment

By Jerome Karabel for The Huffington Post - Video cameras have transformed how we view police killings. First, there was the horrifying homicide in July 2014 of Eric Garner, placed in a choke-hold for selling loose cigarettes and denied medical assistance for several long minutes despite pleading "I can't breathe" eleven times. Then there was the shocking slaying in April 2015 of Walter Scott, stopped for a non-functioning third brake light and shot in the back in broad daylight while running away from the police. Most recently, there was the fatal shooting this July of Samuel Dubose, stopped for a missing front license plate and shot in the head while attempting to drive away. In all three cases -- two of them caught by citizen videos and the third by police camera -- the victims were African-American.

Texas Granted Cop Immunity In Fatal Shooting Of Unarmed Man

By Joanna Plucinska for Time - Manslaughter charges against a Texas cop who shot and killed an unarmed black man have been dropped by a federal judge, after he ruled that the police officer had federal immunity at the time because of his work with the FBI. Charles Kleinert, a former Austin police detective who also worked for the FBI, killed 32-year-old Larry Jackson Jr. after shooting him in the neck following a chase in Texas on July 26, 2013. Kleinert was initially indicted on manslaughter charges by a Texas grand jury for the crime. However, on June 26, 2015, he filed a motion to dismiss the indictment.

Statement: Solidarity With Corey

By Students for a Democratic Society. Boynton Beach, FL - Students for a Democratic Society stands in solidarity with the family and friends of Corey Jones--another black man shot and killed by plainclothes Palm Beach Gardens Police Officer Nouman K. Raja. Corey Jones, a 31 year old church drummer from Boynton Beach, FL, was driving back from a gig when his car broke down. Jones was waiting for a tow truck in the early morning of Sunday October 18 on the side of I-95 in South Florida when Officer Raja parked next to him in an unmarked police car without a camera. Raja claims that Jones was “armed” and “dangerous”. However, we know time and time again the police will fabricate stories about black people. Even now the Palm Beach Gardens Police have refused to release any details to Corey’s family with the excuse that it relates to an “ongoing investigation.”

Black Lives Matter Says It Plans To Disrupt Twin Cities Marathon

By Alison Wade for Runner's World - The St. Paul chapter of Black Lives Matter has announced plans to disrupt the Twin Cities Marathon, scheduled to take place Sunday, October 4. In doing so, the organization hopes to draw attention to recent cases of what it alleges is police brutality. The protesters hope to stop runners from finishing the marathon, said organizer Rashad Turner of Black Lives Matter St. Paul. "Our plan is just to disrupt business as usual and try to create as much awareness as possible," Turner told Runner's World. "Our hopes are that when the marathon runners reach us at the finish line, instead of being more concerned with finishing the marathon, that they’ve been able to do some critical thinking throughout this week and understand how powerful it would be if we all stood together in solidarity against the injustices that are plaguing our society and plaguing the community right here in St. Paul, Minnesota.”

Ending Police Militarization, One City At A Time

By Ana Conner and Tara Tabassi in Truth Out - Urban Shield, the world's largest SWAT training and war-weapons expo, was held in September in California's Bay Area, beginning on the 14th anniversary of 9/11. Hosted each year since 2007 in the Bay Area's Alameda County (last year in Oakland, this year in Pleasanton) with exercises all across the Bay, it is attended by hundreds of local, federal and international law enforcement agencies and weapons manufacturers. Since his tenure began in 2007, Alameda County's sheriff, Gregory J. Ahern, has been waging war on Black and Brown communities across the Bay Area. Urban Shield solidifies Ahern's war, and makes it a profitable one. As the Bay Area Urban Shield's core organizer, he has received over $100,000 in contributions for his electoral campaign from Urban Shield vendors, such as 511 Tactical, Adamson Police Products and Corizon Health.
