Trump

It’s Worse Than You Think

By Chris Hedges for Truthdig. Our capitalist democracy ceased to function more than two decades ago. We underwent a corporate coup carried out by the Democratic and Republican parties. There are no institutions left that can authentically be called democratic. Trump and Hillary Clinton in a functioning democracy would have never been presidential nominees. The long and ruthless corporate assault on the working class, the legal system, electoral politics, the mass media, social services, the ecosystem, education and civil liberties in the name of neoliberalism has disemboweled the country. It has left the nation a decayed wreck. We celebrate ignorance. We have replaced political discourse, news, culture and intellectual inquiry with celebrity worship and spectacle.

Actions To Finish Off The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)!

By Flush the TPP. We have been fighting the TPP for the past 5 years. The work of activists across the country and in solidarity with activists around the world succeeded in pushing the TPP fight into an election year and making it politically toxic. We were told two years ago that voters didn't care about trade, yet it was the TPP that played a critical role in the Democrat's loss in the elections. Voters supported Trump to protest the Democrat's support for the TPP and failure to address the needs of working people and the poor. Now we are in the battle of the year: President Obama says that he will do all that he can to ratify the TPP before he leaves office. Trump opposes the TPP. Members of Congress who have lost their seats or are retiring are not accountable to voters. We can stop the TPP if we take action now to prevent its ratification in the lame duck session of Congress!

Trump Protested Aggressively At Minnesota Fundraiser

By Staff for Popular Resistance. Protesters at a Donald Trump fundraiser at the Minneapolis Convention Center got between vehicles and jumped on the hood of a Secret Service SUV in Trump’s motorcade as the candidate was leaving the building. NEW: There are reports that the vehicle carrying Trump was attacked by the protesters. The New York businessman made his first visit to the state as the Republican presidential candidate for a private nighttime fundraiser at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Dozens of protesters gathered out front ahead of the event and marched around the large building. Later in the evening, a smaller contingent grew unruly. Some fundraiser attendees were pushed and jostled, spit on and verbally harassed as they left the convention center.

Obama Said Hillary Will Continue His Legacy

By Michael Hudson for Counterpunch. Leading up to Monday’s Democratic Party convention, Hillary chose Blue Dog Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia as her VP. This was followed by the Wikileaks release of Democratic National Committee (DNC) e-mail files showing it acting as the Clinton Campaign Committee even to the point of using the same lawyers as her own campaign to oppose Bernie Sanders. The response across the Democratic neocon spectrum, from Anne Applebaum at the Washington Post to red-baiting Paul Krugman and the Sunday talk shows it was suggested that behind the Wikileaks to release DNC e-mails was a Russian plot to help elect Trump as their agent. Former US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul lent his tattered reputation to claim that Putin must have sponsored the hackers who exposed the DNC dirty tricks against Bernie.

Protests Outside RNC Mock Trump, Cover Range Of Issues

By Kevin Zeese for Popular Resistance. There were protests inside and outside of the Republican National Convention where Donald Trump is becoming the nominee of the party. Protesters from the right and left were outside including evangelicals, gun rights advocates and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Jones caused the only notable conflict when he attacked anti-capitalist protesters and was removed from the area by police. While people braced for a lot of conflict outside of the RNC and police were brought in from other parts of Ohio and the region, there has been little conflict and few arrests. On Tuesday there were only three arrests for those raising a banner at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that exlaimed "Don't Trump Our Communities." That protest was focused on stopping fracking and on immigration. The protests were creative, humorous, mocking of Trump and covered a wide range of progressive issues including opposition to war, seeking to end deportation, welcoming refugees, racism, police abuse, the failures of capitalism and more.

Inside The Protest That Stopped The Trump Rally

By Keith O'Brien for Politico. Just 50 feet in front of the podium where Trump was scheduled to appear at any moment, Nathaniel Lewis, a 25-year-old African-American graduate student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, had established a beachhead of sorts: a pocket of about three dozen college students and activists. What Lewis and dozens of his UIC classmates had planned was perhaps bigger—and better organized—than any protest Trump had faced to date. “I don’t want to get punched in the face,” one woman, an undergrad, told Lewis over the din inside the UIC Pavilion. Lewis nodded. “I’m not going to let that happen to you,” he assured her. They had begun four days earlier with nothing. They had hoped that morning just to get inside the arena, maybe just a few of them, and maybe make a dent in the side of Trump’s candidacy.

Mass Protest Shuts Down Trump Rally

By Kim Bellware for Huffington Post. A Donald Trump rally that attracted thousands to the University of Illinois at Chicago was abruptly canceled Friday night amid his campaign's security fears, sparking shouting and scuffling between the candidate's fans and anti-Trump protesters. The rally was called off about a half-hour after the scheduled 6 p.m. start time, after thousands of Trump fans and anti-Trump protesters packed into the free event, which required online registration. Thousands more gathered outside, surrounded by a police perimeter, and people became more vocal as the starting time approached. “I have never seen anything like it. It’s amazing,” CNN’s Jim Acosta said. The network said approximately 8,500 people were at the rally.
