Trump Visit Met By Popular Protests In Malaysia Over US Backing Israel

Hundreds of people took to the streets in Malaysia on Sunday, October 26, to oppose US President Donald Trump’s visit to the country. Protesters raised slogans in support of the Palestinian resistance and condemned US support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Protesters also opposed various interventionist policies followed by the US across the globe with chants of “down with imperialism” and demanded Malaysia break its ties with it. The call for the demonstration was made by the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM), along with several other organizations who gathered at Kuala Lumpur’s Independence Square and Ampang Park with banners and posters denouncing imperialism and shouting slogans in support of the Palestinian people.

What Is APEC?

If you look at the news, the media treats the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum more like a gala than a policy forum about regional economic policies. Despite high level meetings having occurred between the government and business interests (i.e., the APEC Business Advisory Committee), despite two senior official meetings having taken place, the media has done a negligible job of bringing the agenda and discussions in these meetings to public consciousness or debate. Instead, it has mostly focused on who will be there – K-pop megastar G-Dragon was named APEC Ambassador – or whether the accommodations and infrastructure are adequate.

A New Asian Triad: ASEAN, China, And The Persian Gulf Align

On 26–27 May, the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, hosted the first-ever Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)–Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)–China summit, bringing together three of the Global South’s most economically dynamic regions for a trilateral meeting of immense strategic consequence. While not formalized as a binding alliance, the summit marks the beginning of a bold realignment – one that unites East and West Asia via economic interdependence, shared development visions, and a collective desire to escape western economic coercion. The summit is historic not only because of its trilateral format, but because it signals the emergence of a flexible Global South bloc capable of recalibrating regional and global power balances.

Trump’s Tariffs Are Uniting China, Europe, Japan, South Korea, And ASEAN

Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that the US government has what he called a “grand encirclement” strategy aimed at isolating and weakening China. Trump hit China with tariffs of 145%, imposing what is essentially a trade embargo. The Trump administration wanted to pressure Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and India to follow the US and “approach China as a group”, Bessent said, according to Bloomberg. This strategy is clearly failing. The finance ministers and central bank governors of China, Japan, South Korea, and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) met in Italy on May 4 and published a joint statement pledging “to further strengthen regional financial cooperation”.

This Is Why Trump’s Tariffs Will Fail

In his first term as president of the United States, Donald Trump launched a trade war against China. In his second term, he has expanded that trade war to many countries around the world. In a ceremony outside the White House on April 2, which the US president dubbed “Liberation Day”, Trump announced sweeping new tariffs on dozens of countries, including high taxes on imports from top US trading partners: 54% on China, 46% on Vietnam, 25% on South Korea, 24% on Japan, and 20% on the European Union. Trump falsely claimed that these tariffs were “reciprocal”, but they were actually unilateral.
