Bringing Labor Stories To Conservative Communities

We often hear that working class folks in conservative communities are hopelessly drawn to the dominant storylines of the wealthy and powerful. That they don’t want to know about labor or “people’s” history. Well, Len Shindel has proven the naysayers wrong, big time. He has taken his shoe-leather history of a 1970, 8-month-long strike of public sector workers to the people of Western Maryland, and they have embraced him and his book with open arms. Here’s how he did it. Moving to Garrett County, Md. after retiring from his union job, Len decided, upon the advice of a friend, to investigate an 8-month long strike by the county’s road workers that was the longest public worker strike in U.S. history.

The Deep Ties And Deeper Pockets Of Minnesota’s Far-Right

Maple Grove, MN – The Rush Creek Golf Club’s event space was filled with the din of knives and forks, scraping and tapping ceramic to the tune of conspiratorial chit chat, as a fluorescent white audience –mostly over the retirement age — shared with one another the latest misinformation to come across their Facebook feeds. At one of the many tables in the room, an old man in a trucker hat broke the ice with the man sitting next to him by diving right into the assassination of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman. For him, it was just another example of how the Democrats will stop at nothing to steal his tax dollars.

Project 2025 Continues The Historic Racist, Fascist Project

The right wing counter-revolution has been going on for more than 50 years. The Powell Memo was a 1971 directive from soon-to-be Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell, instructing the US Chamber of Commerce how to defeat the “attack on the American free enterprise system". In other words, how to defeat any leftist or even leftish policies. The Contract with America outlined Newt Gingrich’s plan for republican control of congress. These are just two examples of conservative narratives that periodically receive public attention. They are declarations of how the right wing have been working to counter the gains of the New Deal and the Black liberation movement that resulted in benefits to everyone in the U.S.

Conservatives Want To Destroy Public Schools

Tulsa, Oklahoma — Ashley Daly still gets angry thinking about the first Oklahoma state board of education meeting she attended. It was August 2022 and the board was preparing to downgrade the accreditation for two school districts, including Tulsa, where Daly’s daughter attends school, over alleged violations of Oklahoma’s new law banning critical race theory. As the board penalized the district for a diversity training that predated the law, the realization struck her: “They were punishing a school district of 33,000 kids for political reasons, and I was the only parent from Tulsa in the room.”

Conservatives Can’t Stop Waging War On Schools

Florida is fertile ground for the long-standing Republican war on education. Florida’s Advanced Placement (AP) psychology courses — college-level courses taught in high schools — were temporarily banned because of content related to sex and gender, and the state’s AP African American studies curriculum has removed such topics as Black Lives Matter. The Florida Board of Education even adopted the right-wing misinformation platform PragerU into its curriculum, which downplays slavery and colonialism. This landscape isn’t new. Some 15 years ago, Kate Sheppard reported on one widely used textbook littered with factual misrepresentations, making students “choose between hard facts and the answers that their official curriculum [deemed] correct.”

Grassroots Organizing In Red States Is At The Heart Of Abolitionist Struggle

In Republican-controlled regions across the country, people are engaged in abolitionist organizing: Even though conditions vary, people are organizing for freedom virtually everywhere. This is nothing new. The South, for example, has been a site for abolitionist organizing for centuries, and it continues to be one, despite the attacks on long-settled civil rights being organized by Republican supermajorities in statehouses. Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson is the first Black woman to codirect the Highlander Research and Education Center, a century-old nexus for abolitionist and labor organizing in Tennessee and beyond. She is also a cofounder of the Movement for Black Lives.
