Nestlé Pays $200 A Year To Bottle Water Near Flint

By Jessica Glenzain for The Guardian - While Flint battles a water crisis, just two hours away the beverage giant pumps almost 100,000 times what an average Michigan resident uses into plastic bottles. Gina Luster bathed her child in lukewarm bottled water, emptied bottle by bottle into the tub, for months. It became a game for her seven-year-old daughter. Pop the top off a bottle, and pour it into the tub. It takes about 30 minutes for a child to fill a tub this way. Pop the top, pour it in; pop the top, pour it in. Maybe less if you can get gallon jugs. Luster lives in Flint, Michigan, and here, residents believe tap water is good for one thing: to flush the toilet. “I don’t even water my plants with it,” she said. Flint became synonymous with lead-poisoned water after government officials, looking to save money, switched the city’s water supply from Detroit city water to water from the corrosive Flint river. Once the city had switched, the number of children with elevated lead exposure doubled; residents reported unexplained rashes and losing hair. An unpublished study recently found fetal deaths in Flint increased by 58% during the crisis.

‘Travesty’: Nestlé Outbids Another Town For Control Of Local Water Supply

By Nadia Prupis for Common Dreams - Corporate giant Nestlé continued its privatization creep on Thursday as it won approval to take over another Canadian community's water supply, claiming it needed the well to ensure "future business growth." Nestlé purchased the well near Elora, Ontario from Middlebrook Water Company last month after making a conditional offer in 2015, the Canadian Press reports. In August, the Township of Centre Wellington made an offer to purchase the Middlebrook well site to protect access to the water for the community.

Community Defeats Nestle As It Drops Water Extraction Plans

By Andrea Germanos for Common Dreams - After facing community resistance, bottled beverage giant Nestlé Waters North America this week ditched its plans to extract water from a Monroe County, Penn. spring. The plan would have seen Nestlé take 200,000 gallons of water per day from the source in Kunkletown, located in Eldred Township, and truck it away daily to a nearby plant where it would have been bottled under its Deer Park brand.

Nestlé Just Gained Control Over This Town’s Water For Next 45 Years

By Nathan Wellman for US Uncut - Tea Party Republican Governor Paul LePage of Maine helped Nestlé secure a contract that gives Poland Springs, a Nestlé subsidiary, permission to take the small town of Fryeburg’s groundwater for the next 25 years for their own profit. The deal could stretch to 45 years due to built-in extensions. Today that deal was upheld by Maine’s Supreme Judicial Court, essentially cutting off activists’ last attempts to scuttle the deal.

Oregon County Rejects Nestle Water-Grab

By Andrea Germanos for Common Dreams - Voters in one Oregon county on Tuesday approved a ban on commercial bottled water production, stopping a years-long effort by Swiss transnational Nestle to sell over 100 million gallons of water a year from the Columbia River Gorge. "This is really a resounding victory for everyone who cares about protecting not only our water supply, but water supplies around the world," said Aurora del Val with Local Water Alliance, which filed the ballot measure petition.

A Pennsylvania Town Fights Predatory Water Extraction

By Alexis Bonogofsky for Truthout - Donna Diehl, a 55-year-old school bus driver from Kunkletown, Pennsylvania, a small historic town located on the edge of the Poconos, wanted to do three things this year: drive the bus, paint her bathroom and learn to crochet. Instead, Diehl, along with dozens of her neighbors, is spending her time trying to stop the largest food and beverage corporation in the world from taking her community's water, putting it in bottles and selling it for a massive profit.

A Tale Of Two Tyrants: Nestlé’s Role In Prayuth’s Thailand

By Caroline Holmund for Truthout - In what came as a shock to many, in February, the United States took the step of completely banning the import of goods made by slave labor. Indeed, President Obama signed the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015, closing an 86-year-old loophole that had allowed the United States to purchase foreign goods produced with child labor or forced labor. Hold the applause, for this moral awakening did not come from Washington, DC, but stemmed from the efforts of journalists working for The Associated Press as well as from Nestlé's surprising admission of guilt that its global supply chain relied on impoverished migrant workers in Thailand.

Act Out! Think Before You Pink, Lee Camp & California Battles The Bottle

By Eleanor Goldfield for Act Out! - Think before you pink – it's October and pink-washing is in full swing for Breast Cancer Awareness Month but here are several reasons why you should abstain from the cancer fan-fare, and how you can really battle the big C's – corporations and cancer. The corruption of the Susan G. Koman Foundation which spends its money on high salaries, lawsuits against other cancer groups, partnering with big oil with pink drill bits at fracking sites spreading toxins that cause cancer. It is a superficial month of marketing without any discussion of how we inadequately fund research and make access to healthcare inadequate. Next up, Lee Camp turns tragedy into comedy to get out serious messages about corporatocracy, war and empire. Lee talks about activism in the entertainment industry. Comedy led him to politics, lots of steps along the way, but the one moment -- stopping an execution in Texas with other death penalty activists -- where he learned a very small number of people can make a significant difference. and finally - California's bitter fight against Nestle over bottled water and undermining the California water supply. Activists file suit to stop Nestle from pumping water out of California forests.
