Nun Given 35-Month Sentence In Prison For Anti-Nuclear Peace Protest

"Please have no leniency with me," Sister Rice told the judge in her closing statement. "To remain in prison for the rest of my life would be the greatest gift you could give me." The nun and her two accomplices broke into the facility grounds by cutting through three fences with bolt cutters and sneaking past dogs and armed guards and a sign warning that trespassers risk becoming subject to deadly force. Once inside, the protesters splattered human blood on the wall of a $548 million storage bunker containing much of the nation’s bomb-grade uranium, spray painted Biblical slogans of peace, and defaced the exterior of the complex with a hammer. "The protesters put themselves at a high risk of losing their life in performing this act," a NationalNuclear Security Administration spokesman has said. "We are thankful that did not occur." The three activists managed to spend more than two hours inside the restricted area before guards found them singing and hanging banners. The three reportedly invited the guards to break bread with them and offered the guards a Bible, candles, and flowers.

Former Congressional Chief Of Staff Hopeful for Prospects of Peace

Preference for diplomacy over military action should be self-evident, but not for everyone. Some still pine for the days of old when the Dulles brothers waged clandestine wars across the globe to impose the U.S. will on sovereign nations — often installing brutal dictators who would protect our interests at the expense of democratic values and local needs. In hisWeekly Standard magazine, veteran neoconservative activist William Kristol describesleading through diplomacy rather than military might as “feeble execution of our foreign policy.” But we are paying a severe price for Kristol’s prescriptions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we are not trusted in Iran, much of Africa, and Latin America because of the Dulles folly. More military muscle will not help. Others fear a reduction in military action will collapse the economy. After all, every American was raised knowing, without question, that war is good for the economy. Several years ago, I introduced several members of Congress to the concept of peacebuilding. One of them, an old friend, rejected the idea of building a more peaceful world out of hand. “You can’t do that,” he exclaimed. “It will ruin the economy.” He meant it.

A People’s Movement to End All War

“The abolition of war is an idea whose time has come. We are at a transformative moment in history. Our Mother Earth is under siege from destructive global warming and industrialization. It is essential that we mobilize to save our planet. War is a cruel and untenable distraction, draining trillions of dollars and incalculable losses of intellectual firepower away from the essential work that needs to be done to create a livable future for humanity.” — Alice Slater, Global Council of Abolition 2000 “War is a crime against humanity. When 90% of the casualties of war are civilians including children, its time to End ALL WARS! The world badly needs the resources to meet human and environmental needs. Wars are not making us more secure, but creating more enemies.

Earth Day To May Day Climate Convergence

The campaign will highlight the origins and recent history of May Day in the deepening global struggle for worker and immigrant rights. It will bring environmental and climate justice in to the May Day mix, pointing out that working people and immigrants pay a steep price for the economic and health impacts of environmental degradation and fossil fuels. Likewise, climate change hurts working people and the poor, who are most vulnerable to the storms, drought, floods, rising seas and greater food prices that climate change brings. In the spirit of Convergence, activists hope to strengthen both events by bringing Earth Day issues and advocates into the May Day celebration, and May Day concerns and supporters into Earth Day events.

Join New Abolition Movement: World Beyond War

All individuals and organizations, all over the world, are invited to sign a statement in support of ending all war, and to join in the planning of a new movement to be launched on September 21, 2014. This is the statement: I understand that wars and militarism make us less safe rather than protect us, that they kill, injure and traumatize adults, children and infants, severely damage the natural environment, erode civil liberties, and drain our economies, siphoning resources from life-affirming activities. I commit to engage in and support nonviolent efforts to end all war and preparations for war and to create a sustainable and just peace.

Women Make Demands, Demonstrate During Syrian Peace Talks

A global coalition of women's groups will hold a demonstration outside of the UN Syria peace talks to call for an immediate ceasefire in Syria and for women to have better representation at the peace talks table. Two of the women joining the demonstration are Nobel Peace Laureates, Mairead Maguire and Ann Patterson from Ireland. Activists converged in Geneva earlier this week to meet with Syrian women to hear their analysis of the political situation and their platform for peace “We were so impressed by the Syrian women we met, but disappointed that the UN has not allowed them to have an official role in the talks representing civil society,” said CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin. “Once again it’s the guys with the guns who will determine the future of Syria,” she added.

Christmas In Bethlehem

Tomorrow on Christmas day (Western calendar) starting at 4:30 PM we will have a candlelight march under the banner “Light a candle for Self Determination” in Beit Sahor (organized by Palestinian Center for Rapprochement Between People and the Joint YMCA/YWCA Advocacy Initiative). We demand that Bethlehem is freed from the occupation and colonization that now limits us to develop only 13% of our district. We demand the right of return and self determination for all Palestinians. The end of 2013 and beginning of 2014 is a time to reflect that some 2.5 billion human beings believe in a message that originated with a Palestinian child thought to be born in a manger over 2000 years ago. The land was called Palestine at the time of Jesus’ birth and also for hundreds of years before he was born and it is still geographically Palestine today.

Human Rights Blogger Describes Orweillian World

I am back to Bethlehem which is physically under Israeli occupation. But then again that is less significant than mental occupation from which so many people in Palestine and elsewhere seem to suffer. Perhaps if more of us free their minds of this mental occupation we can more easily rid ourselves of the physical occupation and colonization whether here or in America or the rest of the world. The following are just samples of the symptoms of this Orwellian world. -Israeli occupation forces demolish yet another Palestiniam village and the Western goverments remain silent. Meanwhile, the Palestinian authority continues to “negotiate” for the 21st year in a row and without legality (going back to the Palestinian people).

Will Williams: Four Decades Of Fighting For Your Rights

Williams maintains that people speaking out and raising their voices draws attention to these issues. He is a consistent voice and protester at rallies for peace and justice. His main message is that we need to be aware and fight for all of our rights. He reminds us that during the Civil Rights Movement of the ‘60s, military veterans rallied behind Dr Martin Luther King Jr. and were central to this movement. Williams encourages families and others to educate youth about the true history of these United States and cites Howard Zinn’s book, “The People’s History” as one of his favorites and one everyone should read. He is a great role model for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and encourages them to find alternatives to violence and bullying. Will has been married to Dorothy “Dot” Williams for 46 years and credits her for being key in his survival while in Viet Nam and upon his return. He has devoted his life to promoting peace, justice, and the building of a better community.

POEM: I Am Not ‘War-Weary’

I am not ‘war-weary’; I’m angry … angry at those who used sarin in Syria … angry at those who think more killing is the answer … angry at all presidents with blood on their hands … angry at the talking heads who distinguish worthy from unworthy victims … angry at politicians who care more about ‘credibility’ than about human life … angry at those who call for war any time the flag is waved … and angry at the endless headlines that claim we’re just ‘war-weary’, as though one good head-clearing nap would make Americans see the wisdom of killing to punish killing.

Syria Alert: Pledge Peace To Congress

"The most effective deterrent against the use of chemical weapons is not the mass bombing of Syria, an action that would be illegal under international law and counterproductive, but to use the international legal system that has been built since World War I and take legal action under the Chemical Weapons Convention," wrote Attorney General Kevin Zeese yesterday in an official Green Shadow Cabinet statement. Secretary of Defense Leah Bolger and Secretary of Peace David Swanson have warned that: "U.S. military involvement in Syria could only make things worse. Syria does not need a 'no fly' zone. It needs a 'no weaponizing' zone. The White House and its allies need to stop arming one side of a civil war, and to persuade Russia to stop arming the other. Further escalating the violence will result in nothing that could outweigh the damage of that violence."

October 7: Stand Against War And For Our Rights

“Plato wrote ‘only the dead have seen the end of war.’ War veterans, loved ones of the fallen, and certainly those living in war zones do not have the option of closing down their memories at 10 p.m. “I know that many want us war vets to go out of sight and not bother them, except when we are needed for some parade. Some of us are not going away at 10 p.m. or any other time. If they do not like it, maybe they should have thought of that before they sent us to war. “We have an absolute right to our memories and to assemble peacefully. I was there last October and was arrested. I will be there again on this Oct. 7th. I am not coming in order to be arrested by the NYPD. My intention in coming is because it is my right and my obligation to my comrades, those who died in Vietnam and those who still live, to be there.”

Drafted Into The Peace Army

Our security as individuals and communities relies on our ability to promote the security of others while seeking our own. A Peace Army is a loosely connected network of individuals and organizations who can commit themselves to a robust training of nonviolence to be able to respond constructively in times of conflict and sometimes to intervene in times of violence. While all involved are not required or expected to fall on the extreme end of commitment of direct intervention, this movement needs all of us. A viable and practical nonviolent security network asks all of us to expand our understanding of the possibility for nonviolent institutions and practices to eventually replace or reform the current institutions in place that are operating through the threat and use of violence.

Bradley Manning Should Win Nobel Peace Prize

Peace is more than simply the absence of war; it is the active creation of something better. Alfred Nobel recognized this when he created alongside those for chemistry, literature, medicine and physics, an annual prize for outstanding contributions in peace. Nobel's foresight is a reminder to us all that peace must be created, maintained, and advanced, and it is indeed possible for one individual to have an extraordinary impact. For this year's prize, I have chosen to nominate US Army Pfc Bradley Manning, for I can think of no one more deserving. His incredible disclosure of secret documents to Wikileaks helped end the Iraq War, and may have helped prevent further conflicts elsewhere.
