Nationwide Medical Students’ Die-In, #WhiteCoats4BlackLives

The medical student die-ins today are another sign that the long-building racial injustices in this country will no longer be tolerated. A national consensus that the system needs to change is growing. Ever since Mike Brown's death in August, the people of Ferguson have been in the streets daily calling for justice. Following the grand jury announcement in Ferguson and then the Staten Island decision regarding Eric Garner's murder, people have been protesting regularly across the nation. I am so proud to see this generation of health professional students taking a stand on institutional racism and police violence. They are demonstrating the recognition that their job extends beyond the clinic door to addressing what happens in the community. Disease does not happen in isolation.

International Day Of Protest For Ayotzinapa 43

Mexico has a very deep wound right now after the disappearance of the 43 students in Ayotzinapa. On September 26, dozens of students took several buses to Iguala, and after a violent encounter with the police, 43 of them were allegedly taken to the police headquarters and never heard from them again. The government claimed the students where there to boycott a political event, but the students claim they were there to raise funds for their school. Mexican authorities eventually declared the students dead after weeks of investigation, but the people of Mexico are not letting this one go so easily. They’ve had enough with the government, and this atrocious act was the last straw, which detonated a series of protests around the whole country.

Ferguson Protesters Set Ground Rules For Police

A coalition of nearly 50 groups who have been protesting in Ferguson, Missouri since the shooting of the unarmed African American teen, Michael Brown, have issued a list of demands to law enforcement. They are calling it the “rules of engagement” and calling on police to accept them if they want there to be peaceful protests. Michael T. McPhearson, the executive director of Veterans For Peace, and a co-chair of the coalition said the group “must do what we can to ensure there’s not loss of life.” He added that, “we want to de-escalate violence, but we do not want to de-escalate action.” The coalition said that police are ultimately to blame for escalating tensions, as before they appeared on the streets in riot gear and the like, there had not been any instances of rioting or looting and protest leaders and activists had been successfully “policing” the crowds who had turned out up until that point. A new wave of protests are expected to erupt soon, as the grand jury decision about whether the killing of Michael Brown was justified is expected to come at any moment now. At a recent news conference about the list of demands issued to local, state and federal law enforcement, the “Don’t Shoot Coalition” said that police should be concerned with safety first, and if they are, this means they should be willing to agree to a “de-militarized response.”

Youth Stand Up To Police Violence

We Charge Genocide and other groups are training youth to record instances of police misconduct and share them on Twitter under the hashtag #chicopwatch. On August 13, an ensemble of young, mostly Black and Latino actors captivated the crowd packed tightly into Chicago’s Free Street Theater with their dramatic slow-motion performance about the death of Deonta Dewight Mackey, a 16-year-old fatally shot by police at a Chicago gas station last February after he tried to rob an off-duty officer at gunpoint. The actors were the Young Fugitives, a performance ensemble directed by Ricardo Gamboa that gained much attention last year for its production “Cold Summer,” about Chicago violence and the closing of public schools. The group’s performance about Mackey’s death is in the workshopping stages and will debut in January, a few weeks before the anniversary of the incident.
