The Administration Of Mayor Rahm Emanuel Keeps Monitoring Protesters

Even before thousands of demonstrators gathered in downtown Chicago to speak out against President Donald Trump’s inauguration last year, city police were watching. Recently released police and city records show that officers combed through social media posts and opened a formal information-gathering investigation into the protesters. Then, throughout that day — Jan. 20, 2017 — police and top aides to Mayor Rahm Emanuel closely tracked the movements of protesters, from when they boarded trains and buses in their neighborhoods and continuing through hours of rallies and marches in the Loop. It was another example of how the Emanuel administration routinely tracks protesters and activist groups, according to records I’ve acquired over the last several years through the Freedom of Information Act.

Chicago Teachers Union Takes Over Downtown In Protest

By Kevin Zeese for Popular Resistance. he Chicago Teachers Union organized a mass protest of thousands of teachers, students, parents and residents of Chicago. They took over downtown Chicago for the day. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) describes the reasons for the protest writing: The march came two days after Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s handpicked Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Forrest Claypool declared war on public school educators by threatening $100 million in classroom cuts—roughly 1,000 layoffs—and just one day after the CTU withdrew nearly $1 million from Bank of America. Sarah Chambers, one of 16 people arrested for sitting in at Bank of America, said, "Rahm has money for the banks but not for our students, When it’s reached a point where teachers are occupying banks to make their voices heard, it shows that we need an elected school board.”

Protests, Boycott Greet Rahm Emanuel At MLK Breakfast

By Bill Ruthhart and Juan Perez Jr. for the Chicago Tribune. For 30 years, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Breakfast hosted by Chicago's mayor has had a political undercurrent, as politicians from across the city paid tribute to the legendary civil rights leader while paying attention to the important constituency of African-American voters. But on Friday, the event became a political spectacle. Those who chose to attend Emanuel's event were greeted by about 20 angry protesters shouting "Shame on you!" as Chicago police worked to keep the group of demonstrators from blocking the entrance to the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place. The breakfast itself was interrupted three times by protesters. Ministers produced a list, claiming that more than 100 pastors had chosen to boycott the breakfast. "The mayor had to go to his old tactics of bringing busloads of people in from the nursing homes, retirement centers to bring some black faces in to fill the room."

SEIU Local 73 Gives Mayor Rahm $25,000

I was sitting by a pond on a bright sunny day, watching the little ducks float around, when a friend texted to say: SEIU Local 73 donated 25 grand to Mayor Rahm. No way, I texted back. No union—even one in Chicago—can be that stupid. Yes way, my friend responded, look it up yourself. So I went to the Illinois Board of Elections website and there it was in black and white. On May 30, Local 73—which represents hundreds of working-class city, park, and school employees—gave the mayor a little more of what he most definitely does not need: campaign money. WTF?!! I dutifully called and e-mailed Adam Rosen, Local 73's press spokesman, for an answer to my main question—what the hell were you thinking? But he didn't get back to me. Look, I understand that self-interest drives politics. In that regard, I can see why people like hedge-fund billionaires or lawyers for the parking meter company donate to Mayor Rahm. He's looking out for them.
