Regime Change

Modern US Regime Change Operations In Latin America

By Staff of Tele Sur - The preconditions for "regime change" take, in some cases, years of careful preparation. Most progressive governments in Latin America find themselves under intense attack in what is evidently a well synchronized and well financed continental plan of destabilization. Riots, street demonstrations, anti-corruption campaigns, protests about the domestic negative impact of the world economic crisis, general strikes, impeachment efforts, economic sabotage, and the like, have become the battle horses on which oligarchic forces in cahoots with Washington are riding to carry out "regime change."

US Planned Regime Change Of ‘Too Left’ Syrian Gov’t

By Stephen Gowans for What's Left - Documents prepared by US Congress researchers as early as 2005 revealed that the US government was actively weighing regime change in Syria long before the Arab Spring uprisings of 2011, challenging the view that US support for the Syrian rebels is based on allegiance to a “democratic uprising” and showing that it is simply an extension of a long-standing policy of seeking to topple the government in Damascus. Indeed, the researchers made clear that the US government’s motivation to overthrow the government of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad is unrelated to democracy promotion in the Middle East.

Reality Peeks Through In Ukraine

By Robert Parry for Consortium News - Nearly two years since U.S. officials helped foment a coup in Ukraine – partly justified by corruption allegations – the country continues to wallow in graft and cronyism as the living standards for average Ukrainians plummet, according to economic data and polls of public attitudes. Even the neocon-oriented Wall Street Journal took note of the worsening corruption in a Jan. 1, 2016 article observing that “most Ukrainians say the revolution’s promise to replace rule by thieves with the rule of law has fallen short and the government acknowledges that there is still much to be done.”

SOA Watch Spring Days Of Action Begin Tomorrow

The movement to close the SOA has been tremendously successful in educating broad sectors about the reality of U.S. foreign policy towards Latin America. While SOA Watch started out with a narrow focus of ending the training of repressive Latin American military forces and the closure of the School of the Americas, the scope of our work has broadened over the years. The SOA is part of a broader system of militarism. The institute is not an aberration of U.S. foreign policy but a clear example of it. At the Peoples Movement Assembly (PMA) this Spring, we will place the SOA into the broader political frame. We will explore the intersectionality of social justice movements in the US, and the relationship between militarized US policy, mass incarceration, deportations, the "War on Drugs," etc. Art and culture will be an integral part of the PMA.

Wikileaks Exposed US’ Efforts To Destabilize Venezuela

The wikileaks cable below from 2013 shows the depth of collaboration between private corporations and the US government to destabilize Chavez-Maduro government in Venezuela. This campaign is ongoing as seen in manipulation of the availability of goods and the destabilization of Venezuelan currency by the illegal influx of US dollars with the effects of manufactured scarcity and inflation that fuel unrest and as seen in the use of students to create opposition to President Maduro. In the last 6 months, Maduro has expelled 6 US diplomats who were caught causing these problems. These are time-tested methods of regime change used by the US. And the US and oligarchic media in Venezuela cooperate by telling outright lies and omitting important information. Let us not be fooled.
