Guaido’s Failed Foreign Tour Ends With A Flop

Juan Guaidó proclaimed himself the president of Venezuela a year ago but despite multiple coup attempts, he never took power and his support there rapidly disappeared. Now, with his foreign tour concluding, Guaidó's support is shrinking around the world as well. Rather than looking presidential, he appears clownish. Rather than developing new plans to try to topple President Maduro, he is left without any concrete promises from European governments, which have been more resistant than the United States toward imposing more sanctions on Venezuela as Guaidó was requesting. Despite his failures, according to US law, as long as President Trump recognizes him as the President of Venezuela then the courts will go along with the charade. Such is the situation we will face when we go to trial on...

What’s Next In Venezuela After The Recent Events?

Last week left some clues as to what we should expect in Venezuela regarding its political scenario for the coming months. Let’s make a review and try to connect some dots. Fact 1: The uncomfortable truth Venezuela’s United Socialist Party vice-president Diosdado Cabello said in a press conference that local opposition has become a real headache for the United States. According to Cabello, Washington has started to disregard Venezuela’s opposition for being incompetent and for stealing the money they sent to fund political destabilization activity against the Nicolas Maduro Administration.

Rally Saturday at the Venezuelan Embassy in DC

With permission from the elected government of Venezuela, on April 10 a number of peace activists moved into the Venezuelan Embassy to prevent its takeover by supporters of the attempted coup led by U.S. puppet Juan Guaido. The Embassy Protection Collective (EPC) has since faced daily harassment from angry Guaido supporters as well as the United States Secret Service. In an attempt to shine on a spotlight on this situation, a public rally will be held in front of the Embassy Saturday at noon.

US-Led Coup In Venezuela: The Plot Thickens

A lot has happened and we have learned more since last week when we wrote, Venezuela: What Activists Need To Know About The US-Led Coup. This article updates activists so we remain well-informed and can educate others in the face of a bi-partisan and corporate media narrative supporting the coup. This weekend, there were competing protests in Venezuela. At a protest celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Bolivarian Process, the day Hugo Chavez was sworn into office, tens of thousands watched as President Maduro called for National Assembly elections.

Is South America’s ‘Progressive Cycle’ At An End?

By Claudio Katz for Venezuelanalysis. The progressive cycle arose in popular rebellions that brought down neoliberal governments (Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina) or eroded their continuity (Brazil, Uruguay). These uprisings modified the power relations but did not alter South America's economic insertion in the international division of labour. On the contrary, in a decade of rising prices for raw materials all countries reinforced their status as exporters of primary products. The right-wing governments (Sebastián Piñera in Chile, Álvaro Uribe-Juan Manuel Santos in Colombia, Vicente Fox-Enrique Peña Nieto in Mexico) used the foreign exchange bonanza to consolidate the model based on openness to free trade and privatizations. The centre-left administrations (Néstor and Cristina Kirchner in Argentina, Inácio Lula da Silva-Dilma Rousseff in Brazil, Tabaré Vázquez-José “Pepe” Mujica in Uruguay, Rafael Correa in Ecuador) promoted increased internal consumption, subsidies to local business owners and social welfare programs.

Overcome The US Falsehoods About Venezuela

There is a lot of hot air spewed in the US corporate press crying wolf on the supposedly worsening economic hardships of Venezuela's citizens. The reported cause of their supposed economic woes? Maduro's "authoritarian regime's" socializing of the economy. Venezuela's (more accurately descibed) profoundly democratic government, disagrees. And why shouldn't they? On top of the global capitalist economic system having serious turmoil, Venezuela is under economic attack. The rich of Venezuela (colluding certainly with rich allies in the US and the service of US spy agencies) are intentionally destabilizing their economy in a dirty class war since having been removed from governmental power by democratic elections. However, whereas in the US we've seen soaring income inequality as a result of the rich controling our government, in Venezuela an economic offensive against the rich's control has served the interests of the 99% and especially the poorest.
