Defending Julian Assange; Defending The Truth

On 11 April 2019, WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange was dragged from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London by UK police and arrested for breaching a bail condition. See ‘Arrest update – SW1’. Upon arrival at a London police station, Julian was ‘further arrested’ on behalf of the United States government to satisfy an extradition warrant under Section 73 of the UK Extradition Act. See ‘UPDATE: Arrest of Julian Assange’. Following a brief court hearing in which the extraordinary prejudice of the district judge was on clear display – see ‘Chelsea and Julian Are in Jail. History Trembles’ – Julian is now imprisoned in south London’s maximum security Belmarsh Prison.

Why MSM Will Never Tell The Truth About Assange

The media bashing Assange over “skateboarding” video would never have lasted six months in the draconian conditions he endured. In fact, those “journalists” wouldn’t have even dreamed of standing up to the number of governments Assange did to expose their corruption. They use terms like “overgrown teenager” to describe a man who has more courage and strength than any pencil pushing journalist out there. Compared to Assange they fall short in their reporting 10 times out of 10.

Assange: 7 Years Of Deception Leads To Media Prosecution For Publishing

In my last blog post, I warned that the media and political class would continue with their long-running deceptions about Julian Assange now that he has been dragged from the Ecuadorean embassy. They have wasted no time in proving me right. The first thrust in their campaign of deceit was set out on the Guardian’s front page today. There should have been wall-to-wall outrage from public figures in the UK at the United States creating a new crime of “doing journalism” and a new means of arrest for those committing this “crime” overseas, what I have termed “media rendition”.

Sell Out: How Corruption, Voter Fraud And A Neoliberal Turn Led Ecuador’s Lenin To Give Up Assange

The images of six Metropolitan police officers dragging Julian Assange out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London have provoked rage by citizens around the world. Many have warned that his extradition to the US for trial on conspiracy charges – and possibly much more if federal prosecutors have their way – will lead to the criminalization of many standard journalistic practices. These scenes were only possible thanks to the transformation of Ecuador’s government under the watch of President Lenin Moreno.

The Prosecution Of Julian Assange Is A Threat To Journalists Everywhere

The arrest of Julian Assange not only puts the free press in the United States at risk, it puts any reporters who expose US crimes anywhere in the world at risk. As Pepe Escobar wrote "Let’s cut to the chase. Julian Assange is not a US citizen, he’s an Australian. WikiLeaks is not a US-based media organization. If the US government gets Assange extradited, prosecuted and incarcerated, it will legitimize its right to go after anyone, anyhow, anywhere, anytime." The Assange prosecution requires us to build a global movement to not only free Julian Assange, but to protect the world from the crimes and corruption of the United States and other governments. The reality is that Freedom of Press for the 21st Century is on trial.

UK Judge Calls Assange “A Narcissist,” Sets Extradition Court Date

As news broke of plain-clothed officers arresting WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Thursday morning UK time, the world's media converged to Westminster Magistrates Court rapidly. While Mr Assange’s lawyer delayed the hearing with a late arrival, the WikiLeaks founder nonchalantly brought out a book to read sitting in a glassed dock facing the press gallery that included The National. Journalists from around the world, as far as Russia, had packed the press gallery and squeezed into the public gallery. Camera crews had swamped Westminster Crown Court’s front entrance, as approximately ten Assange supporters unfurled banners demanding his release.

Daniel Ellsberg: Assange’s Arrest Is The Beginning Of The End

Whistleblower associated with WikiLeaks Julian Assange appeared to be making a statement as he was shuffled out in handcuffs from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. He was carrying a book, a book published by The Real News Network with Gore Vidal on the history of the national security state. We gather Assange may have been trying to send the world a message, as did the Washington Post. And you can find an interview that Paul Jay, the senior editor here at The Real News Network, had done with The Washington Post in the link below.

If We Lose WikiLeaks, We Lose A Whole Stratum Of Freedom — Pilger

The US attempt to prosecute WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is a spiteful assault on civil freedoms conducted by an ailing superpower that is struggling to preserve its dominance, UK-based journalist John Pilger told RT. One should not mistake what is happening to Assange for anything but the persecution of a man, who embarrassed the US by exposing to the public Washington’s brutality in the Middle East, award-winning British journalist John Pilger told RT’s Going Underground program.

Protesters Call On UK To #FreeAssange Outside British Embassy In DC

“It’s totally backwards and we’re calling for him to be freed. And I would like the people who got us into the wars to be the ones behind bars.” – Codepink co-founder Medea Benjamin Demonstrators gathered on Thursday – just hours after the arrest of Wikileaks publisher Julian Assange by UK authorities – outside of the British Embassy in Washington D.C. to denounce the unprecedented affront to freedom of the press. Protesters also took the opportunity to highlight the injustice of the jailing of Chelsea Manning over her refusal to testify against Assange.

10 Reasons Assange Should Walk Free

Governments’ (monstrous and criminal) behavior should not be secret. People should know what their government is doing, and what a powerful foreign government is doing to their own countries. The actual results of the work of WikiLeaks have been hugely beneficial. If U.S. courts were to get busy prosecuting the crimes exposed by WikiLeaks, rather than trying to turn the act of revealing them into some sort of crime, they would simply not have time for the latter.

Defending Rights And Dissent On Julian Assange Indictment

Earlier this morning, London police entered the Ecuadorian embassy and arrested Julian Assange. This was in response to a US extradition request. Assange is expected to be extradited and stand trial in the Eastern District of Virginia. Press freedom, civil liberties, and human rights groups have long opposed the extradition of Assange to the US. They have warned prosecuting Assange for publishing information would be a terrible precedent. This would be especially true if charges were brought under the Espionage Act. While the Espionage Act has been increasingly used against those who leak classified information to the media it has never been used against the publisher of information.

In Court, Assange Flashes Thumbs Up, Faces Extradition To US

Julian Assange has appeared in the dock at Westminster Magistrates’ Court after being arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy this morning. Assange has been further arrested over an alleged conspiracy with Chelsea Manning “to break a password to a classified US government computer”, the US Department of Justice said. With grey hair tied into a ponytail and long beard, Assange saluted the public gallery before giving a thumbs up.

Julian Assange Arrested, Take Action Now

April 11, 2019 - Today, Wikileaks publisher, Julian Assange, was expelled from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he was granted asylum almost seven years ago, and arrested by British police. He is being held for extradition to the United States. Assange is a journalist who should not be prosecuted for publishing the truth. We urge people in the UK, US, Australia and around the world to protest the extradition and prosecution of Julian Assange at every step of legal proceedings. The prosecution of Julian Assange is an attack on Freedom of the Press in the 21st Century.

Julian Assange: At the Forefront of 21st Century Journalism

If there were ever a doubt about whether the editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, is a journalist, recent events erase all those doubts and put him at the forefront of a movement to democratize journalism and empower people. The list of WikiLeaks revelations has become astounding. During the North African and Middle East revolts WikiLeaks published documents that provided people with critical information. The traditional media has relied on WikiLeaks publications and is now also emulating WikiLeaks.

On The Pavement With Wikileaks

When Julian Assange does leave the embassy, it will be important to try to focus a hostile media on why it is Assange is actually wanted for extradition Entirely unexpectedly, I have been down in London this last three days outside and around the Ecuadorean Embassy, following WikiLeaks’ announcement that their sources indicate Julian might be expelled within hours or days. Plainly Julian’s position within the Embassy has deteriorated fundamentally, to the extent he is now treated openly as a closely guarded prisoner. I still have not myself been granted permission to visit him and he is now very isolated.
