Trump To Target Native-Born US Citizens

President-elect Trump is claiming that he can abolish birthright citizenship, seeking to strip citizenship from 7 million or more Americans who are children of undocumented immigrants. This has been a long-time demand of right-wing anti-immigrant individuals and organizations, such as Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, former Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce (best known as the sponsor of Arizona’s anti-immigrant SB1070 law) and anti-immigrant organizations such as the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).

Women Protesting India’s Anti-Muslim Citizenship Law Are Undeterred By Violence

Starting in the early morning of Feb. 24, sectarian violence between Hindus and Muslims broke out in several neighborhoods in northeast New Delhi — all while Donald Trump was on a visit to India. Videos emerged on social media of Hindus chanting “Jai Shri Ram,” or “Hail Lord Ram,” pelting Muslims with stones...

Citizenship Law Protests Shut Down India’s Capital

India’s national capital, New Delhi, faced a lockdown unprecedented in history on Thursday as protests over the religion-based Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) broke out across the country. The Act allows refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to become Indian citizens but bars Muslims. This, many have complained, violates the constitution of India – a country whose population includes 200 million Indian Muslims. Anger against the amended law had spread across India after students were beaten up in Delhi on Sunday and more protests were planned.

People Increasingly See Themselves As Global Citizens

By Naomi Grimley for BBC News - People are increasingly identifying themselves as global rather than national citizens, according to a BBC World Service poll. The trend is particularly marked in emerging economies, where people see themselves as outward looking and internationally minded. However, in Germany fewer people say they feel like global citizens now, compared with 2001.

French Constitutional Amendment On State Of Emergency

By Alex Lantier for WSWS. French President François Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Valls presented to the council of ministers yesterday an amendment inscribing the state of emergency in the French constitution. Even the fragmentary initial reports that emerged from the meeting show that it opened the way to the lasting imposition of police-state rule in France. The amendment that Hollande proposed would allow the president to call a state of emergency the duration of which would be set by legislation. The amendment places no restrictions on how long a state of emergency parliamentarians could decide to allow. It also permits a stepped-up use by police of their already enormous powers of repression and electronic surveillance of the population. Moreover, by proposing to extend the deprivation of nationality to dual nationals condemned for “terrorist crimes,” including dual nationals born French, the ruling Socialist Party (PS) is openly affirming its sympathies for the ideas of the neo-fascist National Front (FN).
