The Consequences Of TPP

Despite the attitude of the Democratic Party, which has a strong contingent in opposition, President Obama (and former President Clinton and future possible President Hillary Clinton) are for the TPP. (She supported the TPP while calling for protections for labor, the environment, and other regulations. http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/215817-clinton-vs-warren-where-they-disagree. But if the final product is deficient in those areas, she will still support TPP’s adoption). President Obama is in a perfect position to get TPP passed. While there was a Democratic majority in the Senate, passage was in doubt. But now he can work with the Republican majority to get it enacted. And that is precisely where he is headed.

Holiday Bright Spots For Progressives

The midterm elections were a wake-up call. Voters had given up on the Democratic partyas irrelevant – not really on their side, so they didn’t bother to show up at the polls. But there are end-of-year holiday season bright spots for progressives as we think about the coming year’s fights. People are becoming more active with protests over issues like low pay and police treatment. Locally people are putting core progressive policies like fighting pollution, raising the minimum wage and giving people sick days off into effect. And there are signs that the national Democrats are starting to “get it” that they have to demonstrate they are on the side of regular, working people.

Top Priority: Build The Movement Not Electoral Politics

The Democrats’ conduct since the midterm debacle is as sad and sorry as the campaign that caused it. The party’s leaders are a big problem. A bigger one is the closed system of high-dollar fundraising, reductionist polling and vapid messaging in which it is seemingly trapped. Some say a more populist Democratic Party will soon emerge. It won’t happen as long as these leaders and this system are in place. It took more than the usual civic sloth to produce the lowest turnout in 72 years. It took alienating vast voting blocs, including the young and the working class of both genders and all races. The young now trend Republican. Voters of all ages migrate to third parties or abandon politics altogether. It’s the biggest Democratic defection since the South switched parties in the 1960s. If Democrats don’t change their ways, their 2016 turnout will be a lot harder to gin up than they think.

Message To Democratic Party: It’s Time To Face Reality

The 2014 election was a disaster for Democrats. Any Democratic partisan who tries to explain it away is doing a disservice to their party. When the Maryland’s Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown loses to an unknown Republican in a state where the Democrats have a 2-to-1 registration advantage, the Democratic Party better look in the mirror and ask: Why didn’t people vote for us? And why didn’t the base of people who have voted for us come out to vote? Democratic Party chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced that the party will initiate a process to understand why they lost so badly in the recent election. An honest reflection on these questions and an informed shift in strategy would result in a transformation toward a truly populist platform with non-corporatist candidates. That shift would make the Democratic Party the dominant party for decades to come. Failure to face these issues will ensure the Democrats will never play the role of leadership that the country needs at this critical time.

When House Republicans took up a measure to speed the government's reviews of applications to export natural gas, a move long sought by energy companies, the unexpected happened: The bill won "yes" votes from 47 Democrats. The bill's sponsor, Rep. Cory Gardner (R., Colo.), anticipated some Democratic backing, but not that much. Rep. Steve Israel of New York, who leads the Democrats' House campaign arm, was a yes, as was House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland. Both voted in 2012 to restrict oil and gas exports. The energy boom is shaping a new kind of Democrat in national politics, lawmakers who are giving greater support to the oil and gas industry even at the risk of alienating environmental groups, a core of the party's base.

Ending the corporate state begins with you, and you and you. And with me, and my friends and my comrades. We can have “the two-party system” or we can have democracy in this country, but we cannot have both. If the corporate parties succeed in shutting down fair debates and shutting out socialist candidates, then we, the people, still have the choice to march on our polling places on Election Day in open protest against a capitalist Congress. We can have clean air and water, or we can be sleepwalkers on a poisoned planet. We can have a class-conscious struggle for peace, or we can have a new nuclear arms race.
