Venezuela’s Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino condemned the recent message of the former far-right presidential candidate Edmundo González, who seeks to generate a climate of violence in the country amid President Nicolás Maduro’s inauguration scheduled for this Friday, January 10. Padrino noted that the Bolivarian National Armed Force (FANB) is a professional institution that is committed to the defense of the country’s sovereignty and people’s will. In a statement released this Monday, January 6, the top military commander said that “we have observed with profound indignation a video published last night, January 5, by the coward Edmundo González addressing the FANB in ​​a shameless and insolent manner with absurd and incoherent statements that demonstrate not only ignorance regarding the military institution but also an exacerbated desperation in the face of the imminent and resounding failure of his coup plans.”

Ten days before Donald Trump will be inaugurated in Washington DC on January 20, there will be another inauguration in Caracas. Two contenders claim they will receive the Venezuelan presidential sash. Nicolás Maduro’s claim to the presidency is backed by the finding of the Venezuelan electoral authority (CNE) that he won 51.95% of the vote in the July 28th contest. This was subsequently confirmed by their supreme court (TSJ), after a thorough examination of the voting records. Edmundo González Urrutia’s claim is based on informally collected voting tallies from 70 to 80% of the precincts showing that he won anywhere from 55 to 75% of the total vote (depending on the source). In contrast, the official CNE electoral authority found he lost with 43.18% of the vote.

The Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office has issued an arrest warrant for former opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González. On Monday, state prosecutor Luis Ernesto Dueñez requested that the Court of First Instance with competence over terrorism-related matters approve the order to arrest the US-backed politician for the charges of usurpation of functions, public document forgery, instigation of law-breaking, conspiracy, sabotage and association to commit crimes. Later in the day, Judge Edward Briceño approved the warrant and tasked the CICPC investigative police unit with executing it.

The Venezuelan courts took action in response to the blatant disregard of the law displayed by former far-right presidential candidate Edmundo González. This Monday, September 2, Venezuela’s Anti-Terrorist Court of First Instance issued an arrest warrant for González and commissioned the Scientific, Penal, and Criminal Investigation Service Corps (CICPC) to execute the ruling. After the July 28 presidential elections, González decided to not-recognize the electoral results. González’s Unitary Platform created websites announcing alleged electoral results that contradicted the official results released by Venezuelan authorities.

The Public Ministry of Venezuela issued a summons addressed to former presidential candidate Edmundo González to appear on Monday morning, for his alleged responsibility in the crimes of usurpation of electoral functions, forgery of public documents, instigation to disobedience of laws, cyber crimes, criminal association, and conspiracy. The summons were issued on Friday, August 23, by the Office of the Attorney General of Venezuela. “As Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced on Friday at a press conference, former candidate Edmundo González Urrutia has been summoned to give his statements regarding his alleged responsibility in the crimes of usurpation of functions, forgery of public documents, instigation to disobedience of laws, cyber crimes, criminal association, and conspiracy,” the Public Ministry reported in a statement.
