Health Care Workers Spoke Out For Their Peers In Gaza; Then Backlash

Chandra Hassan, an associate professor of surgery at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine, spent three weeks in Gaza in January 2024, treating patients who had survived tank shelling, drone strikes, and sniper fire amid Israel’s ongoing genocide. When Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis came under siege, Hassan and the MedGlobal doctors he was serving with were forced to flee. “We were evacuated when they bombed just across the street from the hospital [and] tanks were rolling in,” Hassan told Truthout. When Hassan returned home to Chicago, he was eager to share his experiences and advocate for an end to Israel’s assault on Gaza, which has killed an estimated 68,000 Palestinians since October 2023.

Many people in the United States and around the world were watching the news very intently on September 10, but they could be forgiven for not knowing that a Texas professor was illegally fired for his political views, as it wasn’t much reported on, even in Texas. History professor Thomas Alter was terminated after being accused by Texas State University president Kelly Damphousse of “conduct that advocates for inciting violence.” This politically motivated firing, while outrageous, is sadly becoming less and less unprecedented — it’s part of a new McCarthyism in American higher education. The university said the illegal firing was the result of comments made by Alter at the virtual Revolutionary Socialism Conference. The conference was organized by Firebrand, Socialist Horizon, and the International Socialist League in early September, and was geared towards the formation of a revolutionary party.

Can a worker be fired simply for expressing an opinion that the boss or a political group finds objectionable? These days online attackers often campaign to pressure employers to fire workers for political speech—even speech that took place on their private social media pages. Stewards have a number of tools at their disposal to defend members from these attacks. Bosses and disgruntled co-workers have long attempted to target workers over off-duty conduct. Grievance books are filled with examples of disputes away from the workplace—for example, a boss and a worker both have too much to drink and get into a dispute at a local watering hole, and the boss demands that the worker be fired “in the interest of workplace safety.”

Amazon Fires 150 Unionized Third-Party Drivers

Amazon has fired more than 150 unionized drivers working for a third-party contractor in Queens, New York, according to the Teamsters union. Workers rallied at the company’s DBK4 facility in Queens on Monday after the company fired the drivers, who worked for Cornucopia, a delivery service provider (DSP) that Amazon contracted with to make deliveries. Amazon works with more than 3,000 DSPs around the world who deliver the company’s packages. The Teamsters said the firings were in retaliation for unionizing. “Amazon is breaking the law and we let the public know it,” said Antonio Rosario, a member of local 804 and a Teamster organizer, in a statement. “Amazon workers will continue to organize and fight for what they deserve.”

Microsoft Sacks More Employees For Protesting Gaza Genocide

Microsoft announced on 29 August that an additional four employees were fired for participating in on-site protests against the company’s deep ties to Israel, including its role in providing surveillance tools used in the occupied West Bank and Gaza. The protest group “No Azure for Apartheid” said on Wednesday that Anna Hattle and Riki Fameli received voicemails notifying them of their dismissal after staging sit-in protests inside the office of President Brad Smith this week A day later, it reported that two more workers, Nisreen Jaradat and Julius Shan, had also been fired. The group stated that all four had been involved in protests, including recent encampments outside Microsoft's headquarters.
